Introduction to the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

The Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern is a fun and creative way to bring a little personality to your seasonal sewing projects. In this sewing tutorial, I’ll show you how to use fabric scraps, fusible adhesive and free motion quilting to create a playful turkey applique that can be displayed as wall art or added to another handmade project.

This Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern is ideal for using up colorful fabric scraps from your quilting stash. You can choose traditional autumn colors, experiment with bright fabrics or create a completely unique turkey with your favorite prints.

For this project, I’m turning my finished turkey applique into a piece of fabric wall art using a 12-by-12-inch canvas. However, you can use the same applique process on cushion covers, aprons, sweatshirts and other suitable fabric projects.

The best part is that you can personalize your turkey by changing the feather arrangement, experimenting with the facial features and adding your own creative touches to your Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern.

You’ll also learn a fun free motion quilting technique called thread sketching. This technique uses stitching to outline your applique shapes and gives your turkey a playful, hand-drawn appearance. With the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern, you can practice this technique while creating a unique seasonal decoration.

What Is Included in the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern?

The Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern is available as a free pattern in the Files section of my Faodail Creation Sewing, Quilting & Embroidery Facebook group.

Join the group to access the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern and discover more free applique and quilting patterns. The group is also a place to share your sewing projects, ask questions and connect with other creative people.

Once you’ve downloaded the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern, print or prepare your pattern pieces according to the supplied template. The turkey is made up of several individual shapes, including the body, head, feet, beak and colorful feathers.

Because there are quite a few small pieces, I recommend keeping them organized as you work through the tutorial.

Always check the instructions supplied with your fusible adhesive and glue to ensure that they are suitable for your fabrics and intended project.

Step 1: Download and Prepare the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

The first step in making your Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern project is to download the free template from the Files section of my Facebook group.

Once you have the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern, gather your fabric scraps and decide which colors you want to use for the different sections of your turkey.

I like to get all my scraps out before cutting into larger pieces of fabric. This allows me to use up smaller leftovers and choose coordinating colors without wasting fabric.

Tracing the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

Place the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern on a light box so you can see the outlines clearly. If you don’t have a light box, a bright window can work just as well.

You can use a small piece of masking tape to hold the pattern in place while tracing.

Trace each section onto the paper backing of your fusible adhesive. If the template has several pieces, write the corresponding number or the name of each section on the paper to keep everything organised.

For example, you might label the body, head, feet, beak and individual feathers.

Important: Leave some excess material around each traced shape. Do not cut directly on the lines at this stage. Keeping the pieces slightly larger makes them easier to handle and helps prevent mistakes when positioning the adhesive.

Pay attention to overlapping sections, too. If one feather needs to sit underneath another, allow enough fabric for that overlap when preparing your pieces.

Step 2: Apply Fusible Adhesive to the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern Pieces

Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

For this Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern, I’m using Steam-A-Seam to attach the applique shapes to the background fabric.

Fusible adhesive helps hold the fabric pieces in position and reduces fraying around the raw edges. It is particularly useful when working with small shapes and multiple overlapping sections.

HeatnBond is another option, provided you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your chosen product.

How to Attach the Adhesive

Start by pressing your fabric scraps so they are smooth and free from wrinkles.

Working with the smaller pieces first can help you become familiar with the adhesive before moving on to the larger shapes.

  1. Peel back one side of the adhesive’s paper backing.
  2. Position the exposed adhesive against the wrong side of the fabric.
  3. Check that the adhesive is facing the side you want to bond.
  4. Press according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Allow the adhesive to cool or set as directed before handling the piece further.

Steam-A-Seam has adhesive on both sides, so take care when removing the backing. Check that the adhesive remains attached to the fabric before peeling away the remaining paper.

Repeat this process for the body, head, feet, beak, eyes and feathers in your Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern.

Don’t rush this stage. Small pieces can be fiddly, and checking each one before removing the backing will help prevent the adhesive from sticking to the wrong surface.

Step 3: Prepare the Background for Your Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

Before arranging the turkey, prepare the background fabric for your Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern.

