Cassie Cartmell – Faodail Creation

Frankenstein Monster Applique is a fun Halloween sewing project that is perfect for adding a spooky touch to your home. In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to create your own Frankenstein monster using fabric appliqué, fusible adhesive, and free-motion quilting.

I had so much fun making this Frankenstein monster, and this project is much easier than it may look. You can turn your finished appliqué into a wall hanging, cushion, apron, sweatshirt, tote bag, or another sewing project of your choice.

The technique is the same regardless of what you decide to make.

The Frankenstein Monster Applique pattern is available as a free pattern in my Facebook group, Faodail Creation Sewing, Quilting & Embroidery Group. The group is free to join, and you’ll also find other free appliqué patterns and sewing inspiration there.

As a Baby Lock Educator, I love creating projects that allow you to explore the creative possibilities of your sewing machine. This Frankenstein Monster Applique project combines traditional fabric appliqué with free-motion quilting to create a fun Halloween design.

I used Steam-a-Seam 2 because I like the way it works for appliqué projects. The two-sided fusible adhesive allows you to position your pieces before permanently pressing them into place.

Step 1: Prepare the Frankenstein Monster Applique Pattern

Prepare the Frankenstein Monster Applique Pattern

The first step is to prepare your Frankenstein Monster Applique pattern.

Print or obtain the free pattern and look carefully at all of the individual pieces.

There are quite a few pieces in this Frankenstein design, so I recommend keeping track of them as you work.

I like to tick each piece off the pattern as I trace it.

This simple step can save you from wondering whether you have already traced a particular piece.

Trace Each Applique Piece

Place your Steam-a-Seam onto the pattern and begin tracing the individual shapes.

You do not need to trace every curve perfectly. Just make sure you follow the basic outline of each piece.

For Frankenstein’s face, pay particular attention to the area underneath the hair.

The face should extend slightly underneath the hair because the hair will overlap the top of the face when the pieces are assembled.

Once you have traced the face, tick it off your list.

Continue with the hair, bolts, teeth, nose, eyes, and other pieces.

Keep Small Pieces Together

Some of the pieces are very small.

When several small pieces belong together, I recommend leaving them together on the Steam-a-Seam until you are ready to use them.

This makes them easier to keep track of and reduces the chance of losing one of the tiny pieces.

For the eyes, label the pieces if necessary.

For example, you can mark them with:

  • E – White
  • E – Green
  • E – Black

You can also label the nose with an “N.”

This is especially helpful when you have several small appliqué pieces on your work surface.

Step 2: Cut Around the Applique Pieces

Cut Around the Applique Pieces

When you have finished tracing your Frankenstein Monster Applique pieces, cut around each shape.

Do not cut directly on the drawn line yet.

Instead, leave approximately ¼ inch around each shape.

If you are working from a large roll or sheet of Steam-a-Seam, trim away the excess material first.

This makes each individual piece much easier to handle.

Continue ticking off your pattern pieces as you cut them.

By the end of this stage, you should have every Frankenstein Monster Applique piece traced and prepared.

Step 3: Apply the Fusible Adhesive to the Fabric

Apply the Fusible Adhesive to the Fabric

Now it is time to transfer the Frankenstein Monster Applique pieces onto your fabrics.

Place the fusible adhesive against the wrong side of the fabric.

This is important because the adhesive needs to bond to the reverse side of your fabric.

Check Which Side Has the Glue

Steam-a-Seam is two-sided, and sometimes it can be difficult to tell which side contains the adhesive.

Before pressing, check that you have the correct side against the fabric.

If you have accidentally used the plain side, there is an easy way to correct it.

Press your thumb gently against the surface.

If the adhesive sticks to your thumb, you know you have found the glue side.

You can then gently move the adhesive over so the glue is facing the correct direction.

Always check before pressing.

This small step can save you from having to redo your fabric pieces later.

Step 4: Prepare All the Frankenstein Monster Applique Fabrics

Prepare All the Frankenstein Monster Applique Fabrics

Work through your traced pieces one at a time.

Start with the face.

Place it against your chosen fabric and check that you have enough fabric to cover the entire shape.

I like to audition the pieces before permanently pressing them.

This means placing the fabric pieces together to check the colours, size, and overall appearance before committing to the final placement.

Repeat the process with the hair.

Then prepare the bolts, teeth, eyes, and other pieces.

For the eyes, prepare the white, green, and black sections separately.

For the teeth, use white fabric.

The bolts can be made from a contrasting fabric of your choice.

Step 5: Decide on the Nose

For my Frankenstein Monster Applique, I initially prepared a separate fabric piece for the nose.

However, I decided to leave the fabric nose out.

Instead, I planned to create the nose using free-motion quilting later.

This is one of the fun things about fabric appliqué.

You do not have to follow the design in exactly the same way every time.

You can change details and use stitching to add additional features.

Step 6: Prepare Your Background Fabric

Prepare Your Background Fabric

For my project, I used a 16-inch x 16-inch piece of fabric for the wall hanging.

You can change the size depending on how you want to use your Frankenstein Monster Applique.

For example, you could make the design into:

  • A wall hanging
  • A cushion
  • An apron
  • A sweatshirt
  • A tote bag
  • A Halloween decoration

The principle of applying the fabric pieces remains the same.

Find the Centre of Your Fabric

If you need to find the centre of your background fabric, fold the fabric in half.

Fold it in half again.

Pinch the corner firmly and then open the fabric back out.

You should have a small cross-shaped crease marking the centre.

You can then use a friction pen to mark the centre more clearly.

This gives you a useful reference point when positioning your Frankenstein Monster Applique.

Step 7: Cut Out the Frankenstein Monster Applique Pieces

Cut Out the Frankenstein Monster Applique Pieces

Once your fused fabrics have cooled, you can begin cutting out the individual pieces.

This time, carefully cut directly along the drawn lines.

Take your time around curves and small details.

The more accurately you cut the pieces, the cleaner your finished Frankenstein Monster Applique will look.

There is no need to rush this stage.

Step 8: Position the Frankenstein Monster Applique

Position the Frankenstein Monster Applique

Now comes one of my favourite parts: assembling the monster.

Peel away the paper backing from each appliqué piece.

Removing the paper reveals the adhesive underneath.

Position the face first.

Then add the hair.

Continue adding the bolts, eyes, teeth, and other pieces.

The great thing about Steam-a-Seam is that you can reposition the pieces before permanently pressing them.

So if something isn’t quite where you want it, simply lift it and try again.

And remember, this is Frankenstein’s monster!

It doesn’t have to be perfect.

Add the Mouth

Use your friction pen to sketch the mouth onto the fabric.

Don’t worry if the markings are visible.

Friction pen markings can be removed with heat later.

You can use your sketch as a guide when you begin your free-motion quilting.

At this stage, you can also sketch the nose if you have decided to create it with stitching rather than a separate fabric appliqué piece.

Step 9: Add Quilter’s Batting

Before going to the sewing machine, add a layer of quilter’s batting behind your project.

The batting provides stabilization and gives you a suitable surface for the free-motion quilting.

For my 12-inch x 12-inch canvas frame, I used an approximately 11-inch x 11-inch piece of batting for mounting.

For the actual appliqué project, use batting appropriate for the size and purpose of your finished item.

Pin the batting securely behind your work.

Step 10: Fuse the Frankenstein Monster Applique

Fuse the Frankenstein Monster Applique

Once you are completely happy with the placement of every piece, it is time to permanently fuse the Frankenstein Monster Applique.

Carefully press the entire design with your iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions for your fusible adhesive.

Make sure every appliqué piece is exactly where you want it before pressing.

Once the adhesive has been fused, the pieces will be secured to your background fabric.

Some of your friction pen markings may disappear during this process.

That’s okay.

Simply redraw any lines you need using your friction pen.

Step 11: Free-Motion Quilt the Frankenstein Monster Applique

Free-Motion Quilt the Frankenstein Monster Applique

Now it is time to take your Frankenstein Monster Applique to the sewing machine.

For my project, I used a Baby Lock sewing machine with an open-toe foot, a 90/14 needle, and black embroidery thread in the bobbin.

I lowered the feed dogs so I could do free-motion quilting.

Follow the Applique Shapes

If you are new to free-motion quilting, this is a great project to practise with.

You already have the Frankenstein design in front of you.

Instead of having to invent a quilting design, simply follow the lines and shapes that you have created.

I like to think of this technique as thread painting or thread sketching.

You are essentially drawing with your sewing machine.

Start with one of the eyes.

Move around the inside of the eye several times to secure and define the shape.

You don’t need to make every stitch identical.

The character of free-motion quilting comes from the movement of your hands and sewing machine.

Use Your Hands Correctly

When free-motion quilting, position your hands so you can comfortably move the fabric in different directions.

Keep the fabric supported and use smooth movements.

The goal is to allow the fabric to move freely while maintaining control over your stitching.

Practise on a scrap piece of fabric and batting first if you are new to free-motion quilting.

Step 12: Stitch the Frankenstein Monster Details

Stitch the Frankenstein Monster Details

Continue using free-motion quilting to add the facial details.

Follow the lines you created with your friction pen.

Stitch the nose.

Then stitch the mouth.

Continue around the other appliqué pieces, using the black thread to outline and define the design.

You can go over certain areas more than once if you want stronger definition.

This stitching is what really brings the Frankenstein Monster Applique to life.

It adds texture, personality, and detail without requiring complicated embroidery designs.

Step 13: Mount the Frankenstein Monster Applique

Once the stitching is complete, you can turn your appliqué into a finished Halloween wall hanging.

For my project, I used a 12-inch x 12-inch canvas frame.

These inexpensive canvas frames are particularly useful for fabric wall art.

I have reused the same type of frame several times by removing the previous fabric and mounting another project.

Attach the Batting to the Frame

Use glue to attach the batting to the canvas frame.

The batting should be slightly smaller than the frame.

For a 12-inch x 12-inch frame, my batting was approximately 11 inches x 11 inches.

This gives you room to concentrate on mounting the fabric neatly.

If you are unfamiliar with mounting fabric onto a canvas frame, I also have a full tutorial explaining the process in more detail.

Why I Love Frankenstein Monster Applique

One of my favourite things about this Frankenstein Monster Applique is how adaptable the technique is.

You don’t need to make a wall hanging.

The same appliqué could become part of a Halloween cushion, clothing, an apron, a tote bag, or another seasonal sewing project.

You can also change the fabrics to create a completely different look.

Try patterned fabric for the hair, different shades of green for the face, or colourful fabrics for a more playful Frankenstein.

The free-motion stitching can also be changed.

You could add additional stitching around the face, create decorative details, or use different thread colours.

Frankenstein Monster Applique Tips for Beginners

Frankenstein Monster Applique

If you are new to appliqué, don’t be intimidated by the number of pieces.

The most important thing is to work methodically.

Trace one piece at a time and tick each one off.

Keep small pieces together.

Label pieces when necessary.

Always check which side of your fusible adhesive contains the glue.

Most importantly, audition your appliqué pieces before permanently pressing them.

This gives you the opportunity to make adjustments before the adhesive is fused.

When free-motion quilting, practise first if you need to.

Your stitching does not need to be perfect.

In fact, a little variation can make your Frankenstein Monster Applique look more handmade and unique.

Create Your Own Halloween Sewing Project

As a Baby Lock Educator, Cassie Cartmell enjoys sharing approachable sewing, quilting, and applique techniques that you can try on your own sewing machine.

This project is also flexible. You don’t have to make a wall hanging like I did. Once you have created your owl applique, you can use it on a cushion cover, apron, tote bag, quilt, table runner, or another fabric project. Whether you’re new to applique or already enjoy creating fabric designs, Baby Lock Educator Cassie Cartmell will guide you through each step so you can create your own fall-inspired owl.

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – What You Will Make

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – What You Will Make

This Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners is designed with several fabric pieces that are layered together to create the owl.

For my project, I am turning the finished applique into a 12 x 12-inch wall hanging.

The finished project includes:

  • An owl applique
  • Multiple layers of fabric
  • Fusible web
  • Free-motion quilting
  • A fabric background
  • Quilter’s batting
  • A canvas frame

One of the things I like about this project is that you don’t need perfectly precise quilting stitches.

In fact, I think the slightly messy, sketchy look adds character to the finished owl!

For my wall hanging, I used:

I am using a Baby Lock sewing and embroidery machine for this project, but you don’t need the exact same machine.

The important thing is that your sewing machine allows you to lower the feed dogs for free-motion quilting.

Why I Prefer Steam-A-Seam – Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

For this owl applique, I use Steam-A-Seam rather than HeatnBond.

Steam-A-Seam is a two-sided fusible product, which makes it particularly useful when creating applique pieces.

It also comes in sheets, which means you can run the sheets through a printer if you want to print your applique pattern directly onto them.

It is also available on rolls.

For this particular project, I am drawing the owl pieces onto the Steam-A-Seam rather than printing them.

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Step-by-Step Tutorial

Now let’s get started!

The following ten steps take you from the free pattern all the way through to the finished quilted owl wall hanging.

Step 1: Download the Free Owl Applique Pattern

Faodail Creation Facebook Group

The first step in this Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners is to get your free pattern. https://www.facebook.com/groups/405258636506758

The owl applique pattern is available in the Files section of my Faodail Creation Sewing, Quilting & Embroidery Group on Facebook.

The group is free to join.

Once you have downloaded the pattern, print it or use it as your template for tracing the individual applique pieces.

Before starting, look carefully at the pattern.

This is important because some pieces will sit behind other pieces.

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Understanding the Layers

Applique is essentially a layering process.

