How to Applique is a wonderful way to add colour, personality, and texture to your sewing projects. In this beginner-friendly tutorial, I’m going to show you How to Applique a fun pair of scissors using a FREE Scissors Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners.

The great thing about learning How to Applique is that you are not limited to one particular project. Once you know the basic technique, you can use your applique design on cushions, aprons, bags, wall hangings, quilts, table runners, sewing room decorations, and so much more.

For this tutorial, I’m demonstrating How to Applique the scissors design onto a fabric wall hanging. However, you can easily adapt the project to suit whatever you would like to make.

The free scissors applique pattern is available in the Files section of my Facebook group, so you can download the pattern and follow along with the tutorial.

If you are completely new to applique, don’t worry. I’ll take you through How to Applique step by step, including tracing the pattern, preparing the fabric, positioning the pieces, and stitching around the finished design.

How to Applique Using a FREE Scissors Applique Sewing Pattern

How to Applique - FREE Scissors Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners – Easy & Creative Tutorial

Before we begin How to Applique, gather everything you will need for the project.

Materials for How to Applique

You will need:

  • The FREE scissors applique pattern – https://www.facebook.com/groups/405258636506758
  • Fabric for your applique pieces
  • Fabric for your background project
  • Steam-A-Seam or HeatnBond
  • Sewing machine
  • Embroidery thread
  • Embroidery bobbin thread
  • 90/14 sewing machine needle
  • Iron
  • Pressing mat
  • Scissors
  • Friction pen or fabric marking pen
  • Light box, if required
  • Quilt batting, if making the canvas wall hanging
  • Canvas, if making the wall hanging
  • Fabric glue, such as Elmer’s glue

Steam-A-Seam is particularly useful when learning How to Applique because it gives you an adhesive layer that temporarily holds your applique pieces in position before you permanently stitch them.

HeatnBond can also be used if that is what you already have available.

How to Applique: Preparing Your Pattern

How to Applique: Preparing Your Pattern

The scissors design contains several individual pieces. There are six main applique sections, and numbering them makes the process much easier.

When you have several small applique pieces on your work surface, it can become surprisingly easy to mix them up.

Number Each Applique Piece

Number Each Applique Piece

Before you start How to Applique, number the pieces on your pattern.

For this scissors design, the pieces are numbered from one through six.

This simple step will save you time later when you are positioning the applique pieces onto your background fabric.

If you are making a different applique project, I recommend using the same method. Number every individual section before cutting anything.

Trace the Pattern Onto Steam-A-Seam

Steam-A-Seam has two sides. One side has a grid, while the other side is blank.

I personally prefer using the blank side when learning How to Applique, as I find it easier to see the pattern underneath.

Place your Steam-A-Seam over the pattern and trace each individual section.

You don’t necessarily need a light box for this.

If you don’t have one and are struggling to see the pattern, you can place the pattern against a bright window and trace it that way.

When tracing the scissors handles and blades, pay particular attention to where the pieces overlap.

You want some sections to extend underneath the adjoining pieces.

How to Applique Scissors With Overlapping Pieces

How to Applique Scissors With Overlapping Pieces

One of the most important parts of How to Applique this particular design is allowing some pieces to overlap.

For example, when tracing the handle, extend the traced section slightly beyond the area shown on the pattern.

This extra area will eventually sit underneath the scissor blade.

The same principle applies to the other pieces.

Why Do Applique Pieces Overlap?

Overlapping pieces make your finished applique look cleaner and more professional.

Rather than trying to make every edge meet perfectly, one section can tuck underneath another.

This is especially helpful for beginners learning How to Applique because it makes positioning much more forgiving.

Don’t worry if your traced lines aren’t perfectly straight.

You can straighten the pieces when you cut them out.

Preparing the Fabric for How to Applique

Once you have traced all six pieces, prepare your fabric.

I recommend starting with the smaller pieces first.

Place each piece of Steam-A-Seam onto the appropriate fabric.

At this stage of How to Applique, don’t cut directly on the traced line.

Instead, leave a small amount of extra fabric around each piece.

Leave an Extra Edge

Leaving an extra edge is important because you want the adhesive to cover the fabric.

If you cut directly on the line too early, you can make the process more difficult.

For now, simply make sure the Steam-A-Seam pieces fit comfortably within the fabric sections you are using.

How to Applique With Steam-A-Seam

How to Applique With Steam-A-Seam

Now it is time to attach the Steam-A-Seam to your fabric.

Start by removing the backing paper.

Occasionally, the adhesive can remain on the unexpected side.

Don’t panic if this happens.

There is a simple way to fix it.

If the adhesive is on the wrong side, press the glue temporarily onto a suitable surface, such as the foam or pressing surface, and then peel it back onto the side of the fabric where you need it.

Once the adhesive is on the correct side, remove the remaining backing.

Repeat this process for all of your applique pieces.

This is one of those little tricks that can make How to Applique much less frustrating when working with fusible adhesive.

Press the Applique Pieces

Once all the adhesive has been transferred correctly, use your iron to press each piece according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

This permanently adheres the fusible adhesive to the fabric.

Allow the pieces to cool before continuing.

The adhesive helps reduce fraying around the edges of the applique.

It won’t necessarily stop fraying completely, but it can make a significant difference.

How to Applique: Cutting the Pieces

How to Applique: Cutting the Pieces

Once your fabric and Steam-A-Seam have cooled, carefully cut out each individual piece.

Now you can follow the traced lines.

Take your time with this stage because neat cutting will make the finished How to Applique project look much better.

Cutting the Centre of the Scissors

The centre section of the scissors requires a small opening.

To create this opening, fold the fabric over slightly and make a small snip.

You can then use your scissors to carefully cut away the centre section.

Take care not to accidentally cut into the surrounding applique piece.

When finished, you should have all six individual scissors pieces ready to position.

How to Applique Onto Your Background Fabric

How to Applique Onto Your Background Fabric

Now we can start putting the scissors design together.

You can use the applique on practically anything.

For this demonstration, I am using a wall hanging, but you could use exactly the same How to Applique technique on:

  • Sewing room cushions
  • Aprons
  • Tote bags
  • Quilts
  • Table runners
  • Placemats
  • Fabric baskets
  • Pouches
  • Clothing
  • Wall hangings
  • Sewing room decorations

This is one of my favourite things about How to Applique. Once you understand the basic technique, you can take the same pattern and use it on completely different projects.

How to Applique: Find the Centre

Before positioning the design, find the centre of your background fabric.

Fold the fabric in half and finger press it.

Then fold it in half again in the opposite direction.

When you open it back up, you should have a cross marking the centre.

Use a friction pen to mark the centre point.

This gives you a useful reference point when positioning the scissors.

Position the Scissors Applique

Start positioning your pieces onto the fabric.

I recommend beginning with one of the blades because it gives you a good reference point for the rest of the design.

The Steam-A-Seam should be sticky enough to temporarily hold the pieces in position.

One advantage of using this type of adhesive is that you can carefully peel a piece away and reposition it if you aren’t happy with the placement.

Take your time.

Don’t press anything permanently until you are completely happy with the arrangement.

How to Applique a Reversed Design

It’s important to check whether your particular applique pattern needs to be reversed.

The scissors pattern used in this tutorial has not been reversed.

If you need the design facing the opposite direction, you can trace the reverse side of the pattern.

A light box makes this easy, but you can also use a bright window.

Simply place the pattern against the window and trace the reversed design.

This is a useful technique to remember when learning How to Applique, especially if you want your finished design to face a particular direction.

How to Applique: Permanently Press the Design

How to Applique: Permanently Press the Design

Once every piece is in exactly the right position, it’s time to permanently press the applique.

Make sure you are happy with everything first.

Once you press the adhesive, moving the pieces becomes much more difficult.

Press according to the instructions for your fusible adhesive.

Allow the project to cool before moving on to the sewing machine.

How to Applique With a Sewing Machine

The next stage of How to Applique is securing the fabric permanently with stitching.

For this project, I am using a Baby Lock Altair 2 sewing and embroidery machine.

I have embroidery thread in the top of the machine and embroidery thread in the bobbin.

I’m also using a 90/14 needle.

You don’t have to use exactly the same sewing machine to learn How to Applique.

Most sewing machines have stitches that can be used successfully around applique pieces.

Choose Your Applique Stitch

There are many different stitches you can use for How to Applique.

For the scissors blades, I am using an overcasting-style stitch.

You could also experiment with:

  • Zigzag stitches
  • Satin stitches
  • Blanket stitches
  • Overcasting stitches
  • Decorative stitches

Before stitching the actual project, make a sample.

This is one of the most important tips for How to Applique because different fabrics, threads, needles, and stitch settings can produce very different results.

Adjust the Stitch Settings

For the applique blade, position the stitch so the edge of the stitching sits neatly along the edge of the fabric.

I also recommend reducing both the stitch width and length if necessary.

Slow your machine speed down while you are getting used to stitching around the curves.

A slower speed gives you more control.

If your machine has a pivot function, use it.

The pivot function can automatically raise the presser foot when you stop, making it much easier to turn your project around corners and curves.

How to Applique the Scissors Handles

How to Applique the Scissors Handles

For the handles, I’m using a zigzag stitch.

You can absolutely choose a different stitch if you prefer.

In fact, experimenting is one of the most enjoyable parts of How to Applique.

Try different decorative stitches on scraps of fabric before deciding which one you like best.

You may discover that a stitch you hadn’t considered creates a beautiful finished edge.

How to Applique Onto a Canvas

Once your applique is finished, you can turn it into a wall hanging.

For this project, I’m using a canvas and quilt batting.

The batting gives the finished piece a little extra dimension and helps prevent the fabric from shifting.

I use fabric glue to attach the batting to the canvas.

Then decide which direction you want your scissors to face.

Place your finished applique fabric over the canvas and check that you have enough fabric around the edges to wrap around the back.

If you want to sell your finished canvas or give it as a gift, take your time with this stage.

A properly finished canvas will look much more professional.

Helpful Tips for How to Applique

Helpful Tips for How to Applique

Practice Before Starting Your Final Project

If this is your first attempt at How to Applique, practice on scraps of fabric first.

Test your adhesive, thread, needle, and stitch settings.

Keep Your Pattern Nearby

Don’t put the original pattern away too soon.

You may need it when positioning your pieces, particularly when several sections overlap.

Number Small Pieces

Numbering is one of the easiest ways to make How to Applique more straightforward.

