How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners starts with downloading the free fox applique pattern from my Facebook group. The group is free to join, and the pattern is free to download.

Print your pattern before you begin and make sure all of the individual fox pieces are visible. Having a clear, correctly printed pattern will make the rest of the applique process much easier.

Keep the printed pattern nearby because you will use it throughout How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners to trace and position your applique pieces.

How to Applique | Trace the Fox Pattern Pieces

Step 3: Trace the Main Fox Pattern – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Trace the Main Fox Pattern - How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Place your fusible adhesive over the fox pattern and begin tracing the main section of the fox.

Trace carefully around the outline.

If you are having difficulty seeing the pattern through the fusible adhesive, place the pattern against a window so the light shines through it.

You can also use a light box if you have one.

Don’t worry if you aren’t able to trace every detail perfectly. The important thing is to capture the individual shapes accurately.

Step 4: Leave Extra Space Around the Main Pattern – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

When tracing the main fox shape, don’t cut directly on the traced line.

Leave a small amount of extra space around the outside of the pattern.

This is especially important around areas where another applique piece will overlap the main fox.

For example, the muzzle needs to sit underneath part of the main fox shape, so leaving a little extra room will allow the pieces to overlap correctly.

Step 5: Trace the Remaining Fox Pieces

Continue tracing the remaining sections of the fox.

Trace the muzzle, ears, eyes, nose and any other individual pieces included in the pattern.

For the smaller pieces, you can trace closer to the actual outline because you don’t need as much extra space.

Once you have finished, check that you have traced every piece before moving on.

How to Applique | Prepare the Fabric

Step 6: Press Your Fabric – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Before applying the fusible adhesive, check your fabrics for creases.

If your fabric is wrinkled, press it with your iron until it is smooth.

Starting with flat fabric will make the rest of the how to applique process much easier.

Step 7: Choose and Audition Your Fabrics

Choose and Audition Your Fabrics

Lay your fabrics out together before attaching the adhesive.

Move the different colours around and decide which fabrics you want to use for each section of the fox.

This is what I like to call auditioning your fabric.

It gives you the opportunity to see how everything looks together before you commit to your choices.

How to Applique | Apply Fusible Adhesive

Step 8: Check the Adhesive Side – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

I use Steam-A-Seam for my applique projects.

It is a two-sided fusible adhesive that helps hold the fabric pieces in place and can help minimize fraying around the applique edges.

Before applying it, check which side contains the adhesive.

Sometimes the glue can be on the opposite side from the one you expect.

If that happens, gently lift the adhesive with your thumb and move it to the correct side.

Step 9: Fuse the Pattern Pieces to Fabric

Place each traced pattern piece onto the wrong side of your chosen fabric.

Make sure the adhesive is positioned correctly.

Use a hot iron to fuse the adhesive to the fabric.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the particular fusible product you are using, including the recommended temperature and pressing time.

Once the piece has been fused, set it aside and allow it to cool completely.

Repeat this process for every fox applique piece.

How to Applique | Cut Out the Fox Pieces

Step 10: Cut Along the Pattern Lines – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Cut Along the Pattern Lines - How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once all of your fabric pieces have completely cooled, you can cut them out.

Use sharp fabric scissors and carefully cut directly along the traced lines.

Because you left extra space when initially tracing the main piece, you can now trim the fox accurately.

Continue until you have all of the individual fabric pieces ready.

You should now have everything you need to assemble your fox.

How to Applique | Prepare the Background Fabric

Step 11: Press Your Background Fabric

Take the fabric you are going to applique your fox onto.

For my wall hanging, I used a 16 x 16-inch piece of backing fabric.

Give the fabric a final press to make sure it is smooth before positioning your applique.

Step 12: Find the Centre of Your Fabric – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Fold your background fabric in half.

Then fold it in half again in the opposite direction.

Pinch the point where the folds meet to identify the centre of the fabric.

Use a friction pen to mark a small cross at the centre.

This gives you a reference point for positioning your fox.

How to Applique | Arrange the Fox Design

Step 13: Remove the Paper Backing

Take one of your fabric applique pieces and carefully remove the paper backing.

This will reveal another adhesive layer underneath.

Be careful not to distort the fabric as you remove the paper.

Step 14: Position the Main Fox Piece

Position the Main Fox Piece

Place the main fox piece onto your background fabric.

Use the centre mark you made earlier to help position the design.

Don’t press everything permanently into place yet.

At this stage, you can still lift and reposition the pieces if you aren’t happy with their placement.

Step 15: Add the Muzzle – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Place the muzzle onto the main fox section.

Make sure it sits underneath the appropriate part of the main fox shape.

Move it around until you are happy with how the pieces overlap.

Take your time with this section because the positioning of the muzzle can make a big difference to the finished face.