You need to know which fabric pieces will be placed first and which pieces will go on top.

For example, the owl’s eyes and beak overlap other parts of the design.

Taking a few minutes to study the pattern before cutting your fabric can save you from having to rearrange pieces later.

Step 2: Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Trace the Owl Applique Pieces

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners - Trace the Owl Applique Pieces

Take your Steam-A-Seam and begin tracing the individual pieces of the owl.

Steam-A-Seam has a gridded side and a plain side.

For this project, I use the plain side for drawing.

You don’t have to trace every line perfectly.

The important thing is to follow the basic shape of each piece.

Once you’ve traced a piece, cut around it—but don’t cut directly on your drawn line yet.

Instead, leave approximately ¼ inch around the outside.

This makes handling the pieces much easier.

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Keep Track of Your Pieces

If your applique pattern has several pieces, it can be surprisingly easy to forget which pieces you’ve already traced.

One simple trick is to put a small check mark beside each completed piece on your pattern.

This is especially helpful when you’re working with a design containing lots of small parts.

Step 3: Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Think About Which Pieces Go in Front

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners - Think About Which Pieces Go in Front

Before cutting everything out, look at how the owl is assembled.

Think about what is underneath and what needs to sit on top.

For example, the beak needs to be positioned correctly in relation to the eyes.

The feet are also designed as one larger piece rather than individual toes.

That’s intentional.

Once the applique has been attached, you can use free-motion quilting to define the legs and feet.

This is one of the fun parts of the Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners because you don’t need every detail to be cut separately.

The quilting can add those details later.

Step 4: Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Fuse the Steam-A-Seam to Your Fabric

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners - Fuse the Steam-A-Seam to Your Fabric

Once all of your applique pieces have been traced, place them onto the appropriate fabrics.

Pay close attention to which side contains the adhesive.

This is important because the adhesive can sometimes be on the opposite side from where you expect it to be.

If you are using the blank side to draw your pattern, check where the glue is before removing the backing.

You don’t want to accidentally remove the wrong layer.

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – A Helpful Steam-A-Seam Tip

If the adhesive is on the wrong side, carefully press the piece onto your thumb and transfer it to the other side.

Then check that the adhesive is positioned correctly before attaching it to the fabric.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular fusible product when applying heat.

Once the pieces have been fused, allow them to cool.

This gives the adhesive time to properly adhere to the fabric.

Step 5: Cut Out the Owl Applique Pieces

Cut Out the Owl Applique Pieces

Once the Steam-A-Seam has been attached to the fabrics and cooled, it’s time to cut out the individual owl applique pieces.

This is where you can finally cut directly along your traced lines.

Take your scissors and carefully cut around each piece.

Try to keep your cuts smooth, but don’t worry if they aren’t absolutely perfect.

Remember that this is a fabric applique project.

Small imperfections can disappear once everything is assembled and stitched.

When you’ve finished cutting, you should have all the individual fabric pieces ready to assemble.

Step 6: Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Prepare the Background Fabric

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners - Prepare the Background Fabric

Now it’s time to prepare the background.

For my wall hanging, I’m using a piece of fabric larger than the finished 12 x 12-inch canvas.

My background fabric is 16 x 16 inches.

If you want to find the exact center of your fabric, fold it in half and lightly press the center.

Then fold it in half in the opposite direction and press again.

When you open the fabric, you’ll have a small cross marking the center.

You can use this as a guide for positioning your owl.

Why Centering Helps

Finding the center before attaching the applique makes it much easier to create a balanced wall hanging.

You can still adjust the owl’s position before pressing the pieces permanently into place.

Step 7: Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners Arrange and Fuse the Owl

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners Arrange and Fuse the Owl

Now begin assembling your owl applique.

Start with the main body.

Remove the backing from the fusible piece and position the owl body on the background fabric.

Next, begin adding the remaining applique pieces.

Add the eyes, beak, wings, feet and other details according to the pattern.

Remember to check your layers as you work.

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Check the Wings

Because the pattern has not been reversed, the wings will be positioned on the opposite side from the original drawing when you transfer them.

This isn’t a problem, but it is something to be aware of.

You can use a ruler to check that the wings are positioned evenly and run parallel to each other.

Take your time here.

Don’t press everything permanently until you’re happy with the arrangement.

Step 8: Add the Batting and Secure the Applique

Add the Batting and Secure the Applique

Before moving to the sewing machine, place your 11 x 11-inch quilter’s batting behind the background fabric.

The batting provides some stabilization and gives the finished wall hanging a little more body.

Double-check that everything is positioned correctly.

Although you may be able to remove and reposition some pieces, it’s much easier to fix an applique before you have completely fused and stitched everything.

Once you’re happy with the arrangement, press according to the manufacturer’s instructions for your fusible product.

The applique is now ready for stitching.

Step 9: Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Use Free-Motion Quilting to Add Detail

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners - Use Free-Motion Quilting to Add Detail

This is my favourite part of the project!

For my owl applique, I’m using:

  • A Microtex 90/14 needle
  • Black embroidery thread
  • Black bobbin thread
  • An open-toe foot

I’m also lowering the feed dogs on my sewing machine.

This allows me to move the fabric freely while doing free-motion quilting.

Try Thread Painting

For the wings, I use a technique I call thread painting.

Instead of trying to make one perfect line, I loosely sketch around the shape several times.

I usually go around the wing approximately three times.

The result is intentionally sketchy and artistic.

And here’s the great thing:

The messier it looks, the better I think it looks!

You don’t need to have perfect free-motion quilting skills to enjoy this technique.

Stitch the Owl’s Feet – Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

I use the same approach to define the feet and legs.

Remember that we didn’t need to cut every individual toe and leg as a separate applique piece.

The quilting can create those details.

This is a great example of how stitching can become part of the artwork.

Don’t Pull the Fabric – Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

When doing free-motion quilting, try to let your hands rest gently on the fabric.

Avoid tugging or pulling the material.

Move the fabric smoothly underneath the needle instead.

If you find that you naturally move more comfortably in one direction, simply turn the project.

There’s nothing wrong with pivoting your work so that you’re moving in the direction that feels most comfortable.

Step 10: Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Turn Your Owl Applique Into a Wall Hanging

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners - Turn Your Owl Applique Into a Wall Hanging

Once you’ve finished stitching the owl, you can turn your project into a wall hanging.

For my project, I’m using a 12 x 12-inch canvas frame.

The background fabric is intentionally larger than the canvas so that it can be wrapped around the edges.

I have another detailed tutorial showing how to attach fabric to a canvas, so you can follow that process if you’re making the same wall hanging.

One nice thing about using these canvas frames is that they can be reused.

I’ve used some of mine several times, and the glue can be removed quite easily when I’m ready to create another wall hanging.

That makes them a useful option for seasonal sewing projects.

How to Use This Owl Applique Sewing Pattern on Other Projects

You don’t have to make a wall hanging with this Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners.

The applique can be used on many different sewing projects.

Cushion Cover

Add the owl to the front of a cushion cover for a fun fall decoration.

Apron

A small owl applique would make a cute addition to a fall sewing apron.

Tote Bag

Add the design to a plain fabric tote to give it a seasonal look.

Quilt

The owl could also become part of a larger quilt design.

Table Runner

Use several owl appliques to create a coordinated fall table runner.

The great thing about applique is that the same design can be adapted to many different projects.

Tips for Successful Owl Applique

If you’re new to applique, don’t worry about making everything perfect.

Here are some tips that can help.

Take Your Time With Pattern Placement

Take Your Time With Pattern Placement

Before pressing your pieces, step back and look at the whole design.

It’s much easier to move something before it’s fused than afterward.

Keep Track of Your Pieces

If your pattern contains multiple pieces, mark each completed piece on your printed pattern.

This prevents confusion.

Check the Fusible Side

Always check which side contains the adhesive before attaching your Steam-A-Seam.

This simple check can prevent a frustrating mistake.

Don’t Aim for Perfect Free-Motion Quilting

Free-motion quilting can look beautiful when it’s slightly irregular.

For this owl, the sketchy thread-painted appearance is part of the design.

Practice on Scrap Fabric – Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

If you’re nervous about free-motion quilting, practice on a scrap sandwich of fabric and batting first.

Try moving the fabric slowly and then experiment with different speeds.

Why This Owl Applique Sewing Pattern Is Great for Beginners

This project combines several useful sewing techniques without requiring complicated construction.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Trace an applique pattern
  • Work with fusible web
  • Layer applique pieces
  • Position applique on background fabric
  • Stabilize a project with batting
  • Lower the feed dogs
  • Practice free-motion quilting
  • Add decorative stitching
  • Finish a fabric wall hanging

The applique itself is also forgiving.

You don’t have to create perfectly shaped individual pieces because the quilting adds additional definition.

That makes this Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners a great project if you’re just starting to explore machine applique.

Create Your Own Fall Owl Applique

Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

I hope you enjoyed making this free owl applique with me.

The pattern gives you a great starting point, but don’t be afraid to make the project your own.

Try different fabric combinations.

Use bright colours instead of traditional fall fabrics.

Experiment with different thread colours.

Or use the owl applique on something completely different from my wall hanging.

The goal is to have fun creating something that reflects your own style.

And remember, your free Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners is available in the Files section of my Faodail Creation Sewing, Quilting & Embroidery Group on Facebook.

The first item on my list of best appliqué items for sewing projects is something you probably already have in your sewing room: fabric.

However, not all fabric is created equally.

When you are making appliqué, the quality of your fabric can make a noticeable difference. Good-quality fabric generally has a more consistent, tightly woven structure, which can make it easier to cut and work with.

How to Choose Fabric for Appliqué – Best Appliqué Items for Sewing Projects

You don’t necessarily need to choose the most expensive fabric available. Instead, take a little time to look closely at the fabric before purchasing it.

Check the Weave – Best Appliqué Items for Sewing Projects

One thing I recommend looking at is the weave of the fabric.

Hold the fabric up and look at how tightly it is woven. If the fabric looks very thin or almost see-through, you may find that it doesn’t behave as well as a more tightly woven fabric.

Some inexpensive fabrics can also feel heavily starched or have a noticeably different texture. As you work with more fabrics, you’ll naturally become better at recognizing the difference between good-quality fabric and fabric that may not be ideal for your project.

Why Fabric Quality Matters – Best Appliqué Items for Sewing Projects

Appliqué pieces are often quite small, particularly when you’re working with detailed designs. You want your fabric to be stable enough to cut accurately and stitch without excessive fraying.

For raw-edge appliqué, in particular, the fabric edges will remain exposed, so choosing a fabric that behaves well is important.

You will develop your own preferences over time. The more appliqué projects you make, the easier it becomes to recognize which fabrics are going to give you the results you want.

2. Best Appliqué Item for Sewing Projects Freezer Paper

Best Appliqué Item for Sewing Projects Freezer Paper

The second item on my list of best appliqué items for sewing projects is freezer paper.

You can usually find freezer paper in the grocery store, depending on where you live. It is a surprisingly useful product to have in your sewing room.

Freezer paper can be used with more than one appliqué technique.

Using Freezer Paper for Appliqué

The type of appliqué I often demonstrate is raw-edge appliqué, but freezer paper can also be useful if you are working with turned-edge appliqué.

Freezer paper has a paper side and a slightly adhesive side. The adhesive side can temporarily stick to fabric when heated with an iron.

This makes it useful when you need a template or want to provide some stability while working with an appliqué shape.

Freezer Paper for Raw-Edge Appliqué – Best Appliqué Items for Sewing Projects

For raw-edge appliqué, you can use freezer paper as a template to help you create accurate shapes.

You can trace your design onto the freezer paper, cut out your template, and use it as a guide when preparing your fabric.

Freezer Paper for Turned-Edge Appliqué

Freezer paper can also be particularly useful for turned-edge appliqué.

When you are turning the fabric edges under, the freezer paper can provide a firm shape to press the fabric around. This can make it easier to achieve a clean edge.

Some sewists also use freezer paper for other sewing techniques, including English paper piecing.

3. Best Appliqué Item for Sewing Projects: Fusible Webbing

Best Appliqué Item for Sewing Projects: Fusible Webbing

Number three on my list of best appliqué items for sewing projects is fusible webbing.

If you’ve never used fusible webbing before, think of it as a type of fabric adhesive that allows you to temporarily or permanently attach an appliqué piece to your background fabric before stitching.

What Does Fusible Webbing Do?

Fusible webbing is applied to the wrong side of your appliqué fabric.

When heated with an iron, the adhesive melts and bonds the appliqué fabric to the fabric underneath it.

This is incredibly helpful because it keeps your appliqué pieces in place while you stitch around them.

How to Use Fusible Webbing – Best Appliqué Items for Sewing Projects

The general process is:

  1. Trace or transfer your appliqué design.
  2. Apply the fusible webbing to the wrong side of the fabric.
  3. Cut out your appliqué shape.
  4. Position the shape on your background fabric.
  5. Press it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  6. Stitch around the appliqué shape.

Always follow the instructions provided with your particular fusible webbing because different products can have different temperature and pressing requirements.

Where Can You Buy Fusible Webbing?

Fusible webbing is generally available from fabric stores, quilt shops, sewing stores, and online retailers.

There are many different types available, so you may want to experiment with a few to find the one that works best with your fabric and appliqué technique.

4. Best Appliqué Item for Sewing Projects – Spray Starch

Best Appliqué Item for Sewing Projects - Spray Starch

Number four is spray starch, and this is one of those simple products that can make preparing fabric much easier.

Why Use Spray Starch for Appliqué?