It prevents you from accidentally placing a small piece in the wrong position.

Take Your Time

Applique doesn’t need to be rushed.

Careful cutting and accurate positioning will make a noticeable difference to your finished project.

How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners is an easy sewing project that is perfect for anyone who wants to learn basic applique techniques while creating something useful and fun.

In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make a cute seam ripper applique that can be added to a wall hanging, cushion cover, tote bag, crafting apron, or almost any other fabric project.

How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners is designed with beginners in mind, so you don’t need advanced sewing skills to create this project.

The applique pattern features three separate pieces that come together to create the shape of a seam ripper. You can use different fabrics for each section to create contrast, or keep everything coordinated for a more subtle design.

I’m also using a double-sided fusible adhesive to attach the applique pieces to the fabric before stitching them into place. This makes positioning the pieces much easier and helps prevent them from moving while you sew.

Before you begin, gather everything you need for your applique project.

You can adapt this project to suit whatever you want to make.

The applique technique remains essentially the same whether you are decorating a wall hanging, cushion, tote bag, apron, or another sewing project.

Step 1: Get the Free Seam Ripper Applique Pattern – How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Faodail Creation Facebook Group

The first thing you need is the seam ripper applique pattern.

The free pattern is available through my Facebook group in the Files section. Once you have joined the group, you can find the pattern there and print it for your project. https://www.facebook.com/groups/405258636506758

The pattern contains three sections:

  1. The main handle
  2. The metal section
  3. The small circular ball section

Before cutting your fabric, look carefully at the pattern because the applique needs to be reversed.

Why Does the Pattern Need to Be Reversed? How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

When you are working with fusible applique, you need to consider which way the finished design will face.

If your pattern has not already been reversed, you will need to flip it before transferring it to your fusible adhesive.

This is particularly important if your design has a specific direction.

If you want the straight edges of the seam ripper to look particularly neat, use a ruler to mark those straight lines on your pattern.

Then you can draw the curved sections by hand.

Step 2: Prepare the Applique Pattern Pieces How to Applique – Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Prepare the Applique Pattern Pieces How to Applique - Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Start with the main handle of the seam ripper.

Place your ruler along the straight edge and mark the line clearly.

Then draw the curved section of the handle.

Once you are happy with the shape, cut around the outside of the pattern.

Don’t cut directly on the final line at this stage.

Instead, leave a little extra space around the pattern.

You will trim accurately later after the fusible adhesive has been attached to the fabric.

Repeat this process with the metal part of the seam ripper.

Use your ruler to create the straight edge and then follow the curved sections of the pattern.

The small circular ball can also be made slightly larger at this stage.

Leaving a little extra fabric around the pattern gives you some room when positioning and trimming the applique.

Step 3: Transfer the Pattern to Fusible Adhesive How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Transfer the Pattern to Fusible Adhesive How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Now it is time to transfer your pattern pieces onto your double-sided fusible adhesive.

I like using Steam-A-Seam because it has adhesive on both sides, making it particularly useful for applique.

However, you can use another suitable fusible product, such as HeatnBond, if that is what you have available.

Place the pattern onto the appropriate side of the adhesive.

If you accidentally put the adhesive on the wrong side, don’t panic.

Simply reposition it before continuing.

For each section of the seam ripper, trace the shape onto the fusible adhesive.

Remember that the pieces need to be reversed so the finished applique will face the correct direction.

Leave Extra Space Around Each Piece How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

When initially cutting the fusible adhesive, don’t cut directly on the traced line.

Instead, cut around each shape, leaving a small amount of excess material.

This makes the pieces easier to handle and gives you some extra room when attaching them to your fabric.

Repeat this process for all three applique pieces.

Step 4: Attach the Fusible Adhesive to the Fabric How to Applique Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Attach the Fusible Adhesive to the Fabric How to Applique Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once your pattern pieces have been transferred, place each one onto the appropriate applique fabric.

Make sure the adhesive is positioned correctly.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular fusible product.

This is important because different products can require different pressing times and temperatures.

Place the pieces onto your fabric and apply heat according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Do not guess the pressing temperature or time.

Always check the instructions supplied with your fusible adhesive.

After pressing, allow the pieces to cool completely.

Cut Out the Applique Pieces

Once everything has cooled, you can carefully cut around each applique piece.

This time, cut directly on the traced line.

You should now have three neat fabric pieces ready to create your seam ripper applique.

These pieces are the handle, metal section, and circular ball.

Step 5: Prepare Your Project How to Applique | Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Prepare Your Project How to Applique | Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

One of the best things about this applique project is that you don’t have to use it on a wall hanging.

You could add the design to a:

  • Tote bag
  • Cushion cover
  • Sewing apron
  • Table runner
  • Sewing machine cover
  • Quilt
  • Wall hanging
  • Fabric storage project

The technique is the same regardless of the project.

For my project, I’m using a 12 x 12-inch canvas to create a sewing-themed wall hanging.

Before placing the applique, decide exactly where you want the design to go.

Step 6: Find the Centre of Your Fabric How to Applique – Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Find the Centre of Your Fabric How to Applique - Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

If you are making a wall hanging, finding the centre can make positioning your design much easier.

Fold your fabric in half and gently mark the centre.

Then fold it in the opposite direction and mark the centre again.

You now have a central reference point.

I like to use a friction pen for this because it makes temporary markings easy to create.

Think about the angle of your seam ripper before permanently attaching anything.

For this project, I like the seam ripper positioned diagonally.

However, you can place yours vertically, horizontally, or at any angle you prefer.

Position the Applique Pieces How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Remove the paper backing from the adhesive side of your first applique piece.

You should now have a sticky surface.

Place the main handle onto your fabric.

One advantage of using a fusible adhesive is that you can carefully reposition the piece before permanently pressing it.

Next, position the metal section of the seam ripper.

Finally, add the small circular ball.

Take your time during this stage.

Step back and look at the complete design before pressing it permanently.

Small adjustments at this point can make a big difference to the finished result.

Step 7: Add Batting to a Canvas Wall Hanging How to Applique – Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Add Batting to a Canvas Wall Hanging How to Applique - Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

If you are creating the same 12 x 12-inch canvas wall hanging, adding a layer of quilt batting can give the finished project a softer, fuller appearance.

Place the batting over your canvas.

I like to use a small amount of fabric glue to help keep the batting in place.

The batting also helps the fabric sit more smoothly over the canvas.

Make sure everything is positioned correctly before continuing.

Once you are happy with your seam ripper applique placement, apply heat according to the instructions for your fusible adhesive.

This will help secure the applique to the fabric.

Allow everything to cool before moving on to the stitching stage.

Step 8: Stitch Around the Applique How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Stitching around your applique is optional, but I recommend it if you want a decorative finished look.

You can use a straight stitch, zigzag stitch, satin stitch, blanket stitch, or decorative sewing machine stitch.

For my project, I’m using a decorative stitch on my Baby Lock Altair 2.

I selected a stitch that adds a little extra detail without overpowering the applique.

For the thread, I used embroidery thread in the top of the machine and the same colour in the bobbin.

I also used a 90/14 needle.

Sew Slowly Around the Curves How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

When stitching around an applique, don’t feel that you need to rush.

Reduce your sewing machine speed so you have plenty of control.

Start with your needle positioned carefully near the edge of the applique.

Then slowly guide the fabric around the curves and corners.

Slow, controlled movements will usually give you a much neater result than trying to sew quickly.

When you approach a corner, slow down even more.

Make small adjustments to the fabric rather than trying to force it around the corner.

Step 9: Stitch the Metal Section How to Applique – Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Stitch the Metal Section How to Applique - Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

For the metal section of the seam ripper, you can use another decorative stitch.

I chose to stitch down the centre of the metal portion.

This adds a simple detail that helps make the applique look more like a real seam ripper.

Once you reach the end, finish the section with a straight stitch.

Remember that your project doesn’t have to look exactly like mine.

This is your applique project, so experiment with different stitches, colours, and placements.

Step 10: Decide What to Do With the Circular Section

Decide What to Do With the Circular Section

The small circular section of the seam ripper is optional when it comes to stitching.

You can stitch around it, leave it without stitching, or use a decorative stitch.

There is no single correct way to finish this part.

Think about the overall appearance of your project and choose the option you like best.

If you are using this applique on a different project, such as a tote bag or cushion cover, you can experiment with different stitching techniques to suit the fabric.

Step 11: Finish the Wall Hanging How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

If you are making a 12 x 12-inch canvas wall hanging, the final step is attaching your fabric to the canvas.

Fold the fabric neatly around the edges of the canvas.

Then secure it to the back using staples.

Take your time with this step.

The way you finish the back of a wall hanging can make a big difference to the overall appearance of the finished project.

Keep the fabric smooth as you work around the edges.

Try to maintain an even amount of tension so the front remains neat and flat.

Fold the corners carefully and staple everything securely.

How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners How to Applique - Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

This project is a great introduction to fusible applique because it doesn’t require complicated piecing.

Once you understand how to prepare, fuse, position, and stitch the three sections, you can use exactly the same technique for countless other applique designs.

You could create sewing-themed applique designs featuring scissors, sewing machines, buttons, spools of thread, needles, or other favourite sewing tools.

The possibilities are almost endless.

How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

If you’re new to applique, remember that you don’t have to get everything perfect on your first attempt.

Take your time when cutting your pieces.

Pay attention to the direction of your pattern.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using your fusible adhesive.

And when you begin sewing, slow your machine down so you have plenty of control.

These simple steps can make applique much easier for beginners.

Tips for Successful Applique How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Here are a few additional tips to help you get the best results.

Use Contrasting Fabrics

Choosing fabrics with enough contrast can make your applique design much easier to see.

For example, a dark seam ripper on a light background will stand out clearly.

Don’t Skip the Cooling Stage How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Allow your fusible adhesive to cool completely before cutting or repositioning the applique pieces.

This gives the adhesive time to set properly.

Take Your Time Cutting

Accurate cutting is one of the most important parts of applique.

Use sharp fabric scissors and follow the traced lines carefully.

Sew Slowly

Decorative stitching around curves requires control.

Reducing your machine speed can make it much easier to follow the shape.

Experiment With Decorative Stitches How to Applique : Free Seam Ripper Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Don’t feel limited to the stitch I used.

Try different decorative stitches to create completely different finishes.

Trace each of the four sections onto the paper backing of your Steam-A-Seam.

As you trace, remember that:

  • The tomato stem extends slightly underneath the tomato.
  • The strawberry leaf also overlaps the berry.
  • These overlapping pieces help create a layered applique design.

