If you are looking for an appliquรฉ quilt tutorial that is easy to follow, this guide will walk you through the process from preparing your fabric to stitching your applique pieces.
Whether you want to learn how to applique by hand or use your sewing machine, this guide will help you get started.
At Faodail Creation, I love creating simple sewing projects that are fun to make and easy to personalize. How to applique is one of my favorite techniques because you can take a basic sewing project and turn it into something completely unique.
How to Applique for Beginners

If you have never tried applique before, the basic idea is simple.
Applique involves cutting shapes from fabric and attaching those fabric shapes to another piece of fabric. The shapes can be stitched around the edges using a sewing machine or by hand.
You can use applique to create flowers, pumpkins, animals, Christmas designs, seasonal decorations, names, letters and almost anything else you can imagine.
The best part is that you can use fabric scraps for many applique projects, making this a great way to use up those smaller pieces of fabric you have in your sewing room.
How to Applique: What You Will Need

Before learning how to applique, gather a few basic sewing supplies.
You will need:
- Fabric for your background
- Fabric for your applique pieces
- An applique pattern
- Fabric scissors
- Thread
- Sewing machine or hand-sewing needle
- Fusible web or fabric adhesive, depending on your method
- Iron
- Ironing surface
- Pencil or fabric marking pen
- Pins or clips
- Your favorite sewing machine
You don’t need an expensive sewing machine to learn how to applique. A basic sewing machine with a zigzag stitch can work beautifully, especially if you’re following an applique quilting tutorial for beginners.
If your machine has decorative stitches, satin stitches or other embroidery-style stitches, you can experiment with those too. These stitches can add a beautiful finished look to your applique and are a great way to personalize your quilting projects.
Applique Using a Free Applique Pattern

One of the easiest ways to learn how to applique is to start with a simple pattern.
I have created free applique patterns that you can use for your own sewing projects. These patterns are designed to make it easier to get started without having to draw your own shapes.
Join my Free Facebook Group where I have lots of FREE patterns for you to enjoy https://www.facebook.com/groups/405258636506758
Choose a design that you like and download the free pattern according to the instructions provided with the project.
Once you have your pattern, you can print it and prepare your fabric pieces.
How to Applique: Prepare Your Pattern
Before cutting your fabric, take a moment to look at your applique pattern.
If your design contains several pieces, it can help to label each piece. For example, you might have a pumpkin body, pumpkin stem and leaves.
This makes the process much easier when you start putting everything together.
If your applique design contains lettering or a shape that needs to face a particular direction, remember that some applique methods require the pattern to be reversed before transferring it to your fabric.
Always check the instructions for your particular pattern before cutting.
How to Applique: Choose Your Fabric
Choosing fabric is one of the most enjoyable parts of learning how to applique.
You can use quilting cotton, fabric scraps or coordinating fabrics from your stash.
For beginner projects, I recommend using cotton fabric because it is easy to cut, sew and press.
Think about contrast when choosing your fabrics. If your background fabric is light, a darker applique fabric will help your design stand out.
You can also use several different fabrics in one design to create more color and visual interest.
How to Applique Step by Step
Now let’s get into the actual process.
There are several different ways to applique, but one of the easiest methods for beginners is to use fusible web to hold the fabric pieces in place before stitching.
Step 1: Trace Your Applique Pattern Onto Steam-A-Seam

First need to trace your applique pattern onto Steam-A-Seam. This is an important step because the Steam-A-Seam will eventually be used to attach your applique pieces to the background fabric.
How to Trace Your Applique Pattern Onto Steam-A-Seam
The tracing technique is an important part of learning how to applique, so take your time with this step.
Place your applique pattern underneath the Steam-A-Seam if it is transparent enough to see the design through the material. If you cannot see the pattern clearly, use a light box or place it against a bright window to make the design easier to see.
Use a pencil or fine-tip pen to carefully trace around each applique shape. This simple tracing technique will help you create accurate applique pieces and make the rest of your project much easier.
Remember to check whether your applique pattern needs to be reversed before tracing. This is particularly important for letters, numbers, words and directional designs. Tracing the pattern correctly will ensure your finished applique faces the right direction when it is transferred onto the fabric.
If your pattern contains several pieces, trace each piece separately. You can also write a small label next to each piece on the paper backing, such as “leaf,” “stem” or “pumpkin,” to make assembling your applique easier later.
Once all of your pieces have been traced onto the Steam-A-Seam, carefully cut around the traced shapes, leaving a small amount of extra material around each piece. You can trim the fabric more precisely after the Steam-A-Seam has been fused to your fabric.
Take your time with this step. Accurate tracing will make the rest of your appliquรฉ quilt tutorial much easier and help you create clean, professional-looking applique pieces.
Cut Out Your Traced Steam-A-Seam Pieces
After you have finished tracing all of your applique pieces, cut around each shape but NOT along the lines! Keep the pieces together and organized so you know where each one belongs when you are ready to transfer them onto your fabric.
Your traced Steam-A-Seam pieces are now ready for the next step: applying them to your applique fabric.
Step 2: Add Fusible Web
If you are using fusible web, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for attaching it to your fabric.
Usually, one side of the fusible web is attached to the wrong side of the fabric using an iron.
Be sure to protect your ironing surface and follow the temperature recommendations for your particular fabric and fusible web.
Do not rush this step.
Getting the fusible web properly attached will help keep your applique pieces in place while you sew.
Step 3: Cut Out the Fabric Shapes
Once your fusible web has been attached, carefully cut around the applique pieces.
Try to make your cuts smooth and accurate.
Small details may require smaller scissors to make the cutting easier.
This is one of the reasons I recommend starting with a simple design when learning how to applique.
Step 4: Arrange Your Applique