Before cutting your appliqué pieces, you want your fabric to be stable and easy to work with.

Spray starch can help give fabric a little more body, making it stiffer and easier to handle.

This can be particularly useful when you’re working with small appliqué shapes.

Preparing Fabric With Spray Starch – Best Appliqué Items for Sewing Projects

You can lightly starch your fabric before beginning your appliqué project.

The goal isn’t necessarily to make the fabric extremely stiff. You simply want to give it enough body that it is easier to cut, position, and handle.

Starching can also help reduce some of the movement in the fabric while you are working.

Does Starch Stop Fraying?

Spray starch can help make fabric easier to handle and may reduce the amount of fraying you experience, but it isn’t a permanent solution for preventing fabric edges from fraying.

If you’re working with raw-edge appliqué, remember that some fabrics will naturally fray more than others.

5. Best Appliqué Item for Sewing Projects – Pressing Mat and Teflon Sheet

Best Appliqué Item for Sewing Projects - Pressing Mat and Teflon Sheet

Number five on my list of best appliqué items for sewing projects is a good pressing setup.

I made my own DIY pressing mat, with one side functioning as a pressing surface and a Teflon sheet on the reverse side.

Why a Teflon Sheet Is Useful for Appliqué – Best Appliqué Items for Sewing Projects

A Teflon sheet is particularly useful when working with fusible webbing.

There are times when you want to fuse webbing to a piece of fabric, but you don’t want that piece to stick to your ironing surface or another part of your project.

This is where a Teflon sheet can be extremely helpful.

Nothing Sticks to the Teflon Surface

One of the biggest advantages of a Teflon sheet is that fusible products generally won’t stick to it in the same way they can stick to an unprotected ironing surface.

This means you can work with your fusible webbing without accidentally attaching your appliqué piece to your pressing mat.

It is a simple addition to your sewing room, but it can save you from a lot of frustration.

A Pressing Mat Is an Appliqué Essential – Best Appliqué Items for Sewing Projects

Pressing is an important part of appliqué.

Whether you’re fusing an appliqué shape to your background fabric or pressing fabric around a template, having a dedicated pressing area gives you a convenient workspace.

Always take care when working with a hot iron and follow the temperature recommendations for the fabrics and fusible products you’re using.

6. Best Appliqué Item for Sewing Projects Good-Quality Embroidery Thread

Best Appliqué Item for Sewing Projects Good-Quality Embroidery Thread

Number six is good-quality embroidery thread.

If you are stitching your appliqué using an embroidery machine or using embroidery stitches on your sewing machine, the thread you choose can make a big difference.

Choosing Embroidery Thread for Appliqué – Best Appliqué Items for Sewing Projects

There are many different brands and types of embroidery thread available, so I won’t tell you that you have to use one particular brand.

Instead, I recommend asking your sewing machine dealer or provider what they recommend for your particular machine.

You can also experiment with different threads to see which gives you the appearance and performance you want.

Why Thread Quality Matters

When you’re stitching around an appliqué shape, you want your stitches to look smooth and consistent.

Poor-quality thread can sometimes result in problems such as excessive lint, breakage, uneven stitching, or an unsatisfactory finish.

Good-quality embroidery thread is an investment that you can use for many different sewing and embroidery projects.

If you already own an embroidery machine, you may find that having a selection of embroidery thread gives you plenty of flexibility when creating appliqué designs.

7. Best Appliqué Item for Sewing Projects Tear-Away Stabilizer

Best Appliqué Item for Sewing Projects Tear-Away Stabilizer

The seventh and final item on my list of best appliqué items for sewing projects is tear-away stabilizer.

If you do machine embroidery, you may already have a supply of tear-away stabilizer in your sewing room.

What Is Tear-Away Stabilizer? – Best Appliqué Items for Sewing Projects

Tear-away stabilizer is placed behind your fabric to provide additional support while you stitch.

Once your embroidery or decorative stitching is complete, you can carefully tear the excess stabilizer away.

This makes it particularly convenient because you don’t have to leave the stabilizer permanently attached to your project.

Why Stabilizer Is Important

One of the problems you can encounter with machine embroidery and decorative stitching is puckering.

When the needle repeatedly penetrates the fabric, the fabric can move or become distorted. Without adequate stabilization, this can result in puckering around your stitching.

Using the appropriate stabilizer helps support the fabric while the machine stitches the design.

How to Use Tear-Away Stabilizer

The exact method will depend on your project, fabric, and machine, but the basic process is:

  1. Choose the appropriate stabilizer for your project.
  2. Place it behind the fabric.
  3. Secure the fabric and stabilizer as required.
  4. Complete your embroidery or decorative stitching.
  5. Remove the stabilizer carefully by tearing it away from the stitching.

Don’t simply assume that tear-away stabilizer is the correct stabilizer for every project. Different fabrics, designs, and embroidery techniques can require different types of stabilization.

How to Prepare for an Appliqué Sewing Project – Best Appliqué Items for Sewing Projects

Now that we’ve covered the best appliqué items for sewing projects, let’s put them together into a simple preparation process.

Step 1: Choose Your Fabric

Start with good-quality fabric that has a suitable weave and works well for the type of appliqué you’re creating.

If necessary, prepare the fabric with spray starch to give it additional body.

Step 2: Prepare Your Appliqué Pattern

Choose the appliqué design you want to make and determine which pieces need to be cut from each fabric.

If you’re using freezer paper, trace your shapes onto the paper and prepare your templates.

Step 3: Apply Fusible Webbing – Best Appliqué Items for Sewing Projects

If your appliqué technique calls for fusible webbing, apply it to the wrong side of your fabric.

Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for pressing.

Step 4: Cut Your Appliqué Pieces

Carefully cut around your appliqué shapes.

Take your time, particularly if your design has small or detailed sections.

Step 5: Position Your Appliqué

Place each appliqué piece onto your background fabric.

Check the placement before pressing because once you fuse a piece into position, you may not be able to move it easily.

Step 6: Press Your Appliqué

Place your project on your pressing surface and press according to the instructions for your fusible product.

A Teflon sheet can be particularly useful if you’re working with fusible webbing.

Step 7: Stitch Your Appliqué

Once your appliqué pieces are prepared and secured, stitch around the shapes using your chosen sewing machine or embroidery technique.

Choose a stitch that suits the look you’re trying to achieve.

Step 8: Add Stabilizer When Needed

If you’re using machine embroidery or decorative stitching, consider whether your project requires stabilizer.

Using the correct stabilizer can help prevent unwanted puckering and distortion.

What Are the Best Appliqué Items for Beginners?

If you’re completely new to appliqué, you don’t need to purchase everything at once.

Start with a few basic supplies:

  • Good-quality fabric
  • Freezer paper
  • Fusible webbing
  • Spray starch
  • A pressing mat
  • A Teflon sheet
  • Good-quality thread
  • Appropriate stabilizer

As you make more projects, you’ll learn which supplies you use most often.

Your preferred appliqué technique will also influence what you need. Someone who mainly creates raw-edge appliqué may use different supplies from someone who prefers turned-edge appliqué or machine embroidery.

How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners is a fun and beginner-friendly sewing project that can be used to decorate wall art, cushions, aprons, bags, quilts, clothing, and so much more. In this applique quilting tutorial for beginners, I’m going to show you how to applique a cute toadstool design using fabric, Steam-A-Seam, batting, and free-motion quilting.

I created this How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners pattern specifically so you can have fun experimenting with applique without needing an advanced sewing technique. This also makes it a great appliqué quilt tutorial for beginners who want to learn how to combine appliqué with quilting. The finished design can be used in many different ways, but I particularly love turning appliqué designs into fabric wall art.

As a Baby Lock Educator, I enjoy showing how you can take the sewing techniques you already know and turn them into creative projects that are both practical and decorative. You don’t need to be an expert quilter or have years of applique experience to make this project. It is a great way to practice working with small fabric pieces, layering materials, securing applique shapes, and adding free-motion quilting details.

For this project, I’m using a selection of fabric to create the different parts of the toadstool. You can choose traditional colours such as red and white, or completely change the colours to match your own sewing room, home decor, or project. One of the best things about applique is that there really isn’t a right or wrong colour combination. As a Baby Lock Educator, I love encouraging sewists to experiment and make each project their own.

The Steam-A-Seam helps hold the applique pieces in position before they are permanently secured. This makes the process much easier, especially if you are new to applique and want to concentrate on getting your pieces positioned correctly. Once the applique is in place, you can add stitching and quilting to give the design more definition and texture.

I also show you how I use batting and free-motion quilting to add dimension to the finished design. Free-motion quilting can seem intimidating when you are first starting out, but a small applique project like this is a great place to practice. You can experiment with simple lines, curves, or decorative stitching without committing to quilting an entire quilt.

As a Baby Lock Educator, I also enjoy demonstrating how your sewing machine can be used for more than simply constructing garments and quilts. Projects like this give you an opportunity to explore different sewing techniques and discover new ways to use your machine.

The finished toadstool applique can become a piece of fabric wall art, but that is only one possibility. You could use the same design on a cushion cover, tote bag, apron, quilt block, table runner, clothing, or another fabric project. You could even resize the pattern or combine several applique designs to create your own larger composition.

The free toadstool applique pattern is available in my Facebook group, where you can find other free sewing patterns, templates, tutorials, and project inspiration. This is a great project to try if you enjoy simple sewing projects and want to experiment with applique without having to purchase a complicated pattern.

Whether you are completely new to applique or simply looking for a quick and creative project, I hope this tutorial gives you some inspiration. As a Baby Lock Educator, I love sharing approachable sewing techniques that help you build confidence while having fun with your sewing machine.

So gather your favourite fabrics, some Steam-A-Seam, batting, and your sewing machine, and let’s get started creating this cute toadstool applique!

Before you begin your free toadstool applique, gather everything you need and prepare your fabrics. Having everything ready before you start will make the applique process much easier.

You can change the materials depending on what you are making. If you’re putting your toadstool applique onto a cushion, apron, bag, quilt or another sewing project, you won’t need the canvas.

Choosing Fabric for Your Toadstool Applique – How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Choosing Fabric for Your Toadstool Applique - How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

You can use whatever colours you like for your free toadstool applique. I chose a bright red fabric for the top of the toadstool and contrasting fabrics for the other sections.

Don’t worry if your fabric pieces aren’t absolutely perfect at this stage. The applique process is quite forgiving, and you can trim the pieces as you work.

How to Applique the Toadstool With Steam-A-Seam

I like using Steam-A-Seam for applique because it gives the fabric some stability and helps prevent the edges from fraying.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using your fusible adhesive and iron.

Step 1: Prepare Your Fabric for the Free Toadstool Applique – How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Prepare Your Fabric for the Free Toadstool Applique - How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Start by turning on your iron so it is ready when you need it.

Before beginning your free toadstool applique, press all of your fabric pieces. You want your fabric to be nice and flat before tracing and applying the fusible adhesive.

If your fabric has wrinkles or creases, they can make it more difficult to trace your pattern accurately.

Press each piece carefully and set your fabric aside.

Step 2: Trace the Toadstool Applique Pattern – How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Trace the Toadstool Applique Pattern - How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Take your free toadstool applique pattern and begin tracing the larger pieces first.

I started with the top of the toadstool. Trace around the basic shape, but don’t worry about making the tracing absolutely perfect. This simple technique tracing method is easy for beginners and will help you get comfortable working with applique templates.

Once you have traced the toadstool top, cut around the outside of your traced line. Don’t cut directly on the line at this stage. Leave a small amount of extra fabric around the shape.

Next, trace the stem of the toadstool.

When tracing the stem, allow the shape to extend slightly beyond the underside of the toadstool top. This gives you a little extra fabric that can tuck underneath the top section when you assemble the toadstool applique.

Finally, trace the circles and other smaller sections of the design. Using this technique tracing method will help you keep all of your applique pieces organized and ready to assemble.

If you are having difficulty seeing the pattern, place it near a window or use a light box. This can make tracing the smaller details much easier.

Step 3: Find the Centre of Your Applique Project – How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Find the Centre of Your Applique Project - How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Before applying your free toadstool applique, decide where you want the design to sit.

If you want to find the centre of your fabric, simply fold the fabric in half and then fold it in half again.

Pinch the corner where the folds meet and then open the fabric.

You should have a small crosshatch marking the centre of your fabric. This gives you a useful reference point when positioning your applique.

Remember that you don’t have to centre your design if you don’t want to. You can place the toadstool applique wherever you think it looks best.

Step 4: Apply Steam-A-Seam to Your Toadstool Applique Fabric – How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Apply Steam-A-Seam to Your Toadstool Applique Fabric - How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Now it is time to prepare the individual pieces of your free toadstool applique.

Take your larger piece of red fabric for the toadstool top and place it behind the corresponding section of your pattern.

Cut a piece of Steam-A-Seam slightly larger than the traced shape. You only need a small amount of extra fabric around the outside.

If you accidentally get the adhesive on the wrong side, don’t panic.

Sometimes the glue can stick to the wrong side of the Steam-A-Seam. If that happens, gently press the glue onto your thumb, transfer it to the correct side, and carefully peel away the paper.

Place the adhesive onto the reverse side of your fabric.

Continue doing this with each section of the toadstool applique.

Once the adhesive is attached, press it using your iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Allow each piece to cool completely. This is important because the adhesive needs time to cool and bond properly with the fabric.

Preparing the Smaller Applique Pieces – How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Continue preparing the smaller pieces of your free toadstool applique.

You may notice that one of the spotted sections is larger than the others. Pay particular attention to this piece when preparing your fabric.