After tracing all four pieces, do not cut directly on the lines just yet.

Instead, make a rough cut around each traced piece.

Take your time during this step, as accurately tracing the pattern will make assembling the applique much easier later in the project. You do not need to worry about making every line absolutely perfect because small variations will not affect the finished design.

Smooth, confident lines are more important than perfect precision. If your pattern shifts while tracing, simply reposition it before continuing. Double-check that all four pattern pieces have been traced before moving on to the next step.

Keeping each piece labeled can also help prevent confusion when it is time to assemble the tomato and strawberry. Once everything has been roughly cut out, you’ll be ready to fuse the Steam-A-Seam to your chosen fabrics and begin bringing your applique to life.

Step 3: Prepare the Fabric – How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Prepare the Fabric - How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Now it’s time to prepare your applique fabrics.

Steam-A-Seam has two sides:

  • A gridded side
  • A plain side

The adhesive generally sticks to the gridded side.

Carefully peel back one corner to check where the adhesive is before attaching it to your fabric.

Place each traced piece onto the wrong side of your chosen fabrics.

If you’re using printed fabric, always place the fusible web on the wrong side so the right side remains visible.

Step 4: Fuse the Pieces – How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, press each traced piece onto the fabric using your iron.

Allow every piece to cool completely before handling it.

Cooling helps the adhesive bond properly and makes the paper backing much easier to remove later.

Be sure to use the correct heat setting for the type of fabric you have chosen to avoid scorching or damaging the material. Press the iron firmly onto each piece instead of sliding it back and forth, as this helps keep the traced shapes from shifting.

Once the adhesive has bonded to the fabric, resist the temptation to peel away the paper backing immediately. Giving the pieces enough time to cool creates a stronger bond and makes the backing paper much easier to remove in one piece.

Before moving on, check that every section is securely fused to the fabric. If any edges have lifted, simply press them again for a few more seconds. Taking a little extra time during this step will make cutting and assembling your applique much easier and help create crisp, clean edges in the finished project.

Step 5: Cut Out Each Applique Piece – How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Cut Out Each Applique Piece - How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once everything has cooled, carefully cut directly on the traced lines.

Take your time around the curved edges of the tomato and strawberry to achieve smooth shapes.

After cutting, you’ll have all four applique pieces ready to assemble.

Step 6: Find the Center of Your Background Fabric – How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Find the Center of Your Background Fabric - How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Fold your background fabric in half.

Then fold it in half again.

Lightly press the folded corner with your iron.

When you unfold the fabric, the crease marks will show you exactly where the center is.

This makes positioning your applique much easier.

Finding the center of your background fabric before placing the applique helps ensure your finished project looks balanced and professional.

The crease lines act as an easy guide, allowing you to position the tomato and strawberry design without having to measure repeatedly. If you are creating a wall hanging, cushion, tote bag, or apron, taking a few extra moments to locate the center will help prevent the applique from appearing too high, too low, or off to one side.

Once you have identified the center, place your applique pieces on the fabric without removing the paper backing first. This gives you the opportunity to experiment with the layout and make any adjustments before permanently fusing the pieces in place.

If your project includes additional embellishments, borders, or quilting, remember to leave enough space around the edges for those details.

Taking your time during this planning stage will help you achieve a well-proportioned design that complements your finished sewing project and gives it a polished, professional appearance.

Step 7: Arrange the Tomato Pincushion Design – How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Arrange the Tomato Pincushion Design - How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Peel the paper backing from each applique piece.

Arrange the pieces on your background fabric.

Start with:

  • Tomato
  • Leaves
  • Strawberry
  • Stem

One advantage of using Steam-A-Seam is that it remains slightly repositionable before permanently pressing it.

This allows you to lift, adjust, and reposition each piece until you’re happy with the layout.

If your design isn’t centered, simply move everything before ironing.

Step 8: Press the Design Into Place – How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Press the Design Into Place - How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Once you’re satisfied with the arrangement, press the entire applique using your iron.

Allow it to cool again before moving on.

Cooling prevents the pieces from shifting while adding the decorative stitching.

Step 9: Draw the Tomato Details – How to Applique: Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Using a friction pen, draw the curved sections of the tomato.

These stitched lines give the tomato a more realistic appearance.

Don’t worry if your lines aren’t identical.

Real tomatoes naturally have irregular curves.

If you make a mistake, simply erase the friction pen lines and redraw them.

Step 10: Set Up Your Sewing Machine – How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Set Up Your Sewing Machine - How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

This tutorial How to Applique: Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners uses the Baby Lock Altair 2 sewing and embroidery machine, but any sewing machine capable of a straight stitch will work.

For this project:

  • Select a straight stitch.
  • Increase the stitch length to approximately 3.0 mm.
  • Use embroidery thread if desired.
  • Set your machine to needle-down mode.
  • Reduce the sewing speed for better control.

If your sewing machine has a pivot function, use it to make turning around curves much easier.

Step 11: Stitch Around the Applique – How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Stitch Around the Applique - How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Begin stitching around the edge of the tomato.

Start with several forward stitches before reversing to lock the stitches in place.

Slowly stitch all the way around the tomato.

Continue around:

  • The leaves
  • The strawberry
  • The remaining green sections

Take your time.

There is no need to rush.

Slow stitching creates smoother curves and more even results.

Step 12: Finish Your Wall Hanging (Optional) – How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

Finish Your Wall Hanging (Optional) - How to Applique Free Tomato Pincushion Applique Sewing Pattern for Beginners

If you’re creating a wall hanging, mount the finished applique onto a canvas.

First, apply a generous amount of glue stick to the canvas.

Add a layer of quilt batting before placing the applique fabric over the top.

The batting gives the finished project a fuller, softer appearance.

Center the design carefully before folding the fabric around the back.

Staple the fabric securely to the back of the canvas.

Take your time wrapping the corners neatly for a professional finish.

  • Tote bags
  • Quilts
  • Cushions
  • Table runners
  • T-shirts
  • Sewing machine covers
  • Fabric baskets

Step 1 – Trace the Pattern

Measurements

The first step in How to Applique : Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners is tracing every pattern piece onto your fusible web.

You’ll notice there are three main pieces:

Mannequin Body – How to Applique – Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Carefully trace around the mannequin body.

Don’t worry about making every line perfect.

Pole – How to Applique – Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Use a ruler to keep the pole perfectly straight.

Allow the pole to overlap slightly beneath the mannequin body.

Base – How to Applique – Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Trace the curved base carefully.

This supports the finished mannequin design.

Once everything has been traced, leave the pieces uncut until after pressing.

Step 2 – Prepare the Fusible Web – How to Applique – Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Prepare the Fusible Web - How to Applique - Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

The next stage of How to Applique : Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners is attaching the fusible web. This step is essential because it allows you to temporarily bond the fabric pieces to the background fabric before stitching, making the appliqué process much easier and more accurate.

Place the adhesive side against the wrong side of each fabric. If you’re using Steamer Seam, you’ll find that it has a repositionable adhesive, making it simple to adjust your appliqué pieces before permanently pressing them into place. This feature is especially helpful for beginners who may need to reposition the pieces several times to achieve the perfect layout.

If the glue stays on the paper backing, simply transfer it to the correct side before ironing. This occasionally happens with some fusible products, so don’t worry if it does. Carefully peel the adhesive away from the backing paper and place it onto the wrong side of your fabric before continuing.

Follow the manufacturer’s pressing instructions carefully for the best bond. Different brands of fusible web may require different temperatures and pressing times, so always check the packaging first. Avoid sliding the iron back and forth, as this can cause the fabric or fusible web to shift. Instead, press the iron straight down, hold it for the recommended time, then lift and move to the next section.

Allow each piece to cool completely before handling it. Once cooled, the adhesive will have bonded securely to the fabric, making it much easier to cut out your appliqué pieces accurately and continue with How to Applique : Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners.

Step 3 – Cut Out the Appliqué Pieces – How to Applique – Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Once the fusible web has cooled, carefully cut each pattern piece along the traced lines.

Take your time to produce smooth curves.

Accurate cutting makes assembling the mannequin much easier.

You should now have:

  • Mannequin body
  • Pole
  • Stand

Step 4 – Prepare the Background Fabric – How to Applique – Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Prepare the Background Fabric - How to Applique - Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Before positioning your appliqué pieces, prepare your background fabric. Taking a few extra minutes to prepare the fabric properly will help ensure your finished project looks neat, professional, and well-balanced. This is an important step in How to Applique : Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners, especially if you are creating a wall hanging or quilt block where accurate placement is essential.

Fold the fabric in half.

Fold it again.

Lightly press the folds with an iron.

When unfolded, the crease marks identify the centre of the project.

Use a friction pen to mark the centre point if desired.

Finding the centre ensures your finished design is balanced.

Once you’ve marked the centre, lay your background fabric flat on your work surface and smooth out any wrinkles. A flat, well-pressed fabric makes it much easier to position the appliqué pieces accurately. If your fabric has become creased during storage, give it a quick press before continuing.

Before removing the paper backing from your appliqué pieces, place them on the fabric to test different layouts. This allows you to check the spacing and make sure the mannequin is centred exactly where you want it. Because the Steamer Seam adhesive is repositionable, you can easily make adjustments until you’re happy with the arrangement.

Taking the time to prepare and centre your background fabric will make the remaining steps of How to Applique : Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners much easier. Proper alignment helps create a polished finished project and ensures there’s enough space around the appliqué if you plan to add borders, quilting, embroidery, or decorative stitching later. Careful preparation at this stage sets the foundation for a beautiful appliqué design.

Step 5 – Assemble the Mannequin Appliqué – How to Applique – Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Assemble the Mannequin Appliqué - How to Applique - Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Now comes the fun part of How to Applique : Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners.

Remove the paper backing from the mannequin body.

Position it in the centre of the background fabric.

Next, remove the paper backing from the pole.

Slide the pole slightly underneath the mannequin body.

Finally, position the stand beneath the pole.

One of the biggest advantages of Steamer Seam is that it’s repositionable.

If something doesn’t look quite right, simply lift the piece and move it until you’re happy.

Once everything is perfectly aligned, press the entire design with your iron.

Step 6 – Stitch Around the Appliqué – How to Applique – Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Stitch Around the Appliqué - How to Applique - Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

The next step in How to Applique : Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners is securing the appliqué with decorative stitching. While the fusible web holds each fabric piece in place, stitching creates a permanent finish that helps prevent the edges from lifting over time. It also adds texture, character, and a professional touch to your project.

