This Cat Applique Sewing Pattern is a great way to practise machine appliqué and discover new ways to personalise your projects, including cat-themed quilts and handmade gifts.
You can use this cat appliqué design for much more than wall art. Add it to a tote bag, sweatshirt, apron, cushion cover, or quilt. The basic appliqué technique remains the same, so once you’ve mastered the process with this Cat Applique Sewing Pattern, you can use it in many different projects. Cat Applique Sewing Pattern : Where to Get Your Free Design
Before you begin, you’ll need the cat appliqué pattern. I’ve made the design available for free in my Faodail Creation Sewing, Quilting & Embroidery Facebook group.
Join the group and look under the Files section to find the free Cat Applique Sewing Pattern. You can use the pattern to cut your fabric and create your own appliqué project.
For this tutorial, I’m using black fabric to create the cat silhouette. However, you can experiment with different fabric colours and prints to suit your personal style and make the most of your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern.
A black cat looks particularly striking against a contrasting background, but don’t be afraid to get creative. You could use patterned cotton, colourful prints, or even a selection of fabrics to make a completely different design with your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern.
The most important thing is to choose a fabric that allows the outline of your cat to stand out clearly. This will help your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern look its best in your finished project.
Materials and Supplies for Your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern

Gather your supplies before you begin. Having everything ready makes the process easier and helps you concentrate on cutting, positioning, and stitching your appliqué.

Important: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your fusible web, including the recommended iron temperature and pressing time. Always test unfamiliar materials on a scrap of fabric first.
Choosing the Right Fabric for Your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern
Choose a fabric that is suitable for your intended project. Cotton quilting fabric is a good option because it is easy to handle, presses well, and works nicely for decorative stitching. The Cat Applique Sewing Pattern is ideal for experimenting with different fabrics and creating a design that suits your style.
For the cat itself, I’m using black fabric to create a simple silhouette. You can choose another colour if you prefer, particularly if you’re making an appliqué for a child’s sweatshirt, a tote bag, or a colourful quilt using your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern.
Your background fabric is equally important. A contrasting colour helps the cat stand out and makes the finished stitching easier to see. Choose a background that complements the fabric you have selected for your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern.
If you’re making wall art, choose a fabric that complements the room where you plan to display it. With the right fabric choices, your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern can become a beautiful piece of handmade wall art or a personalised addition to another sewing project.
Cat Applique Sewing Pattern : Step 1 — Trace the Design onto Fusible Web

The first step is to prepare your cat appliqué design using Steam-A-Seam.
Steam-A-Seam is a fusible web product that helps attach one piece of fabric to another. It has an adhesive that can be activated with an iron, making it useful for appliqué projects.
Start by pressing your black fabric so it is smooth and free from wrinkles. A flat surface makes it easier to work accurately.
Take your printed Cat Applique Sewing Pattern and place the Steam-A-Seam over the design. The blank side of the fusible web is the side I’m using to trace the outline.
The pattern should be visible through the material, so you shouldn’t need a light box or window to see the shape.
Using a pencil or suitable marking tool, carefully trace around the entire outline of the cat.
Take your time, particularly around the ears, paws, and tail. These smaller details help define the finished silhouette.
Once you’ve traced the design, cut away the excess fusible web. Leave approximately a quarter of an inch to an inch around the outline of the cat.
Do not cut directly on the traced line at this stage. You’ll cut precisely along the outline after attaching the fusible web to your black fabric.
Cat Applique Sewing Pattern : Step 2 — Prepare Your Background Fabric

Now it’s time to prepare the fabric that will hold your cat appliqué. Preparing your background carefully will help you get the best results from your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern.
If you’re making wall art like mine, this is the fabric that will eventually sit on top of your quilt batting and canvas. If you’re making a tote bag, apron, sweatshirt, or quilt, prepare the section of fabric where you want to position your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern.
Start by pressing your background fabric with an iron. Remove any creases or wrinkles so that the appliqué can sit smoothly.
Next, find the centre of your fabric. Fold the fabric in half and press lightly with your fingers to create a crease. Then fold it in half again in the opposite direction and finger-press the centre.
When you unfold the fabric, you’ll have a cross marking the centre point. You can use a suitable fabric marking pen to make the centre easier to see. In my tutorial, I use a Frixion pen.
Before using a marking pen, test it on a scrap of your fabric and check that it is appropriate for your material. Some marks can reappear under certain conditions, so avoid relying on a pen that may leave permanent marks.
Finding the centre is particularly helpful when you’re creating wall art because it makes it easier to position your cat evenly. Taking the time to prepare your background will help you position your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern neatly and achieve a balanced, professional-looking finish.
Cat Applique Sewing Pattern : Step 3 — Fuse the Design to the Black Fabric