The other spots can be cut from the same-sized pieces of fabric.

If you accidentally cut an extra piece, don’t worry! You can always use it as an additional spot on your toadstool.

Step 5: Cut Out Your Applique Pieces – How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Cut Out Your Applique Pieces - How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once all of your fabric has been fused to the Steam-A-Seam, go back through each piece and carefully cut it out.

This time, cut directly on the applique line.

Take your time with the smaller pieces because clean edges will make positioning your free toadstool applique much easier.

You should now have all of your individual fabric pieces ready to assemble.

Step 6: Arrange the Toadstool Applique – How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Arrange the Toadstool Applique - How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Now we can start putting the toadstool applique together.

Remove the paper backing from the bottom section and position it onto your background fabric.

Next, remove the paper from the toadstool top and place it above the stem.

Make sure there is a small amount of overlap between the pieces. This helps create a neat finished design.

Now it’s time to add the spots.

There really isn’t a right or wrong way to arrange the spots on your free toadstool applique. You can follow the pattern or move them around and create your own design.

I like adding the larger piece toward the bottom and then arranging the smaller pieces around it.

You can also add extra spots if you want to make your toadstool more decorative.

Have Fun With Your Toadstool Applique

This is one of my favourite things about applique. You don’t have to make every project exactly the same.

Once you understand how to applique, you can change the colours, shapes and placement to create something that is completely your own.

When you’re happy with the arrangement, press everything with your iron.

This will permanently adhere the applique pieces to your background fabric.

Step 7: Add Batting to Your Applique – How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Before moving to the sewing machine, place your 11 x 11-inch piece of quilter’s batting onto the reverse side of your fabric.

The batting provides some stabilization for the next stage.

Pin everything securely so the layers don’t move while you are free-motion quilting.

This is particularly important because we are going to lower the feed dogs on the sewing machine.

Step 8: Free-Motion Quilt Around the Toadstool Applique – How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Free-Motion Quilt Around the Toadstool Applique - How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Now we are ready to sew our free toadstool applique.

For my project, I used a Baby Lock Altair 2 sewing machine.

I used black embroidery thread in both the top of the machine and the bobbin. I also used a 90/14 Microtex needle and an open-toe foot for free-motion quilting.

Lower the feed dogs on your sewing machine.

On my Baby Lock Altair 2, this can be done using the one-touch button.

Lower the presser foot and needle, and hold onto the thread tails as you begin sewing.

I like using black thread because it gives the toadstool applique a fun, sketchy appearance.

How to Applique With Free-Motion Quilting – How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

If you’ve never tried free-motion quilting before, this is a great project to practise with.

You aren’t trying to create a perfectly straight or precise line. Instead, simply follow the edges of your applique.

I like to sew around each line approximately three times.

Move the fabric as you sew to make it comfortable for your hands. You want to have good control of the fabric without trying to force it through the machine.

Don’t worry about making your lines perfectly identical.

The slightly imperfect, sketchy look is part of the charm.

Free-Motion Quilting Tips for Toadstool Applique

When you reach the end of one section, you don’t necessarily need to stop, cut your thread and start again.

You can continue moving around the design where appropriate.

For the individual circles, I recommend working around each circle separately.

Start by sewing the sections attached to the top of the toadstool applique, then work your way around the rest of the design.

If you’ve never done free-motion quilting before, this is a simple way to become more comfortable with moving your fabric while sewing.

Step 9: Turn Your Toadstool Applique Into Wall Art – How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Turn Your Toadstool Applique Into Wall Art - How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once your free toadstool applique is completely quilted, you can turn it into wall art.

I love using applique designs this way because they become unique pieces of handmade home décor.

For my project, I attached the fabric to a 12 x 12-inch canvas.

I have another detailed tutorial showing how to attach fabric to a canvas, which is helpful if you want to create your own applique wall art.

You could also frame the finished piece instead of using a canvas.

A cute toadstool applique would look especially lovely in a child’s bedroom, playroom, sewing room or craft space.

Step 10: Enjoy Your Free Toadstool Applique – How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

And that’s it!

You now know how to applique a cute toadstool design using fusible adhesive and free-motion quilting.

The great thing about this free toadstool applique is that you don’t have to use it only for wall art.

You could add the design to a cushion, apron, quilt, tote bag, table runner, clothing or another fabric project.

You can also change the colours and placement to make your toadstool completely unique.

Final Thoughts on How to Applique – How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

How to Applique a Free Toadstool Applique

I hope this free toadstool applique tutorial has inspired you to give applique a try.

If you are new to applique, don’t worry about making everything perfect. Start with simple shapes, practise applying the fusible adhesive and then experiment with stitching around your design.

Free-motion quilting can seem intimidating at first, but following the edges of an applique is a very approachable way to practise.

I particularly love the sketchy effect created by sewing around the design several times with black thread.

You don’t need to make wall art if you don’t want to. The same how to applique process can be used for cushions, clothing, quilts and many other projects.

How to Applique | Trace the Fox Pattern Pieces

Step 3: Trace the Main Fox Pattern – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Trace the Main Fox Pattern - How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Place your fusible adhesive over the fox pattern and begin tracing the main section of the fox.

Trace carefully around the outline.

If you are having difficulty seeing the pattern through the fusible adhesive, place the pattern against a window so the light shines through it.

You can also use a light box if you have one.

Don’t worry if you aren’t able to trace every detail perfectly. The important thing is to capture the individual shapes accurately.

Step 4: Leave Extra Space Around the Main Pattern – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

When tracing the main fox shape, don’t cut directly on the traced line.

Leave a small amount of extra space around the outside of the pattern.

This is especially important around areas where another applique piece will overlap the main fox.

For example, the muzzle needs to sit underneath part of the main fox shape, so leaving a little extra room will allow the pieces to overlap correctly.

Step 5: Trace the Remaining Fox Pieces

Continue tracing the remaining sections of the fox.

Trace the muzzle, ears, eyes, nose and any other individual pieces included in the pattern.

For the smaller pieces, you can trace closer to the actual outline because you don’t need as much extra space.

Once you have finished, check that you have traced every piece before moving on.

How to Applique | Prepare the Fabric

Step 6: Press Your Fabric – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Before applying the fusible adhesive, check your fabrics for creases.

If your fabric is wrinkled, press it with your iron until it is smooth.

Starting with flat fabric will make the rest of the how to applique process much easier.

Step 7: Choose and Audition Your Fabrics

Choose and Audition Your Fabrics

Lay your fabrics out together before attaching the adhesive.

Move the different colours around and decide which fabrics you want to use for each section of the fox.

This is what I like to call auditioning your fabric.

It gives you the opportunity to see how everything looks together before you commit to your choices.

How to Applique | Apply Fusible Adhesive

Step 8: Check the Adhesive Side – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

I use Steam-A-Seam for my applique projects.

It is a two-sided fusible adhesive that helps hold the fabric pieces in place and can help minimize fraying around the applique edges.

Before applying it, check which side contains the adhesive.

Sometimes the glue can be on the opposite side from the one you expect.

If that happens, gently lift the adhesive with your thumb and move it to the correct side.

Step 9: Fuse the Pattern Pieces to Fabric

Place each traced pattern piece onto the wrong side of your chosen fabric.

Make sure the adhesive is positioned correctly.

Use a hot iron to fuse the adhesive to the fabric.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the particular fusible product you are using, including the recommended temperature and pressing time.

Once the piece has been fused, set it aside and allow it to cool completely.

Repeat this process for every fox applique piece.

How to Applique | Cut Out the Fox Pieces

Step 10: Cut Along the Pattern Lines – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Cut Along the Pattern Lines - How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once all of your fabric pieces have completely cooled, you can cut them out.

Use sharp fabric scissors and carefully cut directly along the traced lines.

Because you left extra space when initially tracing the main piece, you can now trim the fox accurately.

Continue until you have all of the individual fabric pieces ready.

You should now have everything you need to assemble your fox.

How to Applique | Prepare the Background Fabric

Step 11: Press Your Background Fabric

Take the fabric you are going to applique your fox onto.

For my wall hanging, I used a 16 x 16-inch piece of backing fabric.

Give the fabric a final press to make sure it is smooth before positioning your applique.

Step 12: Find the Centre of Your Fabric – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Fold your background fabric in half.

Then fold it in half again in the opposite direction.

Pinch the point where the folds meet to identify the centre of the fabric.

Use a friction pen to mark a small cross at the centre.

This gives you a reference point for positioning your fox.

How to Applique | Arrange the Fox Design

Step 13: Remove the Paper Backing

Take one of your fabric applique pieces and carefully remove the paper backing.

This will reveal another adhesive layer underneath.

Be careful not to distort the fabric as you remove the paper.

Step 14: Position the Main Fox Piece

Position the Main Fox Piece

Place the main fox piece onto your background fabric.

Use the centre mark you made earlier to help position the design.

Don’t press everything permanently into place yet.

At this stage, you can still lift and reposition the pieces if you aren’t happy with their placement.

Step 15: Add the Muzzle – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Place the muzzle onto the main fox section.

Make sure it sits underneath the appropriate part of the main fox shape.

Move it around until you are happy with how the pieces overlap.

Take your time with this section because the positioning of the muzzle can make a big difference to the finished face.

Step 16: Add the Ears, Eyes and Nose

Continue adding the remaining fox pieces.

Position the ears first, followed by the eyes and nose.

Look carefully at the entire design as you work.

If something doesn’t look quite right, simply lift the piece and reposition it before you permanently fuse the design.

How to Applique | Fuse the Fox Into Place – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Step 17: Check the Complete Design

Before reaching for your iron, stop and check the whole fox.

Make sure the ears, eyes, nose and muzzle are all where you want them.

Check that the overlapping pieces are positioned correctly.

This is your last opportunity to move the pieces easily.

Step 18: Press the Applique

Once you are happy with the arrangement, use your iron to fuse the fox pieces to the background fabric.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your fusible adhesive.

Press carefully and make sure the pieces are securely attached.

Allow the project to cool before moving on to the sewing stage.

How to Applique | Add Quilters Batting

Step 19: Position the Quilters Batting – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Position the Quilters Batting - How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Because I want to add free-motion quilting to my fox applique, I need some stabilization behind the fabric.

For my project, I use an 11 x 11-inch piece of quilters batting.

Place the batting behind the applique area.

The batting provides support and gives you a layer to quilt through.

If you are using your fox applique on a sweatshirt, apron or cushion, your stabilizing method may be different depending on the project.

How to Applique | Set Up Your Sewing Machine

Step 20: Thread Your Sewing Machine

For this tutorial, I am using my Baby Lock Altair.

I am using black embroidery thread in the top of the machine and in the bobbin.

The black thread creates a defined outline around the fox and helps the individual applique pieces stand out.

Thread your machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 21: Insert a 90/14 Needle – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Install a 90/14 sewing needle into your sewing machine.

Make sure the needle is properly inserted and securely tightened before you begin sewing.

If your machine or fabric requires a different needle, follow the recommendations for your particular setup.

Step 22: Attach the Free-Motion Quilting Foot

Attach the Free-Motion Quilting Foot

Attach your free-motion quilting foot to the sewing machine.

You will also need to lower the feed dogs.

On my Baby Lock, I can lower the feed dogs using a button, which makes this particularly easy.

If you are using another machine, check your manual to find out how your feed dogs are lowered.

How to Applique | Stitch Around the Fox

Step 23: Start Stitching the Main Outline – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Begin stitching around the main outline of the fox.

Guide the fabric smoothly underneath the needle while following the edge of the applique.

You don’t have to be perfect.

The stitching is handmade, and small variations are completely fine.

Step 24: Stitch Around the Fox Face

How to Applique

Once the main section of the face is complete, continue around the muzzle.

Then move to the nose and other sections of the face.

Work on one section at a time rather than trying to complete the whole fox in one continuous line.

Step 25: Stitch the Ears and Eyes

Continue by stitching around the ears and eyes.

I like to go around the applique outlines at least three times.

Repeating the stitching gives the design a stronger outline and helps define the different pieces.

Step 26: Don’t Worry About Perfect Stitching – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Don't Worry About Perfect Stitching - How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

If this is your first time doing free-motion quilting, don’t put pressure on yourself to make every stitch perfect.

Keep your hands moving steadily and concentrate on following the outline.

If you are nervous, practise first on a scrap piece of fabric with batting.

The more you practise, the more comfortable you will become.

How to Applique | Turn Your Fox Into Wall Art

Step 27: Prepare the Canvas

For my finished project, I am using a 12 x 12-inch canvas frame.

Place your finished fox applique over the canvas and check that it is centred and positioned correctly.

Before securing it, look at the front of the project to make sure you are happy with the placement.

Step 28: Secure the Fabric With a Glue Stick – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Turn the project over so you can work on the back.

I like to use a glue stick to help hold the fabric and batting in place.

Apply a small amount where needed and press the fabric into position.

The glue helps prevent the layers from shifting while you staple the fabric to the canvas.

Step 29: Staple the First Side

Staple the First Side

Fold the excess fabric over the back of the canvas.

Use your staple gun to secure the fabric.

Pull the fabric gently so that it remains smooth without stretching it excessively.

Step 30: Staple the Opposite Side – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once one side is secure, move to the opposing side.

Pull the fabric gently and staple it into position.

Working on opposite sides helps maintain even tension across the front of your wall hanging.

Step 31: Finish the Remaining Sides

Continue folding and stapling the fabric around the back of the canvas.

Work between opposing sides rather than completely finishing one side at a time.

Once all four sides are secured, trim away any excess fabric if necessary.