Although fusible web holds the fabric in place, stitching provides durability while adding decorative detail. The type of stitch you choose can completely change the look of your finished appliqué, so don’t be afraid to experiment and find the style you enjoy most.

There are many different stitches you can use, including:

Straight Stitch

Perfect for a clean, modern appearance. A straight stitch follows the edge of the appliqué closely and works well for contemporary projects. It’s also a quick and easy option for beginners who are still building confidence with appliqué.

Zigzag Stitch

One of the most popular appliqué stitches. A narrow zigzag stitch helps secure the raw edges of the fabric while adding a decorative finish. You can adjust the stitch width and length to create either a subtle or bold effect.

Blanket Stitch

Creates a traditional handmade finish. This decorative stitch is commonly used on quilts and heirloom sewing projects, giving the appliqué a classic look while firmly securing the edges.

Free-Motion Stitching

This tutorial demonstrates free-motion stitching, sometimes called thread sketching. By lowering your machine’s feed dogs, you can move the fabric freely in any direction to create unique stitched outlines and artistic details. Free-motion stitching is an excellent way to add personality to your project and is a great introduction to free-motion quilting techniques.

Whichever stitch you choose, practise on a scrap piece of fabric first. This allows you to adjust your machine settings, thread tension, and stitch length before sewing on your final project. As you become more comfortable with How to Applique : Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners, you’ll discover that combining different stitches can create beautiful textures and make every appliqué project uniquely your own.

Step 7 – Set Up Your Sewing Machine – How to Applique – Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Set Up Your Sewing Machine - How to Applique - Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

For this project the following machine setup was used:

Thread

Embroidery thread in both the top and bobbin.

Needle

90/14 needle.

Feed Dogs

Lower the feed dogs for free-motion stitching.

Sewing Mode

Switch from embroidery mode to sewing mode before beginning.

These settings allow smooth free-motion stitching around the mannequin.

Step 8 – Free-Motion Stitch Around the Design – How to Applique – Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Free-Motion Stitch Around the Design - How to Applique - Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

One of the most enjoyable parts of How to Applique : Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners is adding decorative stitching. This is where your appliqué really comes to life and begins to take on its own unique character. Free-motion stitching allows you to create organic, hand-drawn lines with your sewing machine, making every project one of a kind.

Begin by stitching up and down along the pole several times. This helps define the stand of the mannequin while reinforcing the appliqué in that area.

Next, switch thread colours if desired. Changing thread colours is a simple way to add contrast and highlight different sections of the mannequin. For example, you might use a darker thread for the stand and a brighter colour to outline the body, giving your finished project extra visual interest.

Continue stitching around the outer edge of the mannequin. Move the fabric slowly and steadily, allowing the sewing machine to create smooth, flowing lines. Remember that you are guiding the fabric rather than letting the feed dogs move it for you, so maintaining a consistent speed will help produce even stitching.

Don’t worry about making every stitch perfect. One of the biggest advantages of free-motion stitching is that small variations actually add charm and create the appearance of a hand-sketched design. With practice, you’ll develop smoother movements and greater control over your stitching.

Free-motion stitching adds personality and artistic texture. You can outline the appliqué once for a clean finish or stitch around it multiple times to create a thread-sketched effect with added depth and dimension.

This technique is also an excellent introduction to free-motion quilting. As your confidence grows, you can experiment with swirls, loops, echo quilting, and other decorative motifs around the appliqué to fill the background and enhance the overall design.

The more you practise, the more confident you’ll become. Every project is an opportunity to improve your control, experiment with different thread colours, and develop your own free-motion stitching style while mastering How to Applique : Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners.

Step 9 – Turn Your Appliqué into a Wall Hanging – How to Applique – Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Turn Your Appliqué into a Wall Hanging - How to Applique - Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Once the stitching is complete, you can transform your appliqué into beautiful home décor.

Apply a thin layer of Elmer’s glue to the canvas.

Attach batting to the back.

Centre the finished appliqué on the canvas.

Wrap the fabric around the back.

Staple the fabric securely.

This creates a lightweight sewing room decoration that also makes a thoughtful handmade gift.

  • Tote bags

  • Cushions

Tips for Success – How to Applique – Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Tips for Success - How to Applique - Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners

Following these helpful tips will make How to Applique : Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners even more enjoyable and help you achieve professional-looking results. Even small changes to your preparation and sewing techniques can make a big difference in the quality of your finished project.

Use Good Quality Cotton

Cotton quilting fabric produces crisp edges and is one of the easiest fabrics to work with for appliqué. It cuts cleanly, presses well, and holds its shape during stitching. Choosing high-quality cotton will also help prevent fraying and give your project a polished finish.

Press Carefully

Allow each fusible layer to cool before moving it. This gives the adhesive time to bond properly to the fabric. Avoid sliding your iron across the fabric, as this may shift the appliqué pieces out of position. Instead, lift and press the iron straight down, working your way across each section until it is securely attached.

Don’t Rush

Take your time positioning every piece before pressing permanently. One of the advantages of using Steamer Seam is that it allows you to reposition the appliqué until you’re happy with the placement. Spend a few extra minutes checking that everything is centred and aligned before making the bond permanent.

Practice Free Motion

Small projects are ideal for developing confidence. Before stitching around your mannequin, practise on a scrap piece of fabric with the same batting and stabilizer you plan to use. This allows you to adjust your thread tension, stitch speed, and hand movements without worrying about your finished project.

Experiment with Thread Colours

Decorative embroidery thread can completely change the appearance of your appliqué. Try matching the thread to your fabric for a subtle look, or use contrasting colours to make the stitching stand out. Metallic, variegated, or rayon embroidery threads can also add extra texture and visual interest.

Test Your Machine Settings

Before sewing on your final project, stitch a few practice lines on a fabric scrap. Testing your machine settings helps you check the thread tension, stitch quality, and needle choice. Making small adjustments beforehand can save time and prevent mistakes later.

Enjoy the Creative Process

Remember that appliqué is a creative technique, and every project will be slightly different. Don’t worry if your stitching isn’t perfectly uniform—those small variations add handmade charm and personality. As you continue practising How to Applique : Free Mannequin Applique Pattern for Beginners, your skills and confidence will grow, allowing you to tackle more detailed and creative appliqué designs in the future.

How to Applique: FREE Rotary Cutter Applique Pattern Using Steam-A-Seam

How to Applique: FREE Rotary Cutter Applique Pattern Using Steam-A-Seam

One of the easiest ways to learn How to Applique: FREE Rotary Cutter Applique Pattern is by using Steam-A-Seam because it features adhesive on both sides. This makes it an excellent choice for beginners and experienced sewists alike, as the adhesive holds each fabric piece securely while still allowing you to reposition the design before applying permanent heat with your iron.

If you prefer, HeatnBond works equally well and produces beautiful results. Both products are designed to make applique easier by preventing the fabric from shifting while you arrange your design. Whichever fusible web you choose, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the best bond and longest-lasting results.

The double-sided adhesive keeps each applique piece in place while allowing you to reposition your design before permanently pressing it with the iron. This flexibility is especially helpful when working with layered shapes like the rotary blade, slider, and handle, where proper placement creates a more realistic finished project. Take your time arranging every piece until you are completely satisfied with the layout.

Before pressing, make sure your fabric is smooth and wrinkle-free. A quick press with your iron will help the fusible web adhere evenly to the fabric. Once all of the pieces are positioned, use a dry iron to activate the adhesive, pressing firmly without sliding the iron back and forth. Sliding the iron may cause the applique pieces to shift out of place.

After the adhesive has cooled, the fabric pieces will be securely attached and ready for stitching. You can leave the edges raw for a modern look or finish each applique shape with a blanket stitch, satin stitch, or decorative machine stitch. These finishing techniques not only enhance the appearance of your project but also help prevent fraying, ensuring your rotary cutter wall hanging remains beautiful for years to come.

  • Outside blade circle
  • Inside blade circle
  • Blade slider
  • Blade centre
  • Rotary cutter handle

Don’t worry if every line isn’t perfectly precise. Small variations won’t affect the finished project.

Cutting the Fusible Pieces – How to Applique: FREE Rotary Cutter Applique Quilt Tutorial

Cutting the Fusible Pieces - How to Applique: FREE Rotary Cutter Applique Pattern

Instead of cutting directly on the traced lines, roughly cut around each shape. Leaving a small border around each template makes the pieces much easier to handle and helps ensure the fusible web bonds securely to the fabric before you make the final cuts.

This allows the adhesive to fuse securely to the fabric before making the final precise cuts. Once the fusible web has been pressed onto the wrong side of your fabric, let it cool completely before trimming. Allowing the adhesive to cool helps create a stronger bond and makes the paper backing easier to remove without lifting the fabric.

When you’re ready, use a sharp pair of fabric scissors or small embroidery scissors to carefully cut along the traced lines. Taking your time during this step will produce cleaner edges and give your applique project a more professional finish. Smooth, accurate cuts also make it much easier to position each applique piece so the finished rotary cutter looks neat and well-defined.

As you cut, keep all of the individual applique pieces together in a small tray or container so nothing gets misplaced. Since there are several small sections that make up the rotary cutter, organizing them before assembly will save time and reduce frustration later. If you’re making multiple applique projects, it’s also a good idea to label each set of pieces.

After every piece has been trimmed, compare them with your original template to ensure nothing has been accidentally cut too small. If necessary, make tiny adjustments before removing the paper backing. Careful preparation at this stage will make assembling your applique design much easier and help every layer fit together perfectly. Spending a little extra time cutting accurately will result in a polished applique project that you’ll be proud to display in your sewing room or give as a handmade gift.

The YouTube tutorial works alongside the pattern, giving you a visual guide as you complete each step.

Easy Applique Wall Hanging Fabric Preparation

Easy Applique Wall Hanging Fabric Preparation

The first step when creating your Easy Applique Wall Hanging is preparing all your fabric pieces.

I recommend cutting all your fabrics before starting the applique process. Having everything prepared makes the sewing process much smoother and allows you to focus on assembling your design.

Refer to page two of the instructions for the recommended fabric cutting measurements.

Once all your fabric pieces are cut, you can begin preparing your applique sections.

You will need:

  • Background fabric
  • Applique fabrics
  • Fusible adhesive
  • Sewing thread
  • Backing fabric
  • Binding fabric

Preparing everything in advance will save time and prevent mistakes later.