Place your applique pieces onto the background fabric according to your pattern.
Don’t iron them down immediately.
First, make sure that all of the pieces are positioned correctly.
This is particularly important when your design has multiple pieces that overlap.
Take a moment to step back and look at the entire design.
If something doesn’t look right, now is the perfect time to move it.
Step 5: Fuse the Applique Pieces
Once you are happy with the placement, use your iron to fuse the applique pieces to the background fabric.
Follow the instructions that came with your fusible web.
Press rather than moving the iron back and forth aggressively.
Allow the fabric to cool before moving it.
The applique pieces should now be secured to the background fabric.
Step 6: Choose Your Stitch

Now it’s time to sew!
There are several stitches you can use when learning how to applique.
A zigzag stitch is a popular choice for beginners.
You can also use a satin stitch for a more polished appearance.
Some sewing machines have applique or decorative stitches that can be used around the edge of your design.
Experiment on a scrap piece of fabric first.
This allows you to adjust your stitch width and length before sewing on your actual project.
How to Applique With a Zigzag Stitch
A zigzag stitch is one of the simplest options.
Set your machine to a zigzag stitch and adjust the stitch width and length to suit your project.
Sew slowly around the edge of the applique.
Try to keep the needle consistently close to the edge of the fabric.
Take your time around curves and corners.
If you are new to how to applique, sewing slowly will give you much more control.
Step 7: Sew Around the Applique

Begin stitching around the outside edge of your applique piece.
You don’t need to rush.
Slow and steady sewing will usually produce a cleaner result than trying to sew quickly.
When you reach corners, you may need to stop with the needle down, lift the presser foot and turn your fabric.
This makes it easier to follow the shape.
Continue sewing until you have stitched completely around the applique.
How to Applique Around Curves
Curves can seem intimidating when learning how to applique, but they become much easier with practice.
When approaching a curve, slow your machine down.
Make small adjustments rather than trying to turn the fabric dramatically.
The more gradual the curve, the smoother your finished stitching will look.
How to Applique Without a Sewing Machine
You can also learn how to applique by hand.
Hand applique can be relaxing and portable, and it is a wonderful option if you enjoy traditional quilting techniques.
Depending on the project, you can use stitches such as a whip stitch, blanket stitch or other decorative hand stitches.
Hand applique takes longer than machine applique, but it can create beautiful results.
If you are just starting, choose a small project so you can practice without feeling overwhelmed.
How to Applique: Beginner Tips

Learning how to applique doesn’t have to be difficult.
Here are a few tips that can make your first project easier.
Start With a Simple Design
Don’t start with an extremely complicated applique pattern.
Choose a design with larger shapes and fewer pieces.
Once you become comfortable with the technique, you can move on to more detailed designs.
Practice on Scrap Fabric
Before starting your actual project, practice your stitch on scraps.
This lets you test your thread, stitch length and stitch width.
It’s also a great way to get comfortable controlling your sewing machine around curves.
Use Quality Thread
Good-quality thread can make a noticeable difference.
Choose a thread that complements your fabric and applique design.
You can use matching thread for a subtle finish or contrasting thread if you want the stitching to become part of the design.
Don’t Rush
One of my biggest tips when learning how to applique is to slow down.
Applique is not a race.
Taking your time around corners and curves will give you more control and help create a professional-looking finish.

Now for the fun part!
I have created a growing collection of free applique patterns that you can use for your sewing projects.
These free patterns are perfect if you want to practice how to applique without having to create your own designs from scratch.

Projects You Can Make

Once you know how to applique, there are so many projects you can decorate.
Try adding applique to:
- Quilts
- Pillow covers
- Tote bags
- Crossbody bags
- Pincushions
- Mug rugs
- Table runners
- Placemats
- Wall hangings
- Fabric baskets
- Aprons
- Christmas stockings
- Baby quilts
- Sewing room dรฉcor
You can even use applique to personalize handmade gifts.
Add someone’s initial, favorite animal, flower or another special design to make the project unique.
Personalize Your Sewing Projects

One of the biggest advantages of learning how to applique is that you can personalize almost anything.
For example, take a simple cushion cover and add an applique design to the front.
Suddenly, you have a completely different project.
You can also combine applique with quilting, embroidery, fabric painting and other sewing techniques.
This allows you to create projects that are truly your own.
How to Applique With Fabric Scraps
Applique is also an excellent scrap-busting technique.
Instead of throwing away small pieces of beautiful fabric, save them for future applique projects.
Small pieces can be perfect for leaves, flowers, hearts, stars and other decorative details.
Keep your scraps organized by color so you can easily find what you need when starting your next project.
How to Applique: Common Beginner Mistakes
When learning how to applique, you may make a few mistakes.
That’s completely normal.
One common problem is sewing too quickly.
Another is trying to turn the fabric too sharply around curves.
You may also find that your applique fabric moves if it hasn’t been properly fused or secured.
If something goes wrong, don’t worry.
Practice is part of learning.
The more applique projects you make, the more comfortable you will become with positioning your fabric and controlling your sewing machine.