Step 16: Add the Ears, Eyes and Nose

Continue adding the remaining fox pieces.

Position the ears first, followed by the eyes and nose.

Look carefully at the entire design as you work.

If something doesn’t look quite right, simply lift the piece and reposition it before you permanently fuse the design.

Step 17: Check the Complete Design

Before reaching for your iron, stop and check the whole fox.

Make sure the ears, eyes, nose and muzzle are all where you want them.

Check that the overlapping pieces are positioned correctly.

This is your last opportunity to move the pieces easily.

Step 18: Press the Applique

Once you are happy with the arrangement, use your iron to fuse the fox pieces to the background fabric.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your fusible adhesive.

Press carefully and make sure the pieces are securely attached.

Allow the project to cool before moving on to the sewing stage.

How to Applique | Add Quilters Batting

Step 19: Position the Quilters Batting – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Position the Quilters Batting - How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Because I want to add free-motion quilting to my fox applique, I need some stabilization behind the fabric.

For my project, I use an 11 x 11-inch piece of quilters batting.

Place the batting behind the applique area.

The batting provides support and gives you a layer to quilt through.

If you are using your fox applique on a sweatshirt, apron or cushion, your stabilizing method may be different depending on the project.

How to Applique | Set Up Your Sewing Machine

Step 20: Thread Your Sewing Machine

For this tutorial, I am using my Baby Lock Altair.

I am using black embroidery thread in the top of the machine and in the bobbin.

The black thread creates a defined outline around the fox and helps the individual applique pieces stand out.

Thread your machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 21: Insert a 90/14 Needle – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Install a 90/14 sewing needle into your sewing machine.

Make sure the needle is properly inserted and securely tightened before you begin sewing.

If your machine or fabric requires a different needle, follow the recommendations for your particular setup.

Step 22: Attach the Free-Motion Quilting Foot

Attach the Free-Motion Quilting Foot

Attach your free-motion quilting foot to the sewing machine.

You will also need to lower the feed dogs.

On my Baby Lock, I can lower the feed dogs using a button, which makes this particularly easy.

If you are using another machine, check your manual to find out how your feed dogs are lowered.

How to Applique | Stitch Around the Fox

Step 23: Start Stitching the Main Outline – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Begin stitching around the main outline of the fox.

Guide the fabric smoothly underneath the needle while following the edge of the applique.

You don’t have to be perfect.

The stitching is handmade, and small variations are completely fine.

Step 24: Stitch Around the Fox Face

How to Applique

Once the main section of the face is complete, continue around the muzzle.

Then move to the nose and other sections of the face.

Work on one section at a time rather than trying to complete the whole fox in one continuous line.

Step 25: Stitch the Ears and Eyes

Continue by stitching around the ears and eyes.

I like to go around the applique outlines at least three times.

Repeating the stitching gives the design a stronger outline and helps define the different pieces.

Step 26: Don’t Worry About Perfect Stitching – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Don't Worry About Perfect Stitching - How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

If this is your first time doing free-motion quilting, don’t put pressure on yourself to make every stitch perfect.

Keep your hands moving steadily and concentrate on following the outline.

If you are nervous, practise first on a scrap piece of fabric with batting.

The more you practise, the more comfortable you will become.

How to Applique | Turn Your Fox Into Wall Art

Step 27: Prepare the Canvas

For my finished project, I am using a 12 x 12-inch canvas frame.

Place your finished fox applique over the canvas and check that it is centred and positioned correctly.

Before securing it, look at the front of the project to make sure you are happy with the placement.

Step 28: Secure the Fabric With a Glue Stick – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Turn the project over so you can work on the back.

I like to use a glue stick to help hold the fabric and batting in place.

Apply a small amount where needed and press the fabric into position.

The glue helps prevent the layers from shifting while you staple the fabric to the canvas.

Step 29: Staple the First Side

Staple the First Side

Fold the excess fabric over the back of the canvas.

Use your staple gun to secure the fabric.

Pull the fabric gently so that it remains smooth without stretching it excessively.

Step 30: Staple the Opposite Side – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once one side is secure, move to the opposing side.

Pull the fabric gently and staple it into position.

Working on opposite sides helps maintain even tension across the front of your wall hanging.

Step 31: Finish the Remaining Sides

Continue folding and stapling the fabric around the back of the canvas.

Work between opposing sides rather than completely finishing one side at a time.

Once all four sides are secured, trim away any excess fabric if necessary.

How to Applique | Finish Your Fox Wall Hanging

Step 32: Check Your Finished Applique – How to Applique | FREE Fox Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Turn the canvas over and inspect your finished fox.

Check that the fabric is smooth and that the applique is securely attached.

Make any final adjustments to the back if necessary.

Your adorable fox wall hanging is now complete!