Preparing Applique Pieces With Fusible Adhesive – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Preparing Applique Pieces With Fusible Adhesive - Easy Applique Wall Hanging

For this project, I use fusible adhesive to create the applique pieces.

There are two ways you can transfer your applique shapes:

Option One: Tracing With a Light Box – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

The traditional method is tracing your applique shapes using a light box.

This method allows you to:

  • Save fusible adhesive
  • Move your templates around
  • Reduce waste
  • Have more control over placement

Simply place your template underneath your fusible adhesive and trace each shape.

Option Two: Printing Applique Templates – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Printing Applique Templates - Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Another option is printing your applique templates directly onto printable fusible adhesive.

This method is quicker, especially when working with letters.

However, there is one thing to remember.

The ink can smudge because the surface of printable fusible adhesive has a slightly waxy coating.

To prevent problems:

  • Avoid touching the printed areas too much
  • Allow the ink time to dry
  • Handle pieces carefully
  • Press lightly when positioning

For this Easy Applique Wall Hanging, printing the letters can save a lot of preparation time.

Cutting Out The Sewing Machine Applique Design

Start by cutting out the sewing machine applique section from your template.

Remember:

Do not cut directly on the line.

Leave a small amount of space around each piece until you are ready to attach it to your fabric.

Separate each section so you can easily identify where each piece belongs.

Using your applique layout key will help you keep track of each part.

Applying Fusible Adhesive To Fabric – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Applying Fusible Adhesive To Fabric - Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Once your applique pieces are prepared, it is time to attach the fusible adhesive to your fabric.

Remove the paper backing carefully.

A helpful tip is to press the paper against your thumb and gently pull the paper away. This helps remove the correct backing without accidentally pulling away the adhesive.

Place the adhesive onto the wrong side of your fabric.

Lightly press it into position.

Remember, the adhesive is designed to temporarily hold your applique pieces before final pressing and stitching.

Cutting Your Applique Shapes – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Cutting Your Applique Shapes - Easy Applique Wall Hanging

After attaching your fusible adhesive, cut around each applique shape.

For larger sections, use your fabric scissors to remove excess fabric first.

Then use smaller scissors for detailed areas.

Small sections, such as:

  • Sewing machine needles
  • Buttons
  • Letter openings
  • Tiny details

are easier to cut using smaller sharp scissors.

Keep the paper backing attached until you are ready to place each piece.

Building Your Easy Applique Wall Hanging Design – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Building Your Easy Applique Wall Hanging Design - Easy Applique Wall Hanging

One of my favourite parts of creating an Easy Applique Wall Hanging is arranging all the little details.

The wonderful thing about fusible adhesive is that it allows you to reposition your pieces before permanently pressing them.

Take your time.

Arrange:

  • Sewing machine sections
  • Buttons
  • Needle plate
  • Thread details
  • Decorative pieces

until you are happy with the design.

Think of it like creating a fabric puzzle.

Each piece should slightly overlap the next piece so everything joins together securely once pressed.

Pressing Your Applique Pieces Together – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Pressing Your Applique Pieces Together - Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Once all your applique pieces are positioned correctly, place a pressing sheet or Teflon sheet over your design.

Using your iron, press according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

This will permanently fuse the applique pieces together into one complete design.

Take your time during this stage.

Once pressed, your applique design will feel almost like a fabric sticker ready to attach to your wall hanging background.

Attaching the Applique Design to the Wall Hanging Background

Now that your sewing machine applique design has been created, it is time to attach it to the background fabric of your Easy Applique Wall Hanging.

Before pressing anything permanently, take a moment to find the centre of your wall hanging.

A simple way to do this is by folding your background fabric gently in half and finger pressing the fold. Repeat this in the opposite direction to create a cross mark. This gives you a guide to help position your applique design perfectly in the centre.

You can also lightly fold your sewing machine applique piece in half to find the centre point.

Place the design onto your background fabric and check:

  • Is it centred?
  • Is it straight?
  • Is there enough space around the edges?
  • Are you happy with the placement?

Do not press it permanently yet because we still need to add the applique lettering.

Taking a few extra minutes to check your placement will help your finished Easy Applique Wall Hanging look professional.

Adding Applique Letters to Your Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Adding Applique Letters to Your Easy Applique Wall Hanging

The lettering is one of the most important parts of this project because it creates the final design and gives your wall hanging its personality.

Begin by cutting out your letters from the template sheets.

At this stage, you do not need to cut around every individual letter. Cut around each section first to make the process faster and easier.

Apply your fusible adhesive to the wrong side of your letter fabric pieces.

Remember to make sure:

  • The adhesive side is facing the fabric
  • The paper template side is facing upwards
  • The letters are transferred correctly

If you are printing your letters onto fusible adhesive, take extra care because the ink can transfer onto your fingers.

Cutting Out Detailed Applique Letters – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Once the letters have been fused onto your fabric, carefully cut around each letter.

For larger letters:

  1. Cut away the excess fabric with larger scissors.
  2. Use smaller scissors for detailed sections.
  3. Carefully cut around curves and inside openings.

For example, letters with enclosed areas may need extra attention.

Keep the paper backing attached until you are ready to place each letter.

This makes handling the pieces much easier.

Creating Straight Letter Placement Lines – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Creating Straight Letter Placement Lines - Easy Applique Wall Hanging

One of the easiest ways to achieve a professional finish on your Easy Applique Wall Hanging is making sure your words are straight.

Crooked lettering can make an otherwise beautiful project look uneven.

A cutting mat is very helpful for this step.

Use the grid lines on your mat to align your fabric.

You can also use a removable fabric marking pen, such as a Frixion pen, to create placement guidelines.

The benefit of using a Frixion pen is that the markings disappear when heated with an iron.

When marking your lines:

  • Check your measurements
  • Use the pattern instructions as your guide
  • Make sure each line is straight before placing letters

Positioning the Words on Your Applique Wall Hanging – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Now it is time to arrange your words.

Start by placing the first and last letters of each word.

This helps create the correct spacing.

Once the outside letters are positioned, fill in the remaining letters between them.

Leave a small gap between letters so the words remain easy to read.

Follow the placement guide included with your pattern.

Take your time during this step because once the letters are permanently pressed into place, they cannot easily be moved.

Before pressing:

✔ Check spelling
✔ Check letter spacing
✔ Check alignment
✔ Check that everything is straight

This final check can save you from having to remove and replace letters later.

Permanently Fusing Your Applique Design – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Once you are completely happy with your design, press everything into place.

The heat from your iron activates the adhesive and permanently attaches the applique pieces to your fabric.

Your Easy Applique Wall Hanging should now have:

  • The sewing machine design attached
  • All decorative applique pieces secured
  • The lettering correctly positioned

Now you are ready for the quilting stage.

Preparing Your Wall Hanging for Quilting

Preparing Your Wall Hanging for Quilting

Before beginning free motion quilting, I like to use a temporary fabric adhesive spray.

A product such as 505 spray adhesive helps hold your layers together while quilting.

Spray your backing fabric lightly and position your quilt top carefully.

Smooth everything flat, removing any wrinkles or bubbles.

Your quilt sandwich will include:

  1. Quilt backing
  2. Batting
  3. Applique quilt top

Making sure your layers are smooth before quilting will give you a much better finished result.

Free Motion Quilting Your Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Free motion quilting is where your project really comes alive.

For this Easy Applique Wall Hanging, I like to quilt around the applique shapes to make them stand out.

This technique is sometimes called thread painting because you are using thread to enhance and define the design.

You can quilt around:

  • The sewing machine shape
  • Each letter
  • Decorative applique pieces
  • Small details

For this project, I used a matching thread colour so the quilting blends into the design.

However, you can also use contrasting thread if you want the stitching to become a feature.

Both options create a beautiful result.

Quilting Tips for Beginners – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Quilting Tips for Beginners - Easy Applique Wall Hanging

If you are new to free motion quilting, remember:

Practice First – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Before quilting your wall hanging, practice on a scrap sandwich of fabric and batting.

This allows you to get comfortable with:

  • Speed control
  • Moving the fabric
  • Creating smooth curves

Use The Right Foot – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

A quilting foot with good visibility makes it easier to follow your applique shapes.

A more open foot allows you to see where you are stitching.

Take Your Time – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

There is no need to rush.

Slow, controlled movements will create much better results.

Quilting With a Sewing Machine – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

You do not need a mid-arm quilting machine to complete this project.

You can quilt your Easy Applique Wall Hanging using a regular sewing machine.

Simply:

  • Lower your feed dogs
  • Attach your free motion quilting foot
  • Practice your movement
  • Stitch around your applique pieces

This makes the project accessible for many different sewing levels.

Adding the Quilt Backing – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Once your applique and free motion quilting are complete, attach the backing fabric.

Again, using temporary adhesive spray can help keep everything smooth and secure.

Start quilting from the centre and work your way outward.

A simple meandering quilting design works beautifully for this project.

The goal is to secure all layers together while allowing the applique design to remain the focus.

Squaring Up Your Easy Applique Wall Hanging

After completing the quilting, the next step in your Easy Applique Wall Hanging project is squaring it up.

This is an important step because it gives your finished project clean, straight edges and prepares it perfectly for binding.

Place your wall hanging on your cutting mat and carefully check all four sides.

Using a rotary cutter and ruler:

  • Trim away any excess batting and backing fabric
  • Make sure your corners are square
  • Keep your measurements even on all sides
  • Follow the trimming instructions included in your pattern

Taking your time during this stage will make the binding process much easier.

A neatly squared quilt will always give you a more professional finish.

Preparing Binding for Your Easy Applique Wall Hanging – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Preparing Binding for Your Easy Applique Wall Hanging - Easy Applique Wall Hanging

The next step is preparing your binding.

For this project, you will have three strips of fabric that need to be joined together.

Joining binding strips correctly creates one continuous length that will wrap around the entire wall hanging.

To join your binding strips:

  1. Place one strip horizontally.
  2. Place another strip vertically across the first strip.
  3. Make sure the right sides of the fabric are together.
  4. Sew diagonally across the join.
  5. Trim away the excess fabric.
  6. Press the seam open.

Repeat this process until all your binding strips are connected.

Joining binding on the diagonal helps reduce bulk and creates a smoother finish around the edges.

Using a Laser Guide When Sewing Binding – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

If your sewing machine has a laser guide feature, this is a wonderful tool for attaching binding.

