This Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners is designed with several fabric pieces that are layered together to create the owl.
For my project, I am turning the finished applique into a 12 x 12-inch wall hanging.
The finished project includes:
- An owl applique
- Multiple layers of fabric
- Fusible web
- Free-motion quilting
- A fabric background
- Quilter’s batting
- A canvas frame
One of the things I like about this project is that you don’t need perfectly precise quilting stitches.
In fact, I think the slightly messy, sketchy look adds character to the finished owl!

I am using a Baby Lock sewing and embroidery machine for this project, but you don’t need the exact same machine.
The important thing is that your sewing machine allows you to lower the feed dogs for free-motion quilting.
Why I Prefer Steam-A-Seam – Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners
For this owl applique, I use Steam-A-Seam rather than HeatnBond.
Steam-A-Seam is a two-sided fusible product, which makes it particularly useful when creating applique pieces.
It also comes in sheets, which means you can run the sheets through a printer if you want to print your applique pattern directly onto them.
It is also available on rolls.
For this particular project, I am drawing the owl pieces onto the Steam-A-Seam rather than printing them.
Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Step-by-Step Tutorial
Now let’s get started!
The following ten steps take you from the free pattern all the way through to the finished quilted owl wall hanging.
Step 1: Download the Free Owl Applique Pattern
The first step in this Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners is to get your free pattern. https://www.facebook.com/groups/405258636506758
The owl applique pattern is available in the Files section of my Faodail Creation Sewing, Quilting & Embroidery Group on Facebook.
The group is free to join.
Once you have downloaded the pattern, print it or use it as your template for tracing the individual applique pieces.
Before starting, look carefully at the pattern.
This is important because some pieces will sit behind other pieces.
Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Understanding the Layers
Applique is essentially a layering process.
You need to know which fabric pieces will be placed first and which pieces will go on top.
For example, the owl’s eyes and beak overlap other parts of the design.
Taking a few minutes to study the pattern before cutting your fabric can save you from having to rearrange pieces later.
Step 2: Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Trace the Owl Applique Pieces
Take your Steam-A-Seam and begin tracing the individual pieces of the owl.
Steam-A-Seam has a gridded side and a plain side.
For this project, I use the plain side for drawing.
You don’t have to trace every line perfectly.
The important thing is to follow the basic shape of each piece.
Once you’ve traced a piece, cut around it—but don’t cut directly on your drawn line yet.
Instead, leave approximately ¼ inch around the outside.
This makes handling the pieces much easier.
Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Keep Track of Your Pieces
If your applique pattern has several pieces, it can be surprisingly easy to forget which pieces you’ve already traced.
One simple trick is to put a small check mark beside each completed piece on your pattern.
This is especially helpful when you’re working with a design containing lots of small parts.
Step 3: Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Think About Which Pieces Go in Front
Before cutting everything out, look at how the owl is assembled.
Think about what is underneath and what needs to sit on top.
For example, the beak needs to be positioned correctly in relation to the eyes.
The feet are also designed as one larger piece rather than individual toes.
That’s intentional.
Once the applique has been attached, you can use free-motion quilting to define the legs and feet.
This is one of the fun parts of the Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners because you don’t need every detail to be cut separately.
The quilting can add those details later.
Step 4: Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Fuse the Steam-A-Seam to Your Fabric
Once all of your applique pieces have been traced, place them onto the appropriate fabrics.
Pay close attention to which side contains the adhesive.
This is important because the adhesive can sometimes be on the opposite side from where you expect it to be.
If you are using the blank side to draw your pattern, check where the glue is before removing the backing.
You don’t want to accidentally remove the wrong layer.
Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – A Helpful Steam-A-Seam Tip
If the adhesive is on the wrong side, carefully press the piece onto your thumb and transfer it to the other side.
Then check that the adhesive is positioned correctly before attaching it to the fabric.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular fusible product when applying heat.
Once the pieces have been fused, allow them to cool.
This gives the adhesive time to properly adhere to the fabric.
Step 5: Cut Out the Owl Applique Pieces
Once the Steam-A-Seam has been attached to the fabrics and cooled, it’s time to cut out the individual owl applique pieces.
This is where you can finally cut directly along your traced lines.
Take your scissors and carefully cut around each piece.
Try to keep your cuts smooth, but don’t worry if they aren’t absolutely perfect.
Remember that this is a fabric applique project.
Small imperfections can disappear once everything is assembled and stitched.
When you’ve finished cutting, you should have all the individual fabric pieces ready to assemble.
Step 6: Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Prepare the Background Fabric
Now it’s time to prepare the background.
For my wall hanging, I’m using a piece of fabric larger than the finished 12 x 12-inch canvas.
My background fabric is 16 x 16 inches.
If you want to find the exact center of your fabric, fold it in half and lightly press the center.
Then fold it in half in the opposite direction and press again.
