What Is a Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch?
A Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch is a small fabric pouch that uses a zipper closure and clever folding and stitching to create its triangular shape. Once completed, it makes a handy place to keep small accessories, sewing notions, coins, or other little essentials.
The finished pouch can also be customized with decorative stitching, quilting, or trim. Adding a small fabric tab gives you a convenient place to attach a keychain or clip.
One of the best things about this Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch is that it uses relative ly small pieces of fabric, making it ideal for using up leftovers from other sewing and quilting projects.

- Sewing machine.
- Zipper foot.
For my project, I use a Baby Lock Soprano sewing machine, a regular straight stitch, and polyester thread. I use white thread in the bobbin.
You can use your own sewing machine and your preferred sewing thread. A zipper foot is helpful because it allows you to stitch close to the zipper teeth.
A quick note about the batting: The outer fabric is quilted with batting to give the pouch a little structure. Cut your batting to match the outer fabric section.
Step 1: Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch – Prepare and Quilt the Outer Fabric

The first step in making your Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch is to prepare the outer fabric.
Take one of your 8½-inch × 4½-inch cotton fabric pieces and place it on top of the batting. Smooth the fabric so there are no wrinkles or folds.
For my pouch, I use a simple free-motion-style squiggle design to add texture to the fabric. You can choose a design that suits your sewing experience and the look you want to achieve.
Stitch across the fabric to secure it to the batting. If you prefer, you can use straight lines, gentle curves, or another simple quilting pattern.
The aim is to create a quilted outer panel that will become the front of your Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch.
Take your time with this stage. Keeping the fabric smooth will help you achieve a neat finish when you assemble the pouch.
Once the quilting is complete, set this section aside while you prepare to attach the zipper.
Step 2: Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch – Attach the Zipper to the Fabric

Now it is time to start assembling your Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch.
Place the zipper on the quilted outer fabric with the zipper facing down against the right side of the fabric. Make sure the edges are aligned before sewing your Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch together.
Next, take the lining fabric and place it on top of the zipper, with the right side of the lining facing the zipper. You should now have a sandwich consisting of the outer fabric, zipper, and lining.
Use Wonder Clips or sewing pins to hold the layers together. I prefer Wonder Clips because they are quick to use and make it easy to keep the fabric layers aligned when making a Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch.
Attach your zipper foot to the sewing machine and select a regular straight stitch.
Begin stitching along the zipper edge. Remember to backstitch at the beginning to secure your stitches, then sew carefully along the length of the zipper.
Keep the fabric edges aligned as you sew. Take care not to stitch too close to the zipper teeth, as the zipper needs room to open and close smoothly.
When you reach the end, backstitch again to secure the seam.
Your Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch should now have the zipper attached between the quilted outer fabric and the lining. This is an important step in creating a neat and functional Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch that you can enjoy using or giving as a handmade gift.
Step 3: Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch – Press the Fabric and Add Decorative Trim

Open the fabric layers out so the outer fabric and lining sit on opposite sides of the zipper.
Gently pull the zipper area into position and smooth the fabric with your fingers. Press the section with an iron to help the layers lie flatter.
Take care when pressing around the zipper, following the zipper manufacturer’s recommendations and avoiding direct contact with plastic zipper teeth.
This is also a lovely opportunity to personalize your Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch.
I decided to add decorative trim along the zipper area. Position your trim where you would like it to sit and secure it with clips.
Topstitch the fabric and trim in place, sewing carefully along the edge.
You can choose a trim that complements your fabric or use a contrasting colour to make the detail stand out.
If you prefer a simpler finish, you can skip the trim altogether. Your pouch will still look lovely without it.
Once the trim is attached, check that the lining is sitting neatly behind the outer fabric before moving on to the next step.
Step 4: Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch – Fold the Fabric and Sew the Second Side of the Zipper

