How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me for Beautiful Quilt Blocks

How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me

How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me is a useful technique to learn if you enjoy quilting but want to spend less time preparing fabric and more time creating beautiful quilt blocks. How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me will help you explore versatile quilting units that can be arranged into simple geometric designs, striking chevrons, diamonds and intricate quilt patterns.

In this sewing and quilting tutorial, I will show you How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me, including how to sew your half square triangle units together, use chain piecing to speed up your sewing, press your seams, trim your dog ears and assemble your pieces into a finished quilt block.

If you watched my previous video, you will already have seen me using my AccuQuilt GO! Me fabric cutter. In that tutorial, I prepared the fabric pieces we will use for this project. If you have not watched it yet, I recommend checking it out before starting this next stage of How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me.

At Faodail Creation, I enjoy sharing creative and empowering stitch techniques that make sewing and quilting more approachable. I am not paid or sponsored to create this video. I simply enjoy showing you useful tools and easy techniques that can help you make the most of your sewing time.

For this project, I am using coral and blue fabrics. These colours provide excellent contrast, helping the half square triangle design stand out clearly. Choosing contrasting fabrics is a helpful tip when learning How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me, as it makes the finished pattern easier to see.

Whether you are a beginner quilter or have been sewing for years, learning How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me can help you develop your quilting skills and create attractive blocks for future projects.

Why How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me Is a Great Quilting Technique

Half square triangles, often abbreviated to HSTs, are square quilting units made from two triangular fabric sections. The two contrasting fabrics create a diagonal seam across the finished square.

These units are popular because they can be arranged in countless ways. Depending on the direction of the triangles, you can create pinwheels, zigzags, chevrons, diamonds and other geometric patterns.

Learning how to sew half square triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me gives you the opportunity to experiment with these designs while practising accurate seam allowances and consistent pressing techniques.

For this particular project, I am using sixteen square units to create one quilt block. Each finished unit measures approximately 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches before the completed block is squared up.

The finished block will measure approximately 8 inches by 8 inches after trimming.

How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me Using Contrasting Fabrics

One of the most important things to consider when making half square triangles is your fabric choice.

You want the two fabrics to look noticeably different when placed next to one another. This contrast helps the diagonal lines remain visible once the pieces are sewn together.

For my project, I am using coral and blue. The colours are different enough that you can easily see where one triangle ends and the other begins.

If you prefer a particularly bold design, consider pairing black with white, yellow with blue, or another combination that creates a strong visual difference.

How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me for a Standout Quilt Design

When choosing fabric for your half square triangles, think about how the finished quilt will look from a distance.

Two fabrics that appear different when held separately might look almost identical when sewn together. This can make your carefully arranged design difficult to see.

Before cutting all your fabric, place your chosen colours side by side. If the difference is clear, you are more likely to achieve the striking geometric effect you want.

You can also experiment with prints, solids and different fabric textures to create your own distinctive quilt designs.

I use a quarter-inch presser foot with a guide on my Baby Lock Soprano. This helps me maintain a consistent seam allowance without having to estimate the distance from the needle to the edge of the fabric.

For my machine setup, I use a 90/14 Microtex needle and polyester thread, with coordinating thread in the bobbin. Choose a needle and thread suitable for your fabric and sewing machine.

Having everything ready before you begin will make How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me easier to follow and help you work through the project without unnecessary interruptions.

Step 1: How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me Starts with Preparing Your Fabric

How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me

The first step in learning How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me is preparing your fabric sections.

In my previous video, I used the AccuQuilt GO! Me to cut the pieces for this project. One of the reasons I enjoy using this fabric cutter is that it makes preparing quilting shapes quicker and easier. When learning How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me, accurate fabric preparation helps make the sewing process smoother.

Accurate cutting is particularly helpful when working with small pieces. When the fabric sections are consistent, it is easier to line them up and sew them together without unnecessary adjustments. This is an important part of How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me, especially when you want your finished quilt blocks to look neat and consistent.

For this project, I have already cut the required sections from my coral and blue fabrics. Each pair will be joined to create a half square triangle unit. As you follow How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me, you will see how these simple fabric pieces come together to form a striking geometric design.