How to Applique | Finish Your Fox Wall Hanging

Step 32: Check Your Finished Applique – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Turn the canvas over and inspect your finished fox.

Check that the fabric is smooth and that the applique is securely attached.

Make any final adjustments to the back if necessary.

Your adorable fox wall hanging is now complete!

How to Applique a Sunflower – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

How to Applique a Sunflower - How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

If you are learning how to applique, this sunflower is a great project to start with. The design has multiple petals, a simple centre and a leaf, so you can practise working with several applique pieces while still keeping the project manageable.

For my wall hanging, I am using a 12 x 12-inch artist canvas. I find these canvases inexpensive and they work really well for displaying finished applique projects.

I also use quilter’s batting underneath the fabric. The batting helps give the finished project a little more dimension and prevents the fabric from looking completely flat against the canvas.

You will need:

For my project, I cut my backing fabric approximately 16 x 16 inches. I also cut my quilter’s batting approximately 11 x 11 inches so it fits over the front of the canvas.

Prepare the Pattern – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Prepare the Pattern - How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

The first stage when learning how to applique is preparing all of your applique pieces.

The sunflower pattern includes 19 petals, the centre of the sunflower and a leaf. You can trace every petal individually if you want to follow the pattern exactly.

However, I prefer to make this process a little easier.

Trace the Sunflower Petals – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Take one petal from the pattern and use it as your template. This simple technique tracing method makes it easy to create multiple matching pieces for your sunflower applique.

Place your fusible web over the pattern and trace around the petal using a pencil. I like using Steam-A-Seam because it is fusible on both sides and makes positioning the pieces much easier later. This technique tracing method is especially helpful when working with multiple applique shapes because you can quickly create all the pieces you need.

You need 19 sunflower petals.

Rather than tracing every petal individually, you can repeatedly trace the same petal 19 times. This saves time and ensures that all your petals are similar.

When tracing your petals, pay attention to the centre of the sunflower.

The petal needs to overlap slightly into the area where the sunflower centre will eventually sit. This gives you room to tuck the petal underneath the centre when you assemble your applique.

Trace the Centre and Leaf – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Trace the Centre and Leaf - How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once all 19 petals have been traced, trace the centre of the sunflower.

You can also trace the leaf as one complete applique piece.

If you find it difficult to see the pattern through the fusible web, use a light box. You can also place the pattern against a bright window and trace it that way.

This is a simple tip that can make how to applique much easier when working with detailed patterns.

Keep Track of Your Pieces

As you trace your petals, write the number beside each piece.

For example, number your petals from 1 to 19.

This is particularly useful when you are working with a larger applique pattern because it means you don’t have to keep stopping to count everything again.

How to Applique: Fuse the Fabric – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once all your pattern pieces have been traced, it is time to attach the fusible web to your fabric.

This is one of the most important stages when learning how to applique because correct placement of the fusible web will make the rest of the project much easier.

Place the Fusible Web on the Fabric – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Place the Fusible Web on the Fabric - How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Start with your sunflower petals.

Check your fabric carefully because you need to identify the right side and wrong side.

The fusible web needs to be attached to the wrong side of your fabric.

Before removing the paper backing completely, audition the piece against the fabric to make sure the adhesive is facing the correct direction.

Steam-A-Seam can be used from either side, so it is easy to accidentally place the adhesive on the wrong side.

If necessary, gently press the adhesive over to the correct side before attaching it to the fabric.

Place the fusible web onto the wrong side of your fabric.

Press the Applique Pieces – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular fusible web and press the pieces with your iron.

Do not guess the pressing time because different products can have different requirements.

Once each piece has been fused, allow it to cool completely before moving on to the next stage.

Repeat this process for all 19 petals.

Then fuse the sunflower centre and the leaf.

Keeping your iron switched on is useful because you will need it again when assembling the sunflower.

Cut the Pieces – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Cut the Pieces - How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

After the fabric and fusible web have completely cooled, it is time to cut out your applique pieces.

Use sharp fabric scissors for this stage.

Carefully cut around each sunflower petal, the centre and the leaf.

You don’t need to cut the pieces out before fusing them to the fabric. In fact, I find it easier to fuse first and cut afterwards.

The fusible web helps stabilize the fabric and also helps minimize fraying around the edges.

Check Every Piece

Before moving on, lay all your pieces out on your work surface.

You should have:

  • 19 sunflower petals
  • 1 sunflower centre
  • 1 leaf

Check that everything has been cut cleanly.

If you are following a How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners this is also a good time to compare your pieces with the original pattern before assembling the design.

How to Applique: Position the Sunflower – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

How to Applique: Position the Sunflower - How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Now comes the fun part!

This is where you learn how to applique your individual fabric pieces into one finished design.

Take the background fabric that you want to applique onto and give it a good press.

For my wall hanging, I am positioning the sunflower centrally near the bottom portion of my canvas.

However, you don’t have to position your sunflower in exactly the same place.

Arrange the Sunflower Centre

Peel away the paper backing from your sunflower centre.

This reveals the sticky side of the fusible web.

Place the centre onto your background fabric.

Because the fusible web is sticky, you can lift the piece and reposition it while you are arranging the rest of your design.

This is one of the reasons I love using Steam-A-Seam when teaching How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners.

Arrange the Petals

Start placing your petals around the sunflower centre.

Remember that the petals should tuck slightly underneath the centre.

You don’t have to place every petal perfectly straight away.

In fact, I recommend placing several pieces first and then stepping back to look at the whole sunflower.

Move the petals around until the sunflower looks balanced and proportional.

You can make some petals slightly closer together and others slightly farther apart.

The great thing about how to applique is that you can add your own personality to the design.

Add the Leaf – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once you are happy with the petals, position your leaf.

Again, you don’t have to copy my exact placement.

Try moving the leaf slightly to the left or right until you are happy with how your sunflower looks.

This is your project, so have fun with it!

How to Applique: Fuse the Design – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Before pressing, take one final look at your sunflower.

Make sure every petal is exactly where you want it.

Check that the centre is covering the ends of the petals and that the leaf is positioned correctly.

Once everything is in place, press the entire applique according to the manufacturer’s instructions for your fusible web.

The heat will activate the adhesive and permanently attach the applique pieces to your background fabric.

Allow everything to cool before continuing.

How to Applique with Free-Motion Quilting – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

One of my favourite parts of learning how to applique is adding the stitching around the fabric shapes.

For this sunflower, I am using black embroidery thread to create a strong outline around the petals, leaf and centre.

You can use a matching thread colour instead if you prefer a softer appearance.

Prepare Your Sewing Machine

I am using my Baby Lock sewing and embroidery machine for this project.

Set your machine up for free-motion quilting.

I use:

  • Black embroidery thread in the top
  • Black embroidery thread in the bobbin
  • A 90/14 needle
  • Free-motion quilting foot
  • Feed dogs lowered

You will also need some type of stabilization underneath your fabric.

For my project, I have pinned quilter’s batting to the back of the fabric.

Why Use Free-Motion Quilting?

Free-motion quilting is a great way to secure your applique pieces while also adding decorative stitching.

If you are new to free-motion quilting, this sunflower is excellent practice.

You don’t need to create perfectly straight lines.

In fact, I think the sunflower looks better when the stitching is slightly scribbly and organic.

How to Applique the Sunflower Petals – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Start with the outside edge of a petal.

Move the fabric underneath the needle and follow the shape of the applique.

I like to go around each shape approximately three times.

Don’t worry if your lines aren’t identical.

The slightly imperfect, scribbly appearance gives the sunflower character and makes it look handmade.

Continue around each petal.

Take your time and concentrate on controlling the movement of your fabric.

Stitch the Leaf – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Stitch the Leaf - How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once the petals are complete, move onto the leaf.

Follow the outer edge of the leaf with your free-motion quilting foot.

You can also add additional stitching inside the leaf if you want more detail.

The black thread creates a strong outline and makes the applique design really stand out.

Stitch the Sunflower Centre – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Finally, stitch around the inside portion of the sunflower centre.

You can use the same scribbly free-motion quilting technique.

Don’t worry about making everything perfect.

If you are practising How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners, remember that free-motion quilting improves with practice. The more you do it, the more comfortable you will become controlling your fabric.

How to Applique on a Canvas

How to Applique on a Canvas

Once your sunflower applique is complete, you can turn it into a wall hanging.

This is an optional part of the project.

You can use the exact same How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners technique on a cushion cover, apron, quilt, tote bag or another sewing project.

Add the Batting – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

For my wall hanging, I use an inexpensive 12 x 12-inch artist canvas.

I cut a piece of quilter’s batting approximately 11 x 11 inches.

The batting creates a little bit of puffiness behind the fabric and helps the finished sunflower look more dimensional.

Place the batting over the front of the canvas and secure it.

Attach the Fabric – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Place your finished sunflower fabric over the canvas.

Make sure the design is positioned exactly how you want it before securing anything.

Pull the fabric around the back of the canvas.

You want the fabric to be smooth and reasonably taut, but don’t pull it so hard that you distort the sunflower.

Staple the First Side

Fold the fabric neatly over the back of the canvas and staple it into place.

Work your way along one side.

Once the first side is secured, move to the opposite side.

Pull the fabric gently so that you can remove any slack.

Staple the opposite side.

Continue working around the canvas, alternating between opposite sides.

This helps keep the fabric taut and prevents wrinkles.

When all four sides are secured, trim away any excess fabric if necessary.

How to Applique : Finishing Your Sunflower – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

How to Applique

And that’s it!

You now know how to applique a beautiful sunflower design and turn it into a cheerful wall hanging.

I love how the black stitching creates such a strong outline around the sunflower.

However, you don’t have to use black thread.

You can use thread that matches your fabric for a softer and more traditional applique appearance.

You could also experiment with different colours to create completely different looks.

How to Applique Other Projects – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once you understand How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners, you can use this same technique on so many sewing projects.

Try adding the sunflower design to:

  • Cushion covers
  • Aprons
  • Quilts
  • Tote bags
  • Table runners
  • Placemats
  • Wall hangings
  • Sewing room decor
  • Clothing
  • Fabric baskets

You can also use the same basic technique with other applique patterns.

The most important thing is to experiment and have fun.

Try Different Thread Colours – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

One simple way to change the appearance of your applique is to change the thread colour.

Black thread gives the sunflower a bold outline.

Matching thread creates a more subtle finish.

You could also use decorative or variegated embroidery thread for something completely different.

Experiment with Fabric – How to Applique | FREE Sunflower Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Another great thing about how to applique is that you can use different fabrics to create different effects.

Try floral fabrics, batiks, solids, small prints or even scraps from previous sewing projects.

This sunflower is also a great scrap-busting project because many of the pieces are relatively small.

Materials Used for the How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt

Before beginning your How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt, gather all your materials together.

Having everything prepared before you start will make the project much easier and allow you to concentrate on each stage of the quilt.

Fabric Materials – How to Applique – Daisy Lap Quilt

You will need the fabrics specified in your Daisy Lap Quilt pattern.

The fabrics used in this quilt include:

  • Quilting cotton for the main quilt sections
  • Jelly roll strips for the pieced sections
  • Dark green fabric for the stems
  • Light green fabric for the leaves
  • Yellow fabric for the centres of the daisies
  • White fabric for the daisy petals
  • Backing fabric
  • Batting
  • Fabric for the binding

The exact amount of fabric you require will depend on the pattern and finished quilt size.

Applique Materials – How to Applique – Daisy Lap Quilt

For the applique part of the How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt, you will need:

  • HeatnBond Lite
  • Applique pattern templates
  • Light box or bright window
  • Sharpie
  • Paper scissors
  • Fabric scissors
  • Pins

HeatnBond Lite is used to attach the applique pieces to the quilt before stitching.

Sewing and Quilting Supplies – How to Applique – Daisy Lap Quilt

You will also need:

For this project, I am using my Baby Lock Soprano sewing machine.

I am not paid or sponsored to create this tutorial.

I am using a quarter-inch piecing stitch with a quarter-inch foot with a guide. If your machine does not have the same stitch, you can use another suitable piecing stitch while maintaining an accurate quarter-inch seam allowance.

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Preparing the Quilt Top

Before we begin the applique, we first need to construct the main quilt top.

For this part of the project, I am working with the A, B and C sections from the pattern.

There is a fairly strong centre line in the fabric that I want to remove, so the first thing I am going to do is take the pieces to the ironing board and press them.

Pressing your fabric before sewing is an important step.

It helps remove unwanted creases and gives you a flatter, more accurate surface to work with.

Step 1: Sew the A and B Sections – How to Applique – Daisy Lap Quilt

The first sections we are going to sew are A and B.

Take the A strip and place it right sides together with the B strip.

If you are following the pattern, use the diagram to make sure you have the pieces positioned correctly.

Sew the two strips together using a quarter-inch seam allowance.

Using a Quarter-Inch Seam

For my How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt, I am using my Baby Lock Soprano.

I have selected Stitch 30, which is a piecing stitch.

When I use my quarter-inch foot with the guide, this helps me maintain the correct quarter-inch seam allowance.

If your machine does not have Stitch 30, you can use Stitch 29 or Stitch 31, or another suitable piecing stitch on your own machine.

The most important thing is to maintain a consistent seam allowance.

Thread and Needle

I am using bobbin thread in my bobbin and white polyester thread in the top.

I am also using a 90/14 Microtex needle.

Your own thread and needle choice may vary depending on your fabric and sewing machine.

Step 2: Trim and Press the Seams

Once you have sewn your seam, check both ends of the strip.

Trim away any excess fabric.