You can use a piece of fabric for wall art, a cushion cover, an apron or another suitable project. The preparation process is similar, although the final construction will depend on the item you choose.

Press the background fabric to remove wrinkles.

Fold the fabric in half and press lightly to create a center crease. Repeat in the opposite direction. When you unfold the fabric, the creases will form a cross that helps you identify the center.

You can also use a suitable friction pen to mark the center point. These marks are designed to disappear with heat, but test the pen on a scrap first and follow the manufacturer’s directions.

A lint roller is useful for removing loose threads and lint before you start placing the applique pieces.

Choosing the Placement

Decide where you want the turkey to sit on your background.

For my Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern, I’m creating a square wall hanging, so I want the design to sit nicely within the center of the fabric.

If you’re decorating a cushion cover or sweatshirt, consider how the finished item will be used and where the design will be most visible.

Keep in mind that the fabric will eventually be attached to the canvas, so leave enough space around the design for the finishing process.

Step 4: Arrange the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern Pieces

Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

This is one of my favourite parts of the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern because you can experiment with the design before permanently pressing everything into place.

Start by positioning the body near the centre of your background fabric.

Next, arrange the feet so they sit underneath the body. The feet should overlap the lower edge of the body slightly to create the correct layered appearance.

Add the head and beak, then begin arranging the feathers.

Layering the Applique Pieces

Work through the numbered pattern pieces, checking how each section fits with the others.

The feathers should overlap where intended, so remember to position the lower pieces first and the upper pieces afterwards.

Move the pieces around until you are happy with the overall shape.

You can trim a feather or adjust the spacing if you want a slightly different appearance. The goal is to create a turkey that reflects your own style.

Don’t worry if the arrangement looks a little different from mine. Handmade applique is a wonderful opportunity to experiment with color and shape.

Adding the Eyes

You can cut eyes from fabric using the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern, or use small googly eyes for a playful finish.

If you plan to use googly eyes, leave them off until after the sewing and free motion quilting are complete. This prevents them from interfering with the stitching and protects them from the heat of your iron.

Once you are happy with the arrangement, follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions to press the fabric pieces securely into place.

Take your time with this stage. A few extra minutes spent checking the layout can make a big difference to the finished design.

Step 5: Prepare the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern for Free Motion Quilting

Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

The next stage of the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern is to add batting behind the background fabric.

I’m using a piece of quilter’s batting measuring approximately 11 × 11 inches. Place it on the reverse side of the fabric, behind the applique design.

The batting adds a little cushioning and provides additional support for the free motion quilting stitches.

Because the batting is relatively thin, it is helpful to have this extra layer behind the applique while stitching.

Set Up Your Sewing Machine

For this project, I’m using my Baby Lock Altair 2, an embroidery and sewing machine that also allows me to enjoy free motion quilting.

I’m using black embroidery thread in the top of the machine and matching thread in the bobbin.

My needle is a size 90/14 Microtex sewing needle.

Set up your machine for free motion quilting according to its instructions. On my machine, this involves selecting the free motion quilting setting.

Check that your machine is correctly configured for the technique you intend to use. Settings and requirements vary between sewing machines, so refer to your manual.

Before stitching the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern, test your thread, needle and settings on a scrap sandwich made from your background fabric and batting.

This gives you an opportunity to check the stitch quality and get comfortable with moving the fabric.

Step 6: Thread Sketch the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

Thread sketching is a fun way to outline the shapes in your Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern while adding texture and personality to the design.

Rather than trying to produce perfectly straight lines, you deliberately stitch around the shapes several times. The slightly irregular lines create a sketch-like effect.

This is also a useful technique for beginners who want to practice free motion quilting without worrying about making every stitch look perfect.

How to Thread Sketch the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

1. Start with the head.

Place the needle at the beginning of the head outline and start stitching. Travel around the shape approximately three times, allowing the lines to overlap loosely.

You don’t need to follow the previous stitching line exactly. The aim is to create a slightly scruffy, hand-drawn outline.