For this project, I use the laser guide on my sewing machine because it creates a perfectly straight stitching line.

The laser acts like a guide, allowing you to follow a straight path without needing to mark your fabric.

This is especially helpful when sewing long binding strips.

Simply:

  • Attach your guide
  • Line up your fabric
  • Follow the laser beam
  • Maintain an even seam allowance

Features like this can make sewing projects faster and more accurate.

Creating Perfect Mitered Binding Corners – Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Corners are often the part of binding that beginners find the most challenging.

The trick is knowing when to stop stitching.

When approaching a corner:

  1. Sew your binding onto the quilt edge.
  2. Stop before reaching the corner.
  3. Lift your needle.
  4. Fold the binding away from the quilt.
  5. Fold it back down to create a neat diagonal fold.
  6. Continue sewing along the next edge.

This creates a beautiful mitered corner.

A binding tool can also make joining your final ends much easier.

Joining The Final Binding Ends

When you reach the final section of binding, you will need to join the two ends together.

This is where many people struggle because too much fabric can create a bulky section.

A binding tool helps measure the correct amount needed.

The process is:

  1. Overlap your binding ends.
  2. Use the tool measurement guide.
  3. Mark where you need to cut.
  4. Join the ends together.
  5. Trim away excess fabric.
  6. Sew the final seam.

Once completed, your binding should lay flat without bumps or extra bulk.

Hand Stitching The Binding

For this Easy Applique Wall Hanging, I prefer to hand stitch the binding onto the front.

While some people stitch binding completely by machine, hand stitching gives you more control, especially around corners.

Use wonder clips to hold the binding in place.

Then:

  • Thread your needle
  • Use small invisible stitches
  • Catch only the edge of the binding
  • Avoid stitching completely through to the front

Take your time with this step.

Beautiful hand stitching gives your wall hanging a handmade professional finish.

Creating The Hanging Sleeve

Creating The Hanging Sleeve

A hanging sleeve allows your finished Easy Applique Wall Hanging to be displayed on a dowel rod.

To make the sleeve:

  1. Take your sleeve fabric.
  2. Fold a quarter inch on each short edge.
  3. Fold again to hide the raw edges.
  4. Stitch these edges securely.
  5. Fold the sleeve in half with wrong sides together.
  6. Press the fold.

Next, open it back up and fold each side towards the centre.

Press carefully.

When finished, the sleeve should have a little extra space inside.

This extra room is important because the dowel rod needs space to slide through.

Attaching The Hanging Sleeve To Your Wall Hanging

The hanging sleeve is attached to the back of your project.

Position it:

  • Slightly below the top edge
  • Evenly centred
  • With enough room for your dowel rod

Pin the sleeve into place.

Remember:

Do not sew through to the front of your wall hanging.

You only want to catch the backing fabric and quilt layers.

Use small hand stitches to attach the sleeve securely.

A correctly attached sleeve will allow your wall hanging to hang flat without pulling or distorting the fabric.

Adding The Dowel Rod And Hanging Hardware

Adding The Dowel Rod And Hanging Hardware

The final step is preparing your dowel rod.

For this project, I use a wooden dowel cut to size.

To create a hanging system:

  1. Drill small pilot holes at each end of the dowel.
  2. Insert screw eyes.
  3. Thread strong cord or fishing line through the loops.
  4. Tie securely.

Pilot holes make inserting the screw eyes easier and prevent splitting the wood.

If you have difficulty gripping or twisting the hardware, using a small tool can make this process much easier.

Displaying Your Finished Easy Applique Wall Hanging

Congratulations!

Your Easy Applique Wall Hanging is now complete.

You have created a project that combines:

  • Fabric applique
  • Fusible adhesive techniques
  • Letter placement
  • Free motion quilting
  • Binding
  • Hand stitching
  • Quilt finishing techniques

This project makes a beautiful addition to a sewing room, craft room, or creative workspace.

It also makes a thoughtful handmade gift for anyone who loves sewing and quilting.

Easy Applique Wall Hanging Tips For Success

Easy Applique Wall Hanging Tips For Success

Here are some helpful tips to make your project easier:

Take Your Time With Placement

The applique placement stage is where your design comes together.

Do not rush.

Spend extra time checking:

  • Spacing
  • Alignment
  • Letter placement
  • Overall balance

Keep Your Applique Pieces Organised

Small applique pieces can easily get mixed up.

Keep sections together in labelled containers or bags.

Use Quality Fusible Adhesive

A good fusible adhesive will make your applique pieces easier to handle and longer lasting.

Practice Free Motion Quilting

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas – Amazing Step-by-Step Guide for a Professional Finish

If you’ve ever wondered How to wrap Fabric on a Canvas, you’ve come to the right place. Wrapping fabric around a canvas is one of the easiest ways to display quilting, appliqué, embroidery, or textile art without the need for traditional framing. It’s affordable, looks incredibly professional, and is perfect for decorating your home, giving handmade gifts, or selling your work at craft markets.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you How to wrap a canvas with fabric step by step using simple supplies that you can find at your local dollar store or craft store. With just a little preparation and careful folding, you’ll create beautiful canvas art with crisp corners and a neat finish that looks professionally made.

Whether you’re displaying a favourite appliqué design, a quilt block, machine embroidery, or diy fabric wall art art, this project how to wrap method gives your handmade creation a polished appearance that is ready to hang. This tutorial will show you how to achieve a professional finish for your fabric projects.

Why Learn How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas?

Why Learn How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas

Learning How to wrap Fabric on a Canvas opens up endless creative possibilities.

Instead of storing your favourite quilt blocks in a drawer, you can proudly display them on your wall. Canvas wrapping transforms fabric into artwork while protecting it and making it easy to hang.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Gives your quilting projects a professional finish.
  • Perfect for appliqué, embroidery, and mini quilts.
  • Great for handmade gifts.
  • Easy to sell at craft fairs or online.
  • Much lighter than traditional framed artwork.
  • Affordable supplies.
  • Can easily be changed if you want a different design later.

One of my favourite things about using canvases is that they’re inexpensive. I often purchase mine from the dollar store, although craft stores also carry thicker premium-quality canvases if you prefer a deeper profile.

Supplies for How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas

Supplies for How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas

Before you begin, gather your supplies.

Canvas

A standard artist canvas works perfectly.

For this tutorial I’m using a 12 x 12-inch canvas, but this technique works for any size.

You can purchase canvases from:

  • Dollar stores
  • Craft stores
  • Art supply shops
  • Online retailers

The thicker gallery-style canvases create a slightly more dramatic appearance, while thinner canvases are perfect for everyday decorating.

Quilt Batting

One secret to making your finished artwork look professionally padded is adding quilt batting.

For a 12-inch canvas, cut your batting approximately 11 x 11 inches.

Making the batting slightly smaller than the canvas reduces unnecessary bulk while giving your fabric a beautifully smooth appearance.

Without batting, the fabric often sits flat against the canvas and doesn’t have the same luxurious finish.

Fabric Artwork

For the best results, cut your fabric approximately 2 inches larger than the canvas on every side.

For example:

  • Canvas: 12 x 12 inches
  • Fabric: 15 x 15 inches

This extra fabric allows enough material to wrap neatly around the edges while creating beautiful folded corners.

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas – Preparing Your Canvas

The first step in How to wrap Fabric on a Canvas is preparing the canvas before attaching your artwork.

Place the quilt batting in the centre of the canvas.

There’s no need to completely cover the back with glue.

Instead, apply a few small lines of ordinary school glue to the front of the canvas.

The glue simply keeps the batting from shifting while you position your fabric.

Once the batting is secured, centre your appliqué or quilt block carefully.

Take your time during this step because accurate positioning makes the finished artwork look balanced once it’s hanging on the wall.

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas – Why Glue the Batting First?

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas - Why Glue the Batting First

Many beginners skip this step, but it makes a noticeable difference.

The batting stays perfectly centred while you stretch the fabric around the canvas.

Without glue, the batting can slide around as you pull the fabric tight, creating uneven areas and lumps beneath your finished project.

Using a small amount of washable school glue is inexpensive and works surprisingly well.

An added bonus is that you can remove everything later if you decide you’d like to display a different piece of fabric art on the same canvas.

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas – Essential Tool : Heavy-Duty Stapler

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas - Essential Tool: Heavy-Duty Stapler

Choosing the Right Stapler

One tool that makes How to wrap Fabric on a Canvas much easier is a heavy-duty stapler.

Regular office staplers simply don’t have enough power to drive staples into a wooden canvas frame.

Investing in a proper staple gun is well worth the cost if you plan to create multiple fabric canvases.

It produces secure staples while making the process much faster and easier.

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas - Folding the Fabric for a Professional Finish

Before stapling the fabric, fold the raw edge inward approximately ¼ inch.

Press the fold with a hot iron.

This simple step hides the raw edge completely and creates a clean, polished appearance on the back of the canvas.

Rather than leaving unfinished fabric exposed, every edge looks neat and tidy.

Continue pressing each side before stapling.

Although it adds a few extra minutes, this technique dramatically improves the finished appearance especially if you’re planning to sell your artwork or give it as a gift.

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas – Stapling the First Two Sides

After pressing the first folded edge, pull the fabric gently around the canvas.

Avoid stretching too tightly.

The goal is to remove wrinkles while keeping your design square.

Place several staples across the first side.

Move directly to the opposite side next.

Pull gently to create even tension before stapling.

Working on opposite sides first helps keep your artwork centred and prevents distortion in the design.

At this stage, don’t worry about the corners.

Leave them until all four sides are attached.

Doing so makes them much easier to fold neatly later.

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas – Reduce Bulk Before Folding the Corners

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas - Reduce Bulk Before Folding the Corners

One professional tip is trimming away some of the excess fabric before folding the corners.

Removing a small amount of bulk prevents thick lumps from forming underneath the folded fabric.

This small adjustment creates much flatter, cleaner corners while making the folding process significantly easier.

It’s one of those little finishing details that separates homemade projects from professionally presented fabric art.

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas : Creating Perfect Professional Corners

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas: Creating Perfect Professional Corners

The corners are what truly separate a homemade project from one that looks professionally finished. While the sides are relatively straightforward, taking a little extra time with the corners will give your fabric canvas a crisp, polished appearance.

Think of the process as wrapping a present. Your goal is to create smooth folds while hiding every raw edge of the fabric.

Begin by folding the pressed edge around the canvas. Then gently push the corner fabric inward before folding it over itself. This creates a neat mitred corner that sits flat against the wooden frame.