Make sure the edge is straight.

Then take the piece to your ironing board and press the seam.

Pressing as you go will help keep the quilt top flat and accurate.

Continue Adding the Strips

Next, sew the grey section into place.

After the grey section, we are going to use the white A unit and sew it to the other side of the C section.

Continue following the diagram.

Rotate the remaining strips as shown in the pattern.

Remember to trim away excess fabric after sewing each section and press as you go.

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Making the Side Borders

Once the main quilt section is assembled, we can begin making the left and right borders.

For one side, you will need the E pieces and three of the F squares.

Step 3: Assemble the Side Border

Take one of the squares and attach it to the bottom of one of the rectangles.

Sew the pieces together using your quarter-inch seam.

Next, take another strip and sew it to the opposite end of the square.

Continue sewing the squares and rectangles together according to your pattern.

Follow the Pattern Carefully

Make sure that your squares and rectangles are facing the correct direction.

The order of the pieces is important because it creates the finished border design.

Once your side border is assembled, repeat the process for the opposite side.

Step 4: Trim the Side Borders – How to Applique – Daisy Lap Quilt

The side borders are intentionally slightly longer than the quilt.

Before attaching them, trim approximately half an inch from each end as directed by the pattern.

Sew one side border onto the quilt.

Then repeat the process for the opposite side.

Again, trim half an inch from both ends where necessary.

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Making the Top and Bottom Borders

Now we can make the top and bottom borders.

These borders use a combination of squares and rectangles.

Step 5: Assemble the Top and Bottom Borders – How to Applique – Daisy Lap Quilt

Start with a square.

Then add a rectangle.

Follow this with another square.

Continue following the pattern instructions.

Do not sew the final square into place immediately because another small adjustment needs to be made.

For the bottom border, you will have two ends without the yellow square.

Cut away approximately a quarter of an inch where required.

Then sew the final yellow square into place.

Attach the Borders

Now attach the top and bottom borders to the quilt.

At this stage, the main quilt top should be completely assembled.

Now we can begin the applique.

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Preparing the Applique

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Preparing the Applique

This is where the floral design really begins to come together.

For the applique in my How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt, I am using HeatnBond Lite and a light box.

If you don’t have a light box, you can use a bright window instead.

The applique consists of stems, leaves, daisy petals and daisy centres.

Step 6: Trace the Applique Templates – How to Applique – Daisy Lap Quilt

Place your applique pattern onto your light box.

I recommend taping the base layer to the light box so that it doesn’t move while you are tracing.

Cut your HeatnBond approximately the same size as your paper template.

You can also tape it into position if necessary.

Using a Sharpie, trace around every individual applique shape.

It doesn’t have to be absolutely perfect.

Just make sure you trace all of the shapes.

Label the Applique Pieces

Make sure you copy the letters or numbers from the pattern onto your traced pieces.

These markings will help you identify where the pieces belong.

Trace the design three times if required by your pattern.

You should now have three HeatnBond copies ready to prepare.

Step 7: Cut Around the Applique Templates

Cut Around the Applique Templates

Do not cut directly on the black line yet.

Instead, use your paper scissors to cut around each section.

Leave a small amount of space around the outside of the traced line.

This makes the pieces easier to handle when you attach them to the fabric.

Save Your HeatnBond Scraps

Don’t throw away the leftover HeatnBond.

Place your unused pieces into a Ziploc bag or plastic container.

Some applique shapes can be very small, and these scraps can be useful for future projects.

It is a simple way to reduce waste.

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Adding HeatnBond to the Fabric

Now we can attach the HeatnBond pieces to the fabrics.

For my Daisy Lap Quilt, I am using dark green for the stems, light green for the leaves, yellow for the daisy centres and white for the petals.

Step 8: Attach the HeatnBond

Attach the HeatnBond

Position each HeatnBond piece onto the appropriate fabric.

Try to place the pieces close to the fabric edge so you don’t waste material.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully when applying heat.

The pressing time and temperature are important, so always check the instructions supplied with your HeatnBond.

Remember Your Applique Will Be Reversed

This is an important thing to remember when learning How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt.

Applique designs are reversed when transferred onto fabric.

Therefore, your daisy may face the opposite direction from the diagram.

If you want the finished applique to face the same direction as the original drawing, you will need to reverse the design before tracing.

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Cutting the Applique Pieces

Once the HeatnBond has been attached to the fabric, you can cut out the individual applique shapes.

Step 9: Cut the Applique – How to Applique – Daisy Lap Quilt

Now take your fabric scissors and carefully cut around the black outline.

Cut all the stems, leaves, petals and daisy centres.

When finished, you should have all your applique pieces ready to position on the quilt.

Arrange Before Pressing

Lay the applique pieces onto your quilt top before permanently pressing them.

This gives you the opportunity to change the arrangement.

Originally, I planned to have my leaves coming from underneath the stem.

However, I actually preferred the look of the leaves coming from above the stem.

This is one of the fun things about applique.

You can make your own creative decisions and personalize your quilt.

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Attaching the Applique

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Attaching the Applique

Now that all the applique pieces are prepared, we can attach them to the quilt.

Step 10: Position the Stems – How to Applique – Daisy Lap Quilt

Begin with the stems.

If necessary, take a pin and gently score the paper backing of the HeatnBond.

This will reveal the adhesive underneath.

Peel away the backing paper.

Position the stem onto the quilt.

Use a pin or Wonder Clip to hold it temporarily if needed.

Once you are happy with the position, take it to the ironing board and press according to the HeatnBond instructions.

Add the Leaves and Daisies

Continue adding the leaves, daisy petals and centres.

Work slowly and check your placement before pressing each piece.

Once all the applique has been pressed into position, you are ready to make the quilt sandwich.

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Adding the Batting and Backing

Now it is time to prepare the three layers of the quilt.

Step 11: Make the Quilt Sandwich

Place your backing fabric face down on your work surface.

Place the batting on top.

Finally, place your completed quilt top on top of the batting.

Make sure that the backing and batting extend approximately two inches beyond the quilt top on all sides.

This extra fabric gives you room for quilting.

Secure the Layers

Use quilter’s safety pins to secure the three layers together.

Work carefully so that the quilt top remains smooth.

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Straight-Line Quilting

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Straight-Line Quilting

You don’t need complicated quilting to create a beautiful finish.

For this quilt, I am using a series of simple straight lines.

Step 12: Quilt Straight Lines – How to Applique – Daisy Lap Quilt

Place your quilting foot onto your sewing machine.

Follow the seams of the jelly roll strips and sew straight lines down the quilt.

Continue across the quilt until the main quilting is complete.

Don’t Stress About Quilting

If you’re not confident with quilting, don’t worry.

Straight-line quilting is a wonderful option for beginners.

It doesn’t have to be complicated to look beautiful.

Simple quilting can actually allow the applique and piecing to remain the main focus of the quilt.

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Free-Motion Quilting

Now we can add extra quilting around the floral applique.

Step 13: Free-Motion Quilt the Daisy

Attach your free-motion quilting foot to your sewing machine.

Drop the feed dogs.

Using your chosen thread, stitch around the daisy, stem and leaves.

The free-motion stitching adds texture and definition to the applique.

You don’t need to worry about every stitch being absolutely perfect.

The handmade character is part of what makes a quilt special.

Step 14: Echo Quilt Around the Motif

Echo Quilt Around the Motif

Next, attach your echo foot.

Keep the feed dogs lowered.

Stitch around the floral motif, following the outline of the daisies, leaves and stems.

This creates an echo around the applique.

Create Definition Around the Daisies

The echo quilting gives the floral design extra definition.

It also adds additional texture to the quilt without requiring complicated free-motion designs.

Once the echo quilting is finished, you can move on to the binding.

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Preparing the Binding

Binding gives the quilt a neat and professional finished edge.

Step 15: Join Your Binding Strips – How to Applique – Daisy Lap Quilt

When joining two binding strips, place one strip horizontally and the other vertically, with the right sides together.

Find the corner of the strip underneath and the corresponding corner of the strip on top.

Draw a diagonal line between the corners.

Take the binding to your sewing machine and sew along this diagonal line.

Trim the Binding Seam

Once you have sewn the diagonal seam, trim away the excess fabric.

Open the binding and press the seam.

Then fold the entire binding strip in half lengthwise and press it.

Leave approximately 9 to 10 inches of binding loose at the beginning.

This will give you enough room to join the ends at the end.

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Sewing on the Binding

Now we can attach the binding to the quilt.

Step 16: Sew the Binding Around the Quilt

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Sewing on the Binding

Begin sewing the binding to the edge of the quilt.

Sew all the way towards the first corner.

When you reach the corner, fold the binding upwards and then back down over itself.

This creates the mitred corner.

Continue sewing down the next side.

Repeat the process at each corner.

Continue Around the Quilt

Work your way around all four sides.

Take your time around the corners to make sure they remain neat.

When you get close to the starting point, leave a gap between the two binding ends.

For this quilt, I have left approximately 19 inches between the two ends.

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – Joining the Final Binding Ends

The final stage of binding is joining the two loose ends.

Step 17: Find the Centre – How to Applique – Daisy Lap Quilt

Fold the quilt slightly to find the centre of the gap.

Mark the centre using a Wonder Clip or pin.

This will help you position the binding ends accurately.

Measure the Binding

Because I am using 2½-inch binding, I am using the 2½-inch measurement on my binding tool.

Fold one end at the correct measurement.

Then take the other binding end and position it against the measurement.

Make sure you have enough room for the seam.

Step 18: Sew the Final Binding Seam

Open the binding ends so that the right sides are together.

Match the corners carefully.

You want the ends to form the correct diagonal joining line.

Use your ruler or binding tool to mark the diagonal line.

Clip the binding securely.

Take it to your sewing machine and sew directly along the diagonal line.

Trim the Excess

Remove the clips.

Trim away the excess fabric from the seam.

Open the binding and press the seam.

You should now have a continuous binding strip.

Sew the remaining section of binding into place.

Finally, fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and secure it.

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – The Finished Quilt

How to Applique : Daisy Lap Quilt – The Finished Quilt

And there you have it!

Your beautiful Daisy Lap Quilt is complete.

I am particularly proud of this project because it is the first quilt designed by Faodail Creation.

The combination of piecing, applique and quilting creates a lovely finished quilt that is full of colour and texture.

The daisy applique adds a beautiful focal point, while the simple straight-line quilting and echo quilting provide texture without overpowering the design.

Now let’s get started with the complete how to applique tutorial.

STEP 1: Get the FREE Acorn Applique Pattern – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

The first step is to get your FREE acorn applique pattern.

The pattern contains three pieces that you will need for the acorn:

  1. The main acorn
  2. The top section
  3. The stem

Once you have your pattern, check the cutting dimensions before beginning.

STEP 2: Trace the Acorn Pattern – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Trace the Acorn Pattern - How to Applique - FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Place your Steam-A-Seam underneath the first pattern piece.

You should be able to see the pattern through the paper.

You shouldn’t need a light box, but you can use one if you find it easier.

Carefully trace around the main acorn shape.

When you reach the top section, extend your tracing slightly beyond the edge.

This gives the pieces an area where they can overlap.

Important Applique Tip – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Don’t cut directly on the traced line yet.

Leave some extra Steam-A-Seam around the outside of each pattern piece.

This makes the pieces much easier to handle and gives you some room for adjustment.

STEP 3: Trace the Remaining Pattern Pieces – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Trace the Remaining Pattern Pieces - How to Applique - FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Repeat the same process for the other two pieces.

Trace the top of the acorn and then trace the stem.

Keep any leftover Steam-A-Seam scraps because small scraps can be useful for smaller applique pieces.

You should now have three traced pattern pieces.

STEP 4: Prepare Your Fabric – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Before applying the fusible adhesive, check your fabric.

If it has any creases, press it with your iron.

You want your fabric to be nice and flat.

Place each pattern piece onto the wrong side of the fabric.

Remember that the applique will ultimately be attached with the fabric’s right side facing upwards.

STEP 5: Attach the Steam-A-Seam – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Attach the Steam-A-Seam - How to Applique - FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Take your first traced piece.

Carefully peel back the adhesive backing.

Sometimes the adhesive can stay on the wrong side of the paper.

If this happens, gently pull it back and reposition it.

Place the adhesive onto the wrong side of your fabric.

Once it is correctly positioned, press it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Always follow the instructions supplied with your particular fusible adhesive.

Set the piece aside and allow it to cool.

STEP 6: Prepare the Acorn Top – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Take your second pattern piece.

Check the right and wrong sides of the fabric.

Remove the paper backing from the Steam-A-Seam.

Place the adhesive onto the wrong side of the fabric.

Press it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Allow the piece to cool before moving on.

STEP 7: Prepare the Acorn Stem – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Prepare the Acorn Stem - How to Applique - FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Now take the stem pattern piece.

Before permanently attaching it, place it over the acorn pieces to make sure the size and position are correct.

You may need to position the stem slightly on an angle.

Once you’re happy with it, remove the backing from the Steam-A-Seam.

Place the adhesive onto the wrong side of the stem fabric.

Press with your iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Allow it to cool.

STEP 8: Cut Out the Acorn Pieces – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once all three pieces have cooled, you can cut them out.

This time, cut carefully directly along the pattern line.

Take your time around curves and small sections.

You should now have three finished applique pieces:

  • Main acorn
  • Acorn top
  • Stem

Your pieces are now ready to attach to your background fabric.

STEP 9: Find the Centre of Your Background – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Find the Centre of Your Background - How to Applique - FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Before attaching your applique, find the centre of your background fabric.