2. Move to the body.

Continue stitching around the body of your turkey. Keep your movements comfortable and try to maintain a steady rhythm.

3. Stitch the feet.

Travel to the feet and outline each one. You can change the direction of the fabric as needed to make the shapes easier to reach.

4. Continue around the feathers.

Move between the different sections of the design, outlining the feathers and other larger shapes.

5. Stitch the beak and smaller details.

Some sections, such as the beak and small decorative pieces, may require you to stop stitching, secure your work as appropriate and trim the thread before moving to the next area.

6. Keep your movements relaxed.

Free motion quilting becomes easier with practice. Find a speed that feels comfortable and focus on coordinating your fabric movement with the machine’s stitching.

7. Finish and inspect your stitching.

When all the sections are outlined, remove any remaining pins and check the design. Trim loose threads and make sure the stitching looks the way you want it to.

The beauty of thread sketching is that the lines do not need to be perfectly even. The irregular stitching gives the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern its character and makes the finished turkey look lively.

If you’re new to free motion quilting, practice on a scrap first. You can also explore my other sewing and quilting tutorials on the Faodail Creation YouTube channel for more ideas and techniques.

Step 7: Finish Your Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern as Wall Art

Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

Once the quilting is complete, you can finish your Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern as a piece of wall art.

For my project, I’m using a 12 × 12-inch canvas from the dollar store. I have also prepared a piece of fabric measuring approximately 16 × 6 inches for wrapping around the canvas.

The exact fabric dimensions may need to be adjusted depending on the thickness of your canvas and how much fabric you need to wrap around the edges.

Attach the Fabric to the Canvas

First, trim any excess batting if necessary and make sure your finished fabric is smooth.

Apply a suitable adhesive to the canvas, following the product instructions. Position the fabric carefully over the canvas and smooth it into place.

I have a separate, in-depth tutorial on how to wrap fabric around a canvas, which is helpful if this is your first time trying this finishing technique.

Take care when applying adhesive and keep it away from the visible front of your fabric.

Once the fabric is securely attached, add the googly eyes if you chose to use them. Apply a small amount of suitable fabric glue and position each eye where you want it.

Allow all adhesives to dry or cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions before displaying your finished wall art.

Your Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern is now ready to display as a fun seasonal decoration.

Creative Ways to Use the Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

Although I have demonstrated this Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern as wall art, you can adapt the design for a variety of other sewing projects.

Here are a few ideas to try.

Cushion covers: Add the turkey to a cushion cover for a colourful seasonal accent in your living room.

Aprons: Create a playful applique apron for cooking, baking or crafting.

Sweatshirts: Use the design to decorate a suitable sweatshirt, making sure your adhesive and stitching method are appropriate for the garment fabric.

Quilt projects: Incorporate the turkey into a seasonal wall quilt or another decorative quilting project.

Fabric decorations: Experiment with different backgrounds and fabric combinations to create your own unique autumn or Thanksgiving decorations.

Always consider how the finished item will be washed or used. Some adhesives and embellishments are better suited to decorative items than frequently washed clothing.

Tips for a Successful Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern

A few simple techniques can make your Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern easier to complete.

  • Organise the pieces: Label the pattern sections and keep small pieces together until you need them.
  • Use fabric scraps: Sort your scraps by colour before choosing the fabrics for the turkey.
  • Leave extra fabric when tracing: Cut the pieces out after applying the adhesive, following the pattern and product instructions.
  • Check overlapping pieces: Arrange the lower layers first so the upper shapes sit correctly.
  • Test your adhesive: Different products have different application requirements. Always follow the instructions supplied.
  • Practise thread sketching: Use spare fabric and batting to become familiar with free motion quilting before stitching the finished project.
  • Embrace imperfect stitching: Thread sketching is meant to look relaxed and slightly irregular.
  • Experiment with placement: Try different feather arrangements and facial expressions before pressing the pieces into place.

Most importantly, enjoy the process. The Turkey Applique Sewing Pattern is an opportunity to use your imagination, practice your sewing skills and create something that reflects your personal style.