Before sewing, check that you have all your pieces ready. I like to lay everything out on my sewing table so I can work through the units without repeatedly stopping to find another piece.

If you are using two different fabrics, pair one piece of each colour together. The contrasting colours will create the diagonal design in your finished quilt block. Taking a few moments to prepare your fabric properly is a helpful first step in How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me.

Tips for Preparing Fabric for How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me

Take a moment to check your fabric pieces before you start sewing. Make sure the edges are free from loose threads and that you have enough pieces to complete the project.

Organising your fabric pairs beforehand makes chain piecing easier because you can move from one pair to the next without having to stop and search for the correct pieces.

Step 2: How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me Using a Quarter-Inch Seam

How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me

Once your fabric pieces are ready, take one coral piece and one blue piece and place them right sides together.

This means the front sides of the fabrics should face one another, with the wrong sides facing outward.

Line up the edges carefully before placing the fabric under your sewing machine’s presser foot.

For this project, I am using a quarter-inch seam allowance. My Baby Lock Soprano has a quarter-inch foot with a guide, which helps me maintain a consistent seam while sewing.

A consistent seam allowance is important because it affects the size and accuracy of your finished units. If the seam allowance varies between pieces, the squares might not line up neatly when you assemble the quilt block.

How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me More Accurately

Position the fabric against the guide on your presser foot and sew steadily along the required edge.

You do not need to rush, even though the pieces are relatively small. Allow the sewing machine to feed the fabric through without pulling or pushing it excessively.

Repeat this process until all your fabric pairs are ready to sew.

Taking the time to line up your pieces correctly will help you create a more consistent quilt block.

Step 3: How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me Using Chain Piecing

How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me

Chain piecing is one of my favourite techniques when I have lots of small quilting pieces to join. When learning How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me, this simple method can help you sew more efficiently while keeping your fabric pieces organised.

Instead of stopping to cut the thread after every pair, you sew one pair and then feed the next pair through the machine without cutting the connecting thread. This creates a chain of fabric pieces that resembles a little garland.

When learning How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me, chain piecing can make the process much quicker because you repeat the same sewing action for each unit.

Start by placing the first fabric pair under the presser foot. Sew along the required edge using your quarter-inch seam allowance. Maintaining a consistent seam allowance is an important part of How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me, as it helps your units fit together neatly when you assemble the quilt block.

When you reach the end of the first pair, leave a small gap of connecting thread before feeding the next pair into the machine.

Continue sewing each pair in the same way until all your pieces are joined. This repeated process is one of the most useful tips in How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me, particularly when you have several units to complete.

On my Baby Lock Soprano, I use the pivot function, which automatically raises the presser foot when I stop sewing and lowers it again when I resume. This allows me to concentrate on positioning the next fabric pair.

You do not need a machine with this feature to chain piece. You can simply stop at the end of each seam, position the next pair and continue sewing. With a little practice, How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me becomes a straightforward and enjoyable part of your quilting routine.

Make How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me Quicker with Chain Piecing

As you work through the fabric pairs, pay attention to the edges. Make sure each new pair is positioned correctly before you start sewing.

Because the triangles in this project are small, it is worth taking care when feeding them through the machine.

If a piece slips out of position, stop and correct it rather than continuing with a crooked seam.

Once you have sewn the last pair, remove the chain from your machine and take it to your cutting area.

Step 4: How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me and Press Your Seams

How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me

After sewing all your fabric pairs, your pieces will be connected by short lengths of thread.

Use fabric scissors or small thread snips to separate the individual units. Trim the connecting threads carefully without cutting into the fabric or the seam.

You should now have a collection of sewn pieces ready to press.

Pressing is an important part of quilting because it helps your fabric lie flat and makes the next stage of construction easier.

Take your pieces to your ironing board and press them carefully. Follow your preferred quilting method for seam direction, and avoid stretching the fabric while pressing.

A dry iron or an appropriate steam setting can be used depending on your fabric and personal preference. Always take care when handling a hot iron.