If you’re making the wall hanging, your background fabric is 16 x 16 inches.

Use a friction pen to mark a temporary centre line.

This will help you position your acorn correctly.

If you’re working on a cushion, sweatshirt, apron or another project, use the same method to establish your desired placement.

STEP 10: Arrange Your Acorn Applique – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Place the main acorn piece onto your background fabric.

Add the top section.

Finally, position the stem.

Because Steam-A-Seam is a two-sided fusible adhesive, you can move the pieces around until you are happy with the arrangement.

This is your opportunity to adjust the design.

Stand back and look at it from a distance.

Make sure the acorn is centred or positioned exactly where you want it.

STEP 11: Fuse the Acorn to the Fabric – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Fuse the Acorn to the Fabric - How to Applique - FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once you are happy with the placement, apply heat.

Press the applique pieces according to the instructions for your fusible adhesive.

The heat will activate the adhesive and secure your applique to the background fabric.

Allow everything to cool before moving on to the sewing stage.

STEP 12: Baste the Quilt Sandwich – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

If you’re making the canvas wall hanging, place the 11 x 11-inch piece of quilter’s batting behind your background fabric.

Pin the layers together.

This will help prevent the fabric and batting from shifting while you are doing your free-motion quilting.

If you’re applying the applique directly to another sewing project, you may not need this step.

STEP 13: Set Up Your Sewing Machine – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Set Up Your Sewing Machine - How to Applique - FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Now it’s time to sew around your applique.

This is where you can combine how to applique with beginner-friendly free-motion quilting.

For my project, I used a Baby Lock Ellure 2.

Attach your free-motion quilting foot and lower the feed dogs.

I used brown embroidery thread on top and brown embroidery thread in the bobbin.

I also used a 90/14 Microtex needle.

Your machine may have slightly different settings, so always follow your sewing machine manufacturer’s instructions.

STEP 14: Free-Motion Quilt Around the Stem – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Start with the stem.

With the feed dogs lowered, you control the movement of the fabric yourself.

Slowly move around the outside of the stem.

Go around the stem approximately three times.

Don’t worry if your lines aren’t perfectly identical.

This is actually a fantastic way to practise free-motion quilting because you are simply following the edge of your applique.

Beginner Tip – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

If you find yourself struggling to move around a curve, stop sewing.

Lift your foot if necessary, reposition your project and continue.

You don’t have to sew the entire design without stopping.

STEP 15: Free-Motion Quilt Around the Acorn – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Free-Motion Quilt Around the Acorn - How to Applique - FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Now move to the top section of the acorn.

Follow the outside edge using the same free-motion technique.

Move slowly and concentrate on controlling the fabric.

Remember: when your feed dogs are lowered, you are the feed dogs.

Your hands control the direction of the fabric.

If you find it easier, you can also wear quilting gloves to give you additional grip.

STEP 16: Check Your Finished Applique – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once you’ve finished sewing around the acorn, trim away any loose threads.

Look over your stitching and make any adjustments you need.

Your acorn applique is now complete!

STEP 17: Attach the Applique to the Canvas – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Attach the Applique to the Canvas - How to Applique - FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

If you’re making the wall hanging shown in this tutorial, you can now attach your finished fabric to the 12 x 12-inch canvas.

Apply a small amount of suitable adhesive to the canvas.

This can help prevent the fabric and batting from shifting.

Place your fabric over the canvas and make sure your acorn is positioned correctly.

STEP 18: Staple the Fabric to the Canvas – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Fold the excess background fabric over the edge of the canvas.

Secure it with staples.

Start with one side.

Then move directly to the opposite side.

Pull the fabric gently so that it remains smooth, then fold it over and staple it into place.

Repeat this process with the remaining two sides.

STEP 19: Finish the Corners – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Finish the Corners - How to Applique - FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Fold the fabric neatly around each corner.

Trim away excess bulk if necessary.

Secure the corners firmly with your staples.

Take your time with this part because neat corners will give your finished wall hanging a much more professional appearance.

Why This Is a Great Applique Project for Beginners – How to Applique – FREE Acorn Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

If you’re nervous about trying applique, this project is a great place to begin.

There are only three applique pieces, and the free-motion quilting is simply following the outside edges.

You don’t need to create complicated free-motion designs.

You’re simply moving your fabric around the shape.

This makes it a fun and easy way to learn how to applique and practise free-motion quilting at the same time.

How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginnersis a wonderful way to bring the colours and feeling of fall into your sewing projects. In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to applique a beautiful autumn leaf design using fabric scraps, fusible adhesive and free-motion quilting.

This Autumn Leaf Applique project is perfect if you are new to applique because you don’t need to create a complicated design from scratch. You can download the free autumn leaf applique pattern from my Facebook group and use it to create your own beautiful fall project.

The great thing about applique is that you can put your design onto almost anything. You could use this Autumn Leaf Applique on a wall hanging, cushion, tote bag, apron, table runner, quilt or even a piece of clothing.

For my project, I decided to create a small autumn-themed wall hanging using a canvas that I had previously used. I’m also going to show you how I use free-motion quilting to stitch around the applique rather than using a traditional blanket stitch.

The slightly sketchy look created by free-motion stitching is one of my favourite ways to finish applique because it is quick, relaxed and doesn’t have to be perfect.

Autumn Leaf Applique Materials – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

How to Applique - FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Before starting your Autumn Leaf Applique, gather everything you need.

For the wall hanging shown in this tutorial, you will need:

  • Free autumn leaf applique pattern
  • Fabric scraps for the leaves
  • Fabric scraps for the stems
  • Double-sided fusible adhesive such as Steam-A-Seam
  • Pencil
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine
  • Free-motion quilting foot
  • 90/14 Microtex sewing needle
  • Thread in your chosen colour
  • 11 x 11 inch piece of quilt batting
  • 12 x 12 inch canvas
  • 16 x 6 inch backing fabric
  • Friction pen
  • Pins or temporary spray adhesive

You don’t need to make the exact wall hanging that I am making.

The Autumn Leaf Applique design can easily be adapted to suit whatever project you have in mind.

Step 1: Download and Trace the Autumn Leaf Applique Pattern – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Download and Trace the Autumn Leaf Applique Pattern - How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

The first step is to download the free Autumn Leaf Applique pattern from my Facebook group.

FACEBOOK GROUP – https://www.facebook.com/groups/405258636506758

Once you have downloaded and printed the pattern, look at the measurements provided on the pattern for cutting one leaf.

For my project, I am making two leaves, but you can make as many as you like.

If you want to make one leaf, make one.

If you want three leaves, make three.

This is one of the things I love about Autumn Leaf Applique because you can change the design to suit your project.

Trace the Leaf Design – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Trace the Leaf Design - How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Place your fusible adhesive over the leaf pattern.

Use a pencil to carefully trace around the leaf.

You do not need a light box for this.

If you have difficulty seeing the pattern through your adhesive, you can place it against a window so that the natural light helps you see the lines.

Of course, if you already have a light box, you can use one.

Don’t worry about making your tracing absolutely perfect.

A little bit of imperfection is completely fine with this Autumn Leaf Applique technique.

The free-motion stitching later will add to the relaxed, handmade appearance.

Important: Don’t cut directly on the traced lines at this stage.

Leave some excess material around the outside of the design.

This extra fabric will make the applique much easier to handle.

Trace the Stems

You will also need to trace the stems for your Autumn Leaf Applique design.

For my project, I am making two stems because I am using two leaves.

When tracing the stems, make sure they extend beyond the area where the leaf will sit.

The stem needs to go underneath the leaf.

Having extra length means you can position the stem underneath the leaf without worrying about having a gap.

Step 2: Prepare the Fabric and Fusible Adhesive – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Prepare the Fabric and Fusible Adhesive - How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Now it is time to prepare the fabric for your Autumn Leaf Applique.

Choose the fabric scraps you want to use for your leaves.

This is a fantastic scrap-busting project because you don’t need large pieces of fabric.

If your fabric is creased, give it a quick press with your iron before continuing.

Position the Adhesive

Place the traced leaf onto the reverse side of your chosen fabric.

The adhesive should be positioned against the wrong side of the fabric.

Before applying any heat, check that your fabric is large enough to accommodate the entire traced design.

Remember that you have deliberately left excess fabric around the tracing.

If your piece is too small, choose another scrap rather than trying to make the design fit.

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell which side of the fusible adhesive contains the glue.

If you accidentally have the adhesive on the wrong side, gently check the paper and adhesive.

You want the glue to be facing the fabric.

Once everything is positioned correctly, press it with your iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Always follow the temperature and pressing time recommended for the particular fusible adhesive you are using.

After pressing, allow the adhesive to cool.

This gives the glue time to properly bond to the fabric.

Prepare the Stem – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Repeat the same process with your stem.

Place the fusible adhesive onto the reverse side of your stem fabric.

Press it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

If you are making more than one leaf, prepare all of your pieces at this stage.

For my Autumn Leaf Applique, I prepared two leaves and two stems.

Step 3: Cut Out the Autumn Leaf Applique Pieces – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Cut Out the Autumn Leaf Applique Pieces - How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once your fabric and adhesive have completely cooled, it is time to cut out your Autumn Leaf Applique pieces.

Now you can carefully follow the pencil lines you traced earlier.

Cut around the leaf.

Take your time around the curves and points.

The great thing about applique is that you don’t have to worry about achieving absolute perfection.

The stitching will add character to the finished design.

Adjust Your Leaf Shape – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Before moving on, look at your leaves.

If you think the stem is too thick, make it thinner.

If you want a slightly different leaf shape, you can make small adjustments.

Your Autumn Leaf Applique should reflect your own style.

There is no requirement for every leaf to look exactly the same.

You can even experiment with different colours.

Traditional autumn colours such as orange, rust, brown, mustard and red look beautiful, but you could also create green leaves, purple leaves or use completely unexpected colours.

Step 4: Position Your Autumn Leaf Applique Design – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Position Your Autumn Leaf Applique Design - How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Before permanently attaching your Autumn Leaf Applique, take a moment to decide where you want everything to go.

If you are making a wall hanging like mine, prepare your background fabric.

For this project, I am using an 11 x 11 inch piece of quilt batting, a 12 x 12 inch canvas and a 16 x 6 inch piece of backing fabric.

You can change these measurements if you are making a different project.

Find the Centre – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

To help position the design, find the centre of your background.

Fold the fabric over and press it firmly.

Then fold it over again and press once more.

This gives you a centre reference point.

I like to use a friction pen to mark the centre.

Once you know where the centre is, start positioning your stems and leaves.

Place the stems down first because the leaves will sit over the top of them.

Create Your Design – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Arrange your Autumn Leaf Applique pieces until you are happy with the design.

Don’t immediately press everything into place.

Move the leaves around.

Try different angles.

Change the distance between the leaves.

You might find that a slightly different arrangement looks much better.

Remember, this is your project.

You can make one leaf, two leaves or several leaves.

You could even create an entire collection of autumn leaves across a quilt.

Step 5: Fuse the Autumn Leaf Applique to the Fabric – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once you are happy with the arrangement, remove the backing paper from the fusible adhesive.

Carefully place your Autumn Leaf Applique pieces onto the background.

Take your time.

Once the leaves and stems are positioned correctly, apply heat with your iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The heat activates the adhesive and permanently bonds the applique to the fabric.

Make sure you have all of your pieces exactly where you want them before pressing.

After the applique has been fused, allow the project to cool before moving it over to your sewing machine.

Step 6: Prepare Your Sewing Machine for Free-Motion Applique

Prepare Your Sewing Machine for Free-Motion Applique

For my Autumn Leaf Applique, I am using a Baby Lock Altair 2 sewing and embroidery machine.

However, you don’t need this particular machine to make the project.

The technique can be adapted to many sewing machines that allow you to do free-motion quilting.

I am using a free-motion quilting foot because I love the sketchy appearance it creates around the applique.

Lower the Feed Dogs

Set your sewing machine up for free-motion quilting.

You will need to lower the feed dogs.

On my machine, I can do this at the touch of a button, which makes the process very convenient.

Your machine may have a different method, so check your sewing machine manual if you are unsure how to lower the feed dogs.

Once the feed dogs are lowered, you become responsible for moving the fabric.

This can feel strange the first time you try it, but don’t worry.

You will quickly become more comfortable.

Choose Your Thread – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

For the leaves, I like using a dusky orange thread.

You could also use:

  • Dark orange
  • Rust
  • Brown
  • Black
  • Green
  • Gold
  • A contrasting colour

There are no rules.

If you want your stitching to stand out, choose a contrasting thread.

If you want a softer appearance, choose a thread that blends with your fabric.

Step 7: Add the Free-Motion Stitching – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Add the Free-Motion Stitching - How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Before starting the free-motion stitching, place the 11 x 11 inch piece of quilt batting behind your project.

The batting provides additional stability and gives your wall hanging some body.

I recommend pinning or temporarily spray-basting the batting to the back of your project.

Now you are ready to begin your Autumn Leaf Applique stitching.

Start Slowly

If you have never tried free-motion quilting before, this is a great project to practise with.

You already have the leaf shape in front of you.

Instead of trying to draw your own design, simply follow the outline.

Begin moving around the outside of the leaf.

You can turn and rotate your project as you sew.

Remember that because the feed dogs are lowered, you are controlling the movement of the fabric.

Don’t worry if your stitching isn’t perfectly straight.

In fact, the imperfect lines are part of the charm.

Create the Sketchy Effect – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

One of my favourite things about this Autumn Leaf Applique technique is the sketchy appearance.