As you work, keep checking the front of your project. The fabric should remain smooth, and your appliqué or quilt block should stay centred. If something begins to shift, simply remove the staple and reposition the fabric before continuing.

Once you’re happy with the corner, secure it with one or two staples.

Repeat exactly the same process on the opposite corner before moving on to the remaining two corners.

Taking your time here will make a huge difference to the overall presentation of your finished artwork.

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas – Press Every Fold Before Stapling

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas - Press Every Fold Before Stapling

Although it may be tempting to skip the ironing, pressing each folded edge makes the entire project easier.

A pressed fold stays exactly where you place it, allowing you to staple with much greater accuracy.

Using an iron also creates crisp edges that give the back of your canvas a clean, professional appearance.

Whenever possible:

  • Fold the raw edge under.
  • Press the fold with your iron.
  • Position the fabric.
  • Check the front.
  • Staple securely.

Repeating these simple steps on every side produces consistently beautiful results.

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas – Keep Your Fabric Straight

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas - Keep Your Fabric Straight

As you continue wrapping the remaining sides, keep checking that the fabric stays straight along the edge of the canvas.

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is pulling harder on one side than the other.

Instead, apply gentle, even tension.

The fabric should lie smoothly across the batting without becoming overstretched.

If you’re displaying detailed appliqué, embroidery, or quilting, keeping everything square ensures your artwork looks balanced once it is hanging on the wall.

Professional Tips for How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas

Professional Tips for How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas

After making many fabric canvases over the years, I’ve found several small tricks that make a big difference.

Centre Your Design Carefully

Before attaching anything permanently, double-check that your design is perfectly centred.

A few extra moments spent adjusting the placement will ensure equal borders all the way around.

Don’t Skip the Batting

The thin layer of quilt batting adds softness and dimension to your finished artwork.

It helps your fabric sit beautifully on the canvas and gives the piece a premium appearance.

Use Quality Fabric

Although almost any quilting cotton will work, high-quality cotton fabrics generally wrap more smoothly and create sharper corners.

They also tend to stretch less while stapling.

Work Slowly

There is no prize for finishing quickly.

Taking your time allows you to make small adjustments as you go and produces a much neater result.

Common Mistakes to Avoid – How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas

Common Mistakes to Avoid - How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas

Even experienced sewists occasionally make mistakes. Fortunately, they’re easy to avoid.

Pulling Too Tight

Stretching the fabric too tightly can distort your appliqué or quilting.

Instead, pull just enough to remove wrinkles while keeping the design flat.

Forgetting to Fold the Raw Edge

Leaving the raw edge exposed makes the back look unfinished.

Always fold the fabric under before stapling.

Ignoring the Corners

Messy corners immediately draw attention.

Spend a little extra time folding each corner carefully.

Using the Wrong Stapler

A lightweight office stapler usually isn’t strong enough.

A heavy-duty staple gun provides much better results and holds the fabric securely.

Skipping the Iron

Pressed folds are easier to manage and produce a cleaner finish.

Never underestimate how much ironing improves the final appearance.

Displaying Your Finished Fabric Canvas

Displaying Your Finished Fabric Canvas

One of the best things about wrapping fabric around a canvas is that your project is immediately ready to display.

You can:

  • Hang it in your sewing room.
  • Decorate your home.
  • Create a gallery wall.
  • Give it as a thoughtful handmade gift.
  • Sell it at craft fairs.
  • Display seasonal quilt blocks throughout the year.

Because canvases are lightweight, they are simple to hang with standard picture hooks or removable wall strips.

Why Fabric Canvas Art Makes Wonderful Gifts

A handmade fabric canvas is a meaningful gift that showcases your creativity.

Whether it’s a beautiful appliqué, an embroidered design, or a favourite quilt block, presenting it on a canvas instantly elevates your work.

Unlike folded quilts that may spend time in a cupboard, fabric canvas art becomes part of someone’s everyday home décor.

It’s a gift they’ll enjoy every time they walk past it.

How to Wrap Fabric on a Canvas – Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any size canvas?

Yes.

This technique works with small canvases, large wall art, and everything in between.

If you’ve used only a small amount of washable glue for the batting, you can remove the staples, lift away the fabric, and reuse the canvas for another project.

Download Your Free Pattern for How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging

Faodail Creation Facebook Group

The first step in How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging is downloading the free applique pattern available in the Faodail Creation Facebook Group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/405258636506758

Print the pattern at 100% scale so all of the pieces fit together correctly. Before cutting anything, double-check that the finished size matches the measurements listed in the tutorial.

Tracing the Applique Pieces for How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging

Tracing the Applique Pieces for How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging

Prepare the Steam-A-Seam

Place your Steam-A-Seam directly over the printed pattern.

One advantage of Steam-A-Seam is that it is repositionable, making it much easier to assemble your design before permanently ironing everything into place.

Trace each applique piece individually.

These include:

  • Cat face
  • Sunglasses
  • Nose

Leave a small space between each traced shape so they’re easier to cut apart later.

Don’t worry about tracing the cat in reverse. Since the design is symmetrical, it won’t affect the finished appearance.

Cutting the Fusible Shapes for How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging

Cutting the Fusible Shapes for How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging

After tracing every section, cut around each piece.

Instead of cutting directly on the traced line, leave a small border around every shape.

This extra border makes the pieces easier to handle while you’re ironing them onto the fabric.

Take your time with the sunglasses, as they’re the smallest and most detailed pieces in the project. A pair of embroidery scissors works especially well for these curves.

When learning How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging, accuracy during cutting is very important because it directly affects how clean and professional your final design will look. Try to rotate your fabric rather than your scissors when cutting around tight curves, as this gives you better control and smoother edges. It also helps to work slowly and in good lighting so you can clearly see your traced lines.

If any pieces feel too small or difficult to manage, you can lightly press them between your fingers before cutting to keep them stable. This prevents fraying edges and helps maintain the shape of each applique element. Remember, patience during this stage of How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging will make the ironing and assembly process much easier and more enjoyable later on. Clean, precise cuts ensure your final cat design looks sharp, balanced, and beautifully handmade.

Preparing the Background Fabric

Before assembling the applique, prepare your background fabric.

Fold the fabric in half.

Then fold it in half again.

This allows you to locate the exact center of your project.

Mark the center lightly using a friction pen or another removable fabric marker.

If you’re using black fabric, take a lint roller over the surface before beginning. Dark fabrics tend to collect lint, threads, and dust, which can show up easily during sewing and photography.

A clean background helps your finished wall hanging look polished and professional.

Ironing the Applique onto the Fabric

Ironing the Applique onto the Fabric

Now comes one of the most enjoyable parts of How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging.

Place each traced Steam-A-Seam piece onto the correct fabric.

For this project, the cat is made using black fabric, inspired by a real-life black cat.

If your Steam-A-Seam sticks to the wrong paper backing, simply press your thumb against the adhesive. This helps release the correct side so you can remove the backing without damaging your traced lines.

Position every applique piece carefully.

Once you’re happy with the placement, press each piece according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Allow everything to cool before moving on to the next step.

This stage of How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging is where your design truly starts to come to life. Take a moment to step back and check that all pieces are aligned properly and balanced on the fabric. Small adjustments made now will save you time later and ensure a polished finish. Make sure your iron is set to the correct heat level for your chosen fabric type to avoid any scorching or distortion. Once pressed, gently run your hand over the surface to confirm everything is securely bonded before continuing.

Cutting Out the Fabric Applique

After ironing, carefully cut each applique piece directly on the traced lines.

Take your time around curves.

The sunglasses especially benefit from small, sharp embroidery scissors.

If you’d like to customize your design, now is a great opportunity.

For example, you could:

  • Make a larger nose.
  • Create different sunglasses.
  • Add a bow tie.
  • Add flowers.
  • Change the ears.
  • Create a smiling mouth.

Applique allows endless creativity.

Positioning the Cat Design

Positioning the Cat Design

One reason many sewists love Steam-A-Seam is because it remains repositionable before final pressing.

Remove the paper backing.

You’ll immediately notice the exposed adhesive.

Arrange each applique piece onto your background fabric.

Move the sunglasses, nose, and face until everything looks perfectly balanced.

Step back occasionally and look at your project from a distance.

Sometimes a tiny adjustment makes a surprisingly big difference.

Once you’re satisfied, press everything firmly into place using your iron.

Now your cat design is permanently attached and ready for embroidery.

This stage of How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging is where your creativity really shines. Take your time experimenting with placement until the expression of the cat feels just right. You can tilt the sunglasses slightly for a playful look or adjust the nose placement to change the personality of the design.

Because the adhesive is still repositionable at this stage, don’t be afraid to lift and reposition pieces multiple times until you’re fully happy. This flexibility is one of the biggest advantages when learning How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging, especially for beginners who want full control over their finished result.

Adding Embroidered Details

Adding Embroidered Details

Embroidery gives this applique project personality.

Use a chalk pencil to lightly draw the outline of the cat’s face.

Next, mark the whiskers.

Where the markings cross onto darker fabrics, switch to a friction pen so they’re easier to see while stitching.

Choose DMC embroidery floss number 535 for a soft gray finish.

Separate one strand at a time until you have three strands together.

Three strands create embroidery that’s bold enough to stand out while remaining delicate and neat.

Thread your needle and begin stitching around the facial outline and whiskers using smooth, even stitches.

These embroidered details bring your cat to life and add beautiful handmade charm to the finished wall hanging.

Finishing Off the Canvas

Finishing Off the Canvas

Once your applique and embroidery work is complete, the final step in How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging is mounting everything onto the canvas to create a professional-looking wall display.

Start by preparing your canvas frame. Make sure it is clean, smooth, and free from dust or debris. Lay it face down on a flat surface so you can work on the back easily.

Next, take a glue stick and apply an even layer across the front surface of the canvas. This helps secure the batting and gives your wall hanging a soft, padded finish that looks more polished and dimensional.

Place your quilt batting over the glued canvas. Smooth it down gently with your hands, making sure there are no wrinkles or bubbles. The batting should sit evenly across the entire surface, as this will support your fabric and give the wall hanging a professional quilted look.

Now position your finished applique fabric on top of the batting. Take your time to center the design properly. This is an important step in How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging, as correct alignment ensures your cat design looks balanced and visually appealing once mounted.

Smooth the fabric from the center outward, pressing out any air pockets as you go. You want a flat, tight surface so the final piece looks neat and well-finished.