The next stage is to attach the remaining fabric layers to the other side of the zipper.
First, fold the bottom of the project up towards the top, bringing the fabric into position for the next seam.
Keep the zipper open and positioned so that you can work comfortably with the layers.
Flip the project over and fold the remaining fabric section back into place. Arrange the fabric so the appropriate right sides are facing each other against the zipper.
Use Wonder Clips to secure the layers before sewing.
Take your Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch back to the sewing machine and stitch along the zipper edge using your zipper foot.
Remember to backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam.
Once you have finished sewing, you should have the zipper attached between the outer fabric and lining on both sides.
Unzip the zipper so you can access the fabric more easily. Arrange the lining behind the outer fabric and press the newly sewn section.
If you are adding decorative trim to the other side, position it along the zipper and stitch it in place.
Check that both sides of the zipper open and close properly before continuing.
Step 5: Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch – Sew the Bottom Seam and Make the Fabric Tab

With the zipper and any decorative trim attached, it is time to close the bottom of your Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch.
Zip the zipper closed temporarily while you arrange the fabric, then identify the bottom edge opposite the zipper.
Sew across the bottom of the pouch, using approximately a ¼-inch seam allowance.
Keep your stitches straight and secure the seam at the beginning and end.
Once the seam is complete, trim away excess fabric close to the stitching without cutting through the stitches. This reduces bulk and helps the finished pouch turn neatly.
Now prepare the small fabric tab.
Take your 2-inch × 4-inch piece of fabric and fold it in half lengthwise. Press the fold to create a center crease.
Open the fabric and fold each long raw edge towards the center crease. Press again.
Fold the fabric along the original center crease so that the raw edges are enclosed inside the tab.
Clip the folded layers together and stitch along the open edge to secure them.
You now have a neat fabric tab that can be attached to your Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch. This little detail is particularly useful if you want to add a keychain or clip later.
Step 6: Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch- Shape the Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch

This is where the project starts to take shape!
Before sewing the final seam, make sure the zipper is open. This is important because you will need the opening to turn the pouch right side out later.
Locate the folded sections of the pouch and push the fabric in opposite directions to create the triangular shape.
Arrange the fabric carefully so the folds line up and the pouch sits neatly.
Now decide where you want to position the fabric tab. I like to place mine near one end of the pouch, but you can choose a position that works for your design.
Place the tab between the fabric layers with its raw edges aligned with the raw edges of the seam. The finished folded part of the tab should point towards the inside of the pouch at this stage.
Secure the tab and the surrounding fabric layers with Wonder Clips.
Before sewing, double-check that the zipper is open far enough to allow the pouch to be turned right side out.
Sew along the final edge, keeping the layers aligned as you work. Backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the seam.
Take care when sewing through the folded sections, as several layers of fabric may overlap.
Once the seam is complete, inspect the stitching to make sure all the layers and the tab are securely caught in the seam.
Step 7: Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch – Trim the Seams and Turn the Pouch Right Side Out

You are nearly finished with your Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch!
Trim away the excess fabric around the final seam, taking care not to cut through the stitches. Removing excess bulk helps the corners and folded sections sit more neatly.
If necessary, open the zipper further to give yourself plenty of room to turn the pouch.
Carefully reach through the zipper opening and begin turning the pouch right side out. Gently pull the fabric through the opening, working a little at a time rather than tugging too hard.
Use your fingers to shape the corners and smooth the fabric into place.
Once the pouch is fully turned, arrange the lining inside and make sure it sits neatly.
Zip and unzip your Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch to check that the zipper moves freely. Inspect the seams, tab, and decorative trim to make sure everything is secure.
Your cute triangle zipper pouch is now complete!
Tips for Making a Neat Triangle Fabric Zipper Pouch
A few simple techniques can make your sewing experience easier.
Use clips to control the layers. Wonder Clips are particularly helpful when working with a zipper, lining, batting, and several folded fabric layers.
Press as you go. Pressing the fabric after attaching each side of the zipper helps reduce bulk and gives the finished pouch a neater appearance.
Keep the zipper open before the final seam. This is one of the most important steps. If the zipper is closed when you sew the final seam, you may find that you cannot turn the pouch right side out easily.
Trim carefully. Remove excess seam allowance where appropriate, but never cut through the stitching.
Choose coordinating fabrics. A patterned outer fabric paired with a complementary lining can create a beautiful finish. Decorative trim is optional, so feel free to experiment with different looks.
Test the zipper before finishing. Check that it opens and closes smoothly before you complete the final turning step.