I like to go around the leaf approximately three times.

The lines don’t need to perfectly follow each other.

Let them move slightly.

You can even choose to stitch slightly inside the leaf or occasionally travel outside the edge.

This gives the project a relaxed, handmade appearance.

Step 8: Stitch the Leaf Veins – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Stitch the Leaf Veins - How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once the outside of the leaf has been stitched, add the veins.

Move towards the centre of the leaf and stitch the vein lines.

You can use the same thread colour or choose a contrasting colour.

Black thread can look particularly dramatic against autumn fabrics.

If you are using a very light thread, the stitching may be subtle.

That is perfectly fine.

If you want the veins to be more noticeable, simply choose a darker thread.

Repeat the process on each leaf.

Step 9: Stitch the Autumn Leaf Stems – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once the leaves are complete, move onto the stems.

Follow the length of each stem with your free-motion foot.

Again, there is no need for absolute perfection.

The relaxed stitching works beautifully with the natural appearance of an autumn leaf.

This is also why I love free-motion stitching for Autumn Leaf Applique.

It allows you to work quickly without worrying about creating a perfectly precise satin stitch or blanket stitch.

Step 10: Attach the Finished Project to the Canvas – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Attach the Finished Project to the Canvas - How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once your Autumn Leaf Applique has been stitched, you can turn it into a wall hanging.

For my project, I am using a 12 x 12 inch canvas.

I also have a piece of backing fabric that measures 16 x 6 inches.

I like to put a little glue onto the canvas to help keep the quilt batting in position while I attach the fabric.

Carefully position your fabric over the canvas.

Fold the raw edge over and bring the fabric around the canvas.

Then staple it securely into position.

Once the top has been attached, work on the bottom.

Continue folding and securing the fabric until the entire canvas is covered.

If you are unsure how to attach fabric to a canvas, I have a separate full tutorial showing this process in more detail.

Why I Love This Autumn Leaf Applique Project – How to Applique: FREE Autumn Leaf Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

I honestly thought this project was going to look very basic when I started.

But once the stitching was complete, I absolutely loved how it turned out.

The combination of the fabric, the applique and the free-motion stitching creates a lovely handmade autumn decoration.

The best part is that you don’t need expensive materials.

You can use fabric scraps you already have in your sewing room.

You can also change the size of the leaves and create an entirely different project.

How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners is a wonderful way to add a fun fall design to fabric, home décor, bags, aprons, quilts, and wall hangings. In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make a pumpkin applique design using fusible adhesive, fabric, and your sewing machine.

This project is especially fun for autumn and Halloween decorating, but you can easily adapt the pumpkin applique to whatever project you have in mind. You could add your design to a tote bag, apron, cushion cover, table runner, quilt, placemat, or even a piece of clothing.

For this project, I’m creating a How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners wall hanging on a 12-inch canvas. The finished design features three layered pumpkins, giving the applique a fun dimensional appearance.

The great thing about pumpkin applique is that you don’t need to make a wall hanging. Once you understand the technique, you can use the same process on almost any fabric project.

What You Need | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Before starting your pumpkin applique, gather all of your supplies. Having everything prepared makes the process much easier, especially because this design has several small pieces.

The free pattern for this pumpkin applique is available through my Facebook group. Join the group and visit the Files section to find the pattern.

Once you have printed the pattern, cut out the individual sections so you can begin preparing your applique.

Preparing the Pumpkin Applique Pattern

Preparing the Pumpkin Applique Pattern

The first step in creating your pumpkin applique is preparing the pattern pieces.

Because this design has several moving parts, I recommend organizing the pieces into separate piles. This will make the applique much easier to assemble later.

Number Your Pumpkin Applique Pieces | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

You can number every section if you find that helpful.

For example, you might label the pieces:

  • P1 – Pumpkin 1
  • P2 – Pumpkin 2
  • P3 – Pumpkin 3
  • E – Eyes
  • N – Nose
  • M – Mouth
  • Stem

Numbering your pumpkin applique pieces is particularly helpful when you are working with several similar shapes.

You don’t necessarily need a light box for this pattern. The shapes should be easy enough to see through the fusible adhesive.

Trace each section carefully.

For the stem, allow a little extra fabric at the bottom where it will tuck underneath the pumpkin. This small amount of overlap will help the layers of your pumpkin applique fit together neatly.

Organize Each Pumpkin Applique Layer | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Organize Each Pumpkin Applique Layer | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Finish tracing all the pieces for Pumpkin 1 before moving on to Pumpkin 2.

Then create a separate pile for Pumpkin 2 and another for Pumpkin 3.

Pay close attention to the areas where the pumpkins overlap. Pumpkin 2 needs to sit underneath Pumpkin 1, while Pumpkin 3 will also tuck underneath another section.

This overlap is important because it gives your pumpkin applique a layered appearance.

Step 1: Apply the Fusible Adhesive | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Apply the Fusible Adhesive | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Now it’s time to begin preparing the fabric for your pumpkin applique.

I prefer to use Steam-A-Seam because it has adhesive on both sides. It is particularly useful for applique because it allows you to position pieces before permanently pressing them.

Prepare the Fabric | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Press your fabric before applying the fusible adhesive.

You want the fabric to be smooth and free from wrinkles.

Place the adhesive against the wrong side of your fabric according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

If your piece of Steam-A-Seam is larger than the fabric you’re working with, trim the adhesive down so it is easier to manage.

Do not cut your fabric directly on the final pattern line yet.

Leave a little extra fabric around each pumpkin applique piece.

This extra fabric ensures that the fusible adhesive completely covers the area you need and also gives you room to trim the shape accurately later.

Transfer Each Pumpkin Applique Piece | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Transfer Each Pumpkin Applique Piece | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Peel away the paper backing from the fusible adhesive.

Sometimes the adhesive can remain on the wrong side of the backing instead of staying where you want it. If this happens, simply press the adhesive gently with your finger and encourage it onto the side of the fabric where it needs to be.

Place the adhesive onto the wrong side of your fabric.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for heat and pressing time.

Repeat this process for every section of your pumpkin applique.

Keep the three pumpkins separated into their individual piles so you don’t accidentally mix up the pieces.

Step 2: Cut Out the Pumpkin Applique Pieces | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once all of the fusible adhesive has been applied to your fabrics, you can begin cutting out the pumpkin applique shapes.

This is when you finally cut directly along the pattern lines.

Take your time around small details such as the eyes, nose, mouth, and stem.

Accurate cutting will make your finished pumpkin applique look much cleaner.

If you decided to include a nose, make sure you have that small piece ready as well.

Don’t worry if your pieces aren’t absolutely perfect. Small imperfections are often difficult to see once everything is assembled and stitched.

Step 3: Prepare the Background Fabric | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Prepare the Background Fabric | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

For my pumpkin applique wall hanging, I’m using a 16 x 16-inch piece of background fabric.

Press the fabric so that it is completely flat.

Now find the center of your background fabric.

The easiest way to do this is to fold the fabric in half and finger press the fold. Open it and then fold it in half in the opposite direction.

The intersection of those folds gives you the center.

Make a small marking at the center so you know where to position your pumpkin applique.

Step 4: Position the Pumpkin Applique | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Now comes one of the most enjoyable parts of the project: assembling your pumpkin applique.

Start with Pumpkin 2 because it will help establish the central position of the design.

Since the fusible adhesive has not yet been permanently heat set, you can move the pieces around.

Place the eyes, mouth, stem, and other details where they belong.

Then position Pumpkin 3 underneath the appropriate section of Pumpkin 2.

Finally, add Pumpkin 1.

Check Your Pumpkin Applique Before Pressing | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Check Your Pumpkin Applique Before Pressing | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Take your time at this stage.

Look at your entire pumpkin applique from different angles.

Is it centered?

Are the pumpkins overlapping correctly?

Are the eyes, nose, and mouth positioned correctly?

Do you like the overall arrangement?

Once you permanently press the fusible adhesive, moving the pieces will be much more difficult.

If you’re having trouble keeping all the pieces together while arranging the design, an applique silicone mat can be extremely helpful.

Place the pieces onto the silicone mat and cover them with a Teflon sheet before pressing.

The pieces can then be heat set together to create one larger pumpkin applique unit.

Step 5: Permanently Heat Set the Pumpkin Applique | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once you’re completely happy with the placement, cover your pumpkin applique with a Teflon pressing sheet.

Press according to the manufacturer’s instructions for your fusible adhesive.

Make sure every section has been properly heat set.

The goal is to create a secure bond between the layers of your pumpkin applique and the background fabric.

Allow the project to cool before moving it.

Your applique is now ready to stitch.

Step 6: Stitch Around the Pumpkin Applique | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

You can leave your pumpkin applique without stitching if you prefer.

However, stitching around the edges adds extra security and creates a beautiful decorative finish.

For this project, I’m using a Baby Lock Altair with an applique blanket stitch.

Test Your Pumpkin Applique Stitch | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Before stitching directly onto your finished project, test your chosen stitch on a scrap piece of fabric.

This is one of the most useful tips I can give you when working with pumpkin applique.

A stitch can look completely different on the machine screen compared with how it looks when stitched onto fabric.

Create a small stitch sample.

Test your blanket stitch, satin stitch, decorative stitches, and quilting stitches.

You can keep these samples in a notebook or scrapbook so you have a reference for future pumpkin applique projects.

Choose the Right Stitch for Pumpkin Applique | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Choose the Right Stitch for Pumpkin Applique | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

A blanket stitch is a classic choice for pumpkin applique because it secures the fabric edges while also adding a decorative finish.

You can adjust the stitch direction or mirror it on many sewing machines.

Use your machine’s pivot function if it has one.

When you reach the end of a section, use the reinforcing stitch to secure the stitching.

Step 7: Slow Down Your Sewing Machine

Slow Down Your Sewing Machine

One of the biggest lessons from this pumpkin applique project is to slow down.

When you’re stitching around curves and small shapes, sewing too quickly can cause the stitches to become uneven.

Take your time around the pumpkins.

Slow down especially around the stem, eyes, nose, and mouth.

If you make a mistake, don’t panic.

Everyone makes mistakes when sewing.

Fixing Mistakes in Pumpkin Applique

If you need to remove stitches from your pumpkin applique, use a seam ripper carefully.

When removing a blanket stitch, it can sometimes be easier to work from the back of the project.

Once the unwanted stitches are removed, gently rub away any loose threads.

The small rubber ball on some seam rippers can be useful for gently removing thread fuzz.

After removing the stitches, press the area with your iron.

This can help the fabric settle and close some of the tiny holes created by the stitching.

Then simply slow down and stitch the area again.

A mistake doesn’t mean the project is ruined. Taking your time will give you a much cleaner pumpkin applique finish.

Step 8: Add the Pumpkin Applique to a Canvas

Add the Pumpkin Applique to a Canvas

Once your stitching is complete, your pumpkin applique wall hanging is almost finished.

For my project, I’m attaching the finished fabric to a 12-inch canvas.

I like to use fabric glue to temporarily hold the fabric in position.

Apply enough glue to keep the fabric from shifting, but follow the instructions for whatever adhesive you are using.

Position your finished pumpkin applique so it is centered on the canvas.

Make sure you have plenty of extra fabric around all four sides.

A 16 x 16-inch background works well for a 12-inch canvas because it gives you enough fabric to wrap around the edges.

Wrap the Pumpkin Applique Fabric | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Turn the excess fabric around the edges of the canvas.

Fold the raw edges inward so they are hidden.

Then staple the fabric to the back of the canvas.

Start with the top.

Move to the bottom and then work on the remaining sides.

Keep the fabric pulled smooth as you staple.

Don’t pull so tightly that you distort the pumpkin applique design.

Step 9: Display Your Finished Pumpkin Applique | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Display Your Finished Pumpkin Applique | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Your pumpkin applique wall hanging is now complete!

I love projects like this because you can create seasonal home décor without having to purchase expensive wall art.

The same pumpkin applique technique can also be used for many other projects.

Try putting your pumpkin design on a tote bag, apron, cushion, quilt, table runner, placemat, or seasonal fabric banner.

You can even experiment with different fabrics to create completely different looks.

Pumpkin Applique Ideas for Your Next Project | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once you’ve mastered this pumpkin applique tutorial, there are lots of ways to experiment.

Try Different Fabrics

Use traditional orange fabrics for your pumpkins, or try unusual colors.

A black, cream, green, purple, or patterned pumpkin applique could create a completely different style.

You can also mix quilting cottons, batiks, prints, and textured fabrics.

Add More Decorative Stitches

Your sewing machine may have many stitches that work beautifully around pumpkin applique designs.

Test your decorative stitches on scraps first.

You may discover a stitch that looks even better than a traditional blanket stitch.

Make a Collection of Pumpkin Applique Projects | How to applique | FREE Pumpkins Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Don’t stop at one project!

Create several pumpkin applique wall hangings using different fabrics.

You could make a coordinated collection for a fall gallery wall.

The most important thing to remember when making pumpkin applique is to take your time.

Prepare and organize your pieces before you begin.

Press your fabric.

Keep your individual pumpkin layers separated.

Leave extra fabric around the pieces until you’re ready to make the final cuts.

Check the placement carefully before permanently pressing the design.

Test your sewing machine stitches on scrap fabric.

And most importantly, slow down when stitching.

If you make a mistake, don’t worry. Carefully remove the stitches, press the fabric, and try again.

With a little patience, you can create a beautiful pumpkin applique project that looks professionally finished.

Whether you’re making a wall hanging, tote bag, apron, quilt, or another sewing project, this technique gives you lots of opportunities to be creative.