Once everything is in place, flip the canvas over carefully. Pull the fabric tightly around the back of the frame, making sure it remains smooth on the front. Start stapling one side at a time, working opposite edges to keep the tension even. This prevents puckering or shifting.

Fold the corners neatly, similar to wrapping a gift, and secure them with staples. Take your time here, as clean corners make a big difference in the final presentation of your How to Applique a Cat Wall Hanging project.

Continue stapling until all sides are secure and the fabric is firmly attached. Check the front again to ensure there are no wrinkles or loose areas. If needed, you can gently adjust before finishing the last few staples.

Once complete, your canvas wall hanging is fully assembled and ready to display. You can hang it in a sewing room, craft space, hallway, or gift it to someone special who loves handmade décor.

How to Create a Template for Your Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project

How to Create a Template for Your Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project

Designing Your Monogram Letter

The first step in creating a Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project is designing your template.

Open Microsoft Word and insert an oval shape. Remove the fill color and increase the outline thickness so it is easy to trace. Next, insert a WordArt letter that will become the focal point of your project.

Because applique requires mirrored templates, you must reverse the letter before tracing. If your software does not allow easy flipping, simply print the design and use a light box to trace the letter in reverse.

This technique ensures your Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project appears correctly when the applique pieces are turned right side out.

When choosing your letter size, make sure it fits comfortably inside the oval shape while leaving a decorative border around the edges. This border helps frame the monogram and creates a balanced, professional-looking design. You can also experiment with different fonts to achieve various cottagecore styles, from elegant script lettering to classic serif fonts.

Before printing your template, check that both the oval and letter are sized appropriately for your canvas. Taking a few extra minutes during the design stage will make assembling your Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project much easier and help ensure a beautiful finished result.

Tracing the Applique Shapes

Place Steam-A-Seam over the reversed letter and trace around the shape.

Leave extra space around the traced letter. Do not cut directly on the line at this stage. The extra border allows the adhesive to bond fully to the fabric.

Next, trace the oval shape. Since the oval is symmetrical, reversing it is unnecessary.

Once completed, you should have:

  • One traced monogram letter
  • One traced oval background

These pieces form the foundation of your Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project.

Preparing Fabric for a Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project

Preparing Fabric for a Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project

Pressing the Fabric

Proper preparation is important for a successful Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project.

Press all fabrics thoroughly before applying the adhesive. Wrinkles can distort applique shapes and affect final placement.

Applying Steam-A-Seam

Carefully peel the paper backing from the Steam-A-Seam.

You may notice the adhesive wants to remain attached to one side. Guide the adhesive onto the desired side before placing it onto the wrong side of the fabric.

For this Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project:

  • Attach the letter template to the olive green fabric.
  • Attach the oval template to the neutral sepia fabric.

Follow the manufacturer’s pressing instructions and allow the pieces to cool completely before cutting.

Taking the time to apply the Steam-A-Seam correctly will help ensure clean edges and secure adhesion throughout your Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project. Make sure your iron is set to the recommended temperature for your fabric type and avoid moving the iron back and forth, as this can shift the template.

Instead, press firmly and lift the iron between sections. Allowing the fabric to cool completely before cutting is important because it gives the adhesive time to bond properly. This simple step will make cutting easier and help your applique pieces maintain their shape during assembly.

Cutting the Applique Pieces

Cutting the Applique Pieces

Cutting the Oval

Once cooled, cut directly on the traced line.

Take your time and create smooth, accurate cuts.

The oval serves as the background element for your Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project and helps frame the monogram beautifully.

Cutting the Letter

Carefully cut around the monogram letter.

Because the design was traced in reverse, it will appear correctly once cut and turned right side out.

This is one of the most important steps in a Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project because proper reversing ensures the finished monogram faces the correct direction.

Positioning Your Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project

Positioning Your Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project

Finding the Center

Fold your main background fabric in half vertically and horizontally.

Create gentle crease lines to identify the center.

Mark the center point using a removable fabric marker or friction pen.

Next, fold the oval lightly in half both vertically and horizontally to locate its center points.

Align these markings with the center of the background fabric.

Centering helps your Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project look balanced and professional.

Arranging the Applique Pieces

Remove the paper backing from the oval.

Position it on the center of the background fabric.

One advantage of Steam-A-Seam is its repositionable adhesive, allowing you to adjust placement before permanently pressing.

Next, position the monogram letter in the center of the oval.

Continue adjusting until you are satisfied with the appearance of your Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project.

Pressing the Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project

Pressing the Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project

Once all pieces are aligned, press the applique into place.

The adhesive creates a secure bond and holds the design firmly.

Because this Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project is intended as wall décor rather than a washable item, additional stitching is optional.

Many sewists choose to leave the applique unstiched because the adhesive provides adequate hold for decorative use.

However, decorative blanket stitch, satin stitch, or straight stitch can be added if desired.

Optional Applique Stitching

Popular stitch choices include:

Blanket Stitch

Provides a traditional handmade appearance.

Satin Stitch

Creates a bold decorative edge.

Straight Stitch

Offers a clean modern finish.

Any of these methods can enhance a Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project while adding extra durability.

Mounting Your Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project on Canvas

Mounting Your Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project on Canvas

Preparing the Canvas

Apply a thin layer of glue stick adhesive to the canvas surface.

Place quilt backing or batting over the canvas.

This extra layer helps smooth the fabric and creates a more finished appearance.

Wrapping the Fabric

Position the completed applique fabric over the prepared canvas.

Make sure the design remains centered.

Pull the fabric gently around the edges of the canvas.

Using a staple gun, secure the fabric on the back.

Work from opposite sides to maintain even tension.

Continue stapling until the entire Cottagecore Vintage Floral Letter Wall Hanging Applique Project is securely mounted.

Open Toe Sewing Foot

An open toe foot helps improve visibility while stitching around applique shapes.

90/14 Sewing Needle

A 90/14 needle works well for stitching through layered fabrics and organza.

Pins or Clips

These help hold your fabric layers securely in place.

Step 1: Print Your Design for How to Shadow Applique

The first step in How to Shadow Applique is preparing your applique design.

Print your applique design onto printable Heat n Bond. This makes it easy to transfer your shapes onto fabric accurately.

Carefully cut out your applique pieces and attach them to your cotton fabric following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Using several different fabric colors is highly recommended when learning How to Shadow Applique because the layered colors show beautifully through the organza.

Bright contrasting colors create a much more dramatic shadow effect.

When choosing fabrics for How to Shadow Applique, try combining light, medium, and dark shades to create extra depth underneath the organza layer. Floral fabrics, batiks, and bright solid cottons all work beautifully for this sewing technique. Before permanently attaching your applique pieces, lay them out on your background fabric to experiment with placement and color combinations.

This helps you visualize the final shadow effect before stitching. Taking a few extra minutes during the design stage can make a huge difference in the overall appearance of your finished project and gives your shadow applique a more balanced and artistic look.

Step 2: Build Your Quilt Sandwich

Build Your Quilt Sandwich - How to Shadow Applique

The next step in How to Shadow Applique is creating your quilt sandwich.

Layer Your Fabrics

Place your backing fabric down first.

Next, add your batting layer.

Then position your applique fabric on top.

Finally, place the organza over the entire design.

The organza is what creates the beautiful soft shadow look in How to Shadow Applique.

You can experiment with different organza colors for different effects:

  • White organza creates a soft subtle finish
  • Gray organza gives a darker shadow appearance
  • Colored organza creates artistic layered effects

Step 3: Pin Everything Securely

Once your layers are arranged, pin everything securely around the edges.

This is a very important step in How to Shadow Applique because organza can shift while sewing.

Take your time smoothing out wrinkles and making sure all layers remain flat.

Keeping your fabric stable will help create clean stitching lines around your applique shapes.

Because organza is lightweight and slippery, it can easily move while stitching if it is not secured properly. When learning How to Shadow Applique, using plenty of pins or sewing clips will help prevent puckering and uneven stitching. Start pinning from the center of your project and work outward toward the edges to keep the layers smooth and balanced.

You may also find it helpful to lightly press the fabric layers with an iron before sewing to remove wrinkles and flatten the quilt sandwich. Taking extra time during this preparation step makes the sewing process much easier and helps your finished shadow applique project look neat, professional, and beautifully layered.

Step 4: Set Up Your Sewing Machine

Set Up Your Sewing Machine - How to Shadow Applique

Machine setup is important when learning How to Shadow Applique.

For this demonstration, I used the Baby Lock Elise 2 sewing machine.

Straight Stitch

Use a regular straight stitch to outline all applique shapes.

Polyester Thread

Use white polyester thread in both the top thread and bobbin.

Needle Choice

A 90/14 needle works well for layered fabrics.

Open Toe Foot

An open toe foot improves visibility while stitching curves and corners.

When practicing How to Shadow Applique, always test your stitch settings on scrap fabric first.

Step 5: Stitch Around the Applique Shapes

Now comes the fun part of How to Shadow Applique.

Carefully stitch around all the applique shapes using a straight stitch.

Take your time and sew slowly around curves and corners.

If your sewing machine has a pivot feature, use it often to keep your stitching clean and accurate.

Tips for Better Stitching

Use Slow Controlled Movements

Sewing slowly helps maintain smooth curves.

Keep Organza Flat

Avoid puckers by gently smoothing the organza as you sew.

Pivot at Corners

Pivoting keeps your lines neat and professional-looking.

Learning proper stitching control is an important part of mastering How to Shadow Applique.

Step 6: Add Echo Stitching

How to Shadow Applique - Add Echo Stitching

To give your project more texture and visual interest, try adding echo stitching around the applique shapes.

Echo stitching follows the outline of the original applique shape while creating extra decorative lines around it.

This technique enhances the dimensional effect of How to Shadow Applique beautifully.

You can use:

  • Straight echo stitching
  • Free motion quilting
  • Decorative stitches
  • Curved quilting lines

Each option gives a slightly different artistic appearance.

When practicing How to Shadow Applique, echo stitching is a wonderful way to add extra detail and movement to your design. Start by sewing a line close to the edge of your applique shape, then continue stitching additional lines evenly spaced around it. This creates a ripple-like effect that draws attention to the layered fabrics underneath the organza.

You can keep the stitching simple with straight lines or experiment with flowing curves for a softer artistic look. Using matching thread creates a subtle finish, while contrasting thread makes the quilting lines stand out more. Echo stitching not only adds beauty but also helps secure the quilt layers together for a polished and professional result.