Pressing Tips for How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me

When pressing small quilting units, try to lift and lower the iron rather than dragging it back and forth across the fabric.

Dragging the iron can stretch or distort the fabric, particularly when you are working with pieces cut on the bias.

Flat, accurately pressed units are easier to arrange into a consistent quilt block.

Once you have pressed all your pieces, place them in a neat pile so you can trim them and begin arranging your design.

Step 5: How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me and Trim Dog Ears

How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me

When you look at your sewn half square triangles, you may notice small triangular points extending beyond the edges of the square. These are commonly called dog ears. When learning How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me, removing these points is a simple step that helps prepare your units for assembly.

Before assembling the quilt block, trim these small points away with your scissors. As part of How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me, take your time and trim only the excess fabric.

The goal is to make the edges neater without cutting into the seam allowance. Removing the dog ears helps reduce unnecessary bulk where the units meet, making How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me easier when you begin joining the pieces into rows.

Work through each piece carefully and check that the corners are tidy. This small detail can make a difference to the appearance of your finished block and is worth including when following How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me.

Although these little points might seem harmless, several layers of excess fabric can make a difference when you are joining multiple quilting units together.

Check Your Units During How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me

After trimming the dog ears, check that each piece lies flat and that the seams remain secure.

If you notice a seam that has come undone or a section that has not caught properly under the needle, repair it before continuing.

This is also a good time to check that your units are reasonably consistent in size.

Careful preparation now makes it easier to line up the squares in the next stage.

Step 6: How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me into Quilt Block Rows

How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me

Now comes the fun part: arranging your half square triangles to create a quilt design.

Depending on the direction of the coloured sections, you may see a series of triangles, diagonal lines or a chevron pattern.

There is no single correct way to arrange half square triangles. The finished appearance depends on how you position the units and how the colours interact.

For this project, I am using sixteen square units to create one quilt block.

Lay the pieces out on your sewing table before joining them. This allows you to check the pattern and make any changes before the fabric is permanently sewn together.

Once you are happy with the arrangement, begin sewing the units into rows.

Place the pieces for the first row right sides together and sew along the edge using a quarter-inch seam allowance. Continue until the row is complete.

Repeat this process for the remaining rows.

Take care when joining the pieces so the diagonal seams meet as neatly as possible at the intersections.

How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me into a Complete Block

Once all your rows are sewn, lay them out in the correct order again.

Check that the colours and diagonal lines create the pattern you intended.

Place the first two rows right sides together, aligning the edges and matching the seams where possible. Sew them together using your quarter-inch seam allowance.

Continue joining the rows until the full quilt block is assembled.

Press the seams as you work, following your preferred method for managing seam allowances. Matching the intersections carefully will help your finished block look more professional.

If you are new to quilting, do not worry if every seam intersection is not absolutely perfect. Accuracy improves with practice, and each project gives you another opportunity to develop your skills.

Step 7: How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me and Square Up Your Quilt Block

How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me

You have now sewn your half square triangles into a complete quilt block.

For this project, the sixteen units are arranged to create a block measuring approximately 8 inches by 8 inches after squaring up.

Before trimming, allow the block to lie flat and check the edges.

Squaring up means trimming small amounts of excess fabric from the outside edges to make the block neat and even.

Use a quilting ruler and rotary cutter, taking care to keep your fingers away from the blade. Check your measurements before making any cuts.

Your final measurements will depend on the accuracy of your seam allowances, pressing and assembly.

Once the block is squared up, give it a final press and inspect the finished design.

You should now have a neat geometric quilt block made from contrasting coral and blue half square triangles.

What to Make Next After How to Sew Half Square Triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me

One of the best things about learning how to sew half square triangles with AccuQuilt Go Me is discovering how many different designs you can create from the same basic unit.

Try rotating the squares to form chevrons, pinwheels or diamond patterns. You can also combine several blocks to create larger quilt tops.

Experiment with different fabric combinations to see how the design changes. Strong contrasts can create bold geometric patterns, while softer colours give your quilt a more subtle appearance.

Once you become comfortable sewing half square triangles, you may find yourself using them in table quilts, wall hangings, cushions and larger quilting projects.