When you open the fabric, you’ll have a small cross marking the center.
You can use this as a guide for positioning your owl.
Why Centering Helps
Finding the center before attaching the applique makes it much easier to create a balanced wall hanging.
You can still adjust the owl’s position before pressing the pieces permanently into place.
Step 7: Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners Arrange and Fuse the Owl
Now begin assembling your owl applique.
Start with the main body.
Remove the backing from the fusible piece and position the owl body on the background fabric.
Next, begin adding the remaining applique pieces.
Add the eyes, beak, wings, feet and other details according to the pattern.
Remember to check your layers as you work.
Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Check the Wings
Because the pattern has not been reversed, the wings will be positioned on the opposite side from the original drawing when you transfer them.
This isn’t a problem, but it is something to be aware of.
You can use a ruler to check that the wings are positioned evenly and run parallel to each other.
Take your time here.
Don’t press everything permanently until you’re happy with the arrangement.
Step 8: Add the Batting and Secure the Applique
Before moving to the sewing machine, place your 11 x 11-inch quilter’s batting behind the background fabric.
The batting provides some stabilization and gives the finished wall hanging a little more body.
Double-check that everything is positioned correctly.
Although you may be able to remove and reposition some pieces, it’s much easier to fix an applique before you have completely fused and stitched everything.
Once you’re happy with the arrangement, press according to the manufacturer’s instructions for your fusible product.
The applique is now ready for stitching.
Step 9: Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Use Free-Motion Quilting to Add Detail
This is my favourite part of the project!
For my owl applique, I’m using:
- A Microtex 90/14 needle
- Black embroidery thread
- Black bobbin thread
- An open-toe foot
I’m also lowering the feed dogs on my sewing machine.
This allows me to move the fabric freely while doing free-motion quilting.
Try Thread Painting
For the wings, I use a technique I call thread painting.
Instead of trying to make one perfect line, I loosely sketch around the shape several times.
I usually go around the wing approximately three times.
The result is intentionally sketchy and artistic.
And here’s the great thing:
The messier it looks, the better I think it looks!
You don’t need to have perfect free-motion quilting skills to enjoy this technique.
Stitch the Owl’s Feet – Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners
I use the same approach to define the feet and legs.
Remember that we didn’t need to cut every individual toe and leg as a separate applique piece.
The quilting can create those details.
This is a great example of how stitching can become part of the artwork.
Don’t Pull the Fabric – Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners
When doing free-motion quilting, try to let your hands rest gently on the fabric.
Avoid tugging or pulling the material.
Move the fabric smoothly underneath the needle instead.
If you find that you naturally move more comfortably in one direction, simply turn the project.
There’s nothing wrong with pivoting your work so that you’re moving in the direction that feels most comfortable.
Step 10: Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Turn Your Owl Applique Into a Wall Hanging
Once you’ve finished stitching the owl, you can turn your project into a wall hanging.
For my project, I’m using a 12 x 12-inch canvas frame.
The background fabric is intentionally larger than the canvas so that it can be wrapped around the edges.
I have another detailed tutorial showing how to attach fabric to a canvas, so you can follow that process if you’re making the same wall hanging.
One nice thing about using these canvas frames is that they can be reused.
I’ve used some of mine several times, and the glue can be removed quite easily when I’m ready to create another wall hanging.
That makes them a useful option for seasonal sewing projects.
How to Use This Owl Applique Sewing Pattern on Other Projects
You don’t have to make a wall hanging with this Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners.
The applique can be used on many different sewing projects.
Cushion Cover
Add the owl to the front of a cushion cover for a fun fall decoration.
Apron
A small owl applique would make a cute addition to a fall sewing apron.
Tote Bag
Add the design to a plain fabric tote to give it a seasonal look.
Quilt
The owl could also become part of a larger quilt design.
Table Runner
Use several owl appliques to create a coordinated fall table runner.
The great thing about applique is that the same design can be adapted to many different projects.

If you’re new to applique, don’t worry about making everything perfect.
Here are some tips that can help.
Take Your Time With Pattern Placement
Before pressing your pieces, step back and look at the whole design.
It’s much easier to move something before it’s fused than afterward.
Keep Track of Your Pieces
If your pattern contains multiple pieces, mark each completed piece on your printed pattern.
This prevents confusion.
Check the Fusible Side
Always check which side contains the adhesive before attaching your Steam-A-Seam.
This simple check can prevent a frustrating mistake.
Don’t Aim for Perfect Free-Motion Quilting
Free-motion quilting can look beautiful when it’s slightly irregular.
For this owl, the sketchy thread-painted appearance is part of the design.
Practice on Scrap Fabric – Owl Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners
If you’re nervous about free-motion quilting, practice on a scrap sandwich of fabric and batting first.
Try moving the fabric slowly and then experiment with different speeds.