With the outline traced and the background fabric prepared, you can now attach the fusible web to your black fabric. This step prepares your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern for cutting and positioning.
First, carefully separate the paper backing from the Steam-A-Seam. If the adhesive begins to lift, gently encourage it onto the side where you need it. The goal is to position the adhesive against the reverse side of your black fabric so your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern will be ready for application.
Place the prepared fusible web onto the fabric, making sure it lies flat without wrinkles or folds. Using your iron, press the fusible web according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Different fusible products have different temperature and timing requirements, so always check the packaging rather than guessing how long to press.
Once you’ve finished pressing, allow the fabric to cool completely. This gives the adhesive time to set as directed by the manufacturer and makes the next step easier. Avoid moving or pulling at the material while it is still warm, as this could affect the application of your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern.
When the fabric has cooled, you’ll be ready to cut out the cat. Taking care during this stage helps prepare your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern for a neat finish and makes the remaining appliqué steps easier to complete.
Cat Applique Sewing Pattern : Step 4 — Cut Out the Cat Silhouette

This is where your cat design begins to take shape.
Take your fabric scissors and carefully cut around the traced outline of the cat. This time, cut directly along the line.
Work slowly around the entire shape, paying attention to the smaller details and curves.
Keep your scissors controlled and try to make smooth cuts rather than lots of tiny, uneven snips. A clean edge will make the finished appliqué easier to position and stitch.
Once you’ve cut out the complete silhouette, check the outline before moving on.
If you notice any uneven edges, trim them carefully.
Remember that the outside edge of your cat will eventually be secured with decorative stitching. A neat outline gives you a good starting point, although you don’t need to worry about achieving absolute perfection.
After cutting, remove the remaining paper backing from the fusible web. This reveals the adhesive on the reverse side of your cat appliqué.
Be gentle when peeling away the backing, especially around the tail, paws, and ears.
Your cat is now ready to be positioned on the background fabric.
Cat Applique Sewing Pattern : Step 5 — Position and Fuse the Cat

Take your prepared cat silhouette and decide where you want it to sit on your background fabric. Positioning your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern carefully will help create a balanced and attractive finished design.
For my wall art, I like to position the design so it looks balanced within the finished canvas. Use the centre marks you created earlier as a guide. You can move your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern around until you’re happy with its placement.
If necessary, make small adjustments before fusing the design. Once the adhesive has been pressed into place, repositioning may be more difficult. When you’re satisfied with the arrangement, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to fuse your cat appliqué to the background fabric.
Make sure the design lies flat and that the edges are not folded underneath. Allow the appliqué to cool as directed before handling it further. The fusible web helps hold your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern in place while you prepare to stitch around the silhouette.
The decorative stitching is an important part of finishing the appliqué, securing its edges and adding visual detail. At this stage, take a moment to check that you’re happy with the overall appearance of your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern. This is your opportunity to make sure the cat is positioned correctly before moving on to the sewing machine.
Cat Applique Sewing Pattern : Step 6 — Prepare the Batting and Sewing Machine

Before stitching the cat, prepare your fabric and quilt batting.
Because I’m turning my appliqué into wall art, I want to add a layer of quilter’s batting behind the background fabric. This gives the finished piece a quilted appearance and provides some structure.
Place your background fabric on top of the batting, making sure both layers are smooth and aligned.
Use pins to hold the fabric and batting together so they don’t shift while you sew.
Now it’s time to set up your sewing machine.
For this project, I’m using my Baby Lock Altair 2. I’ve been collecting stitch samples and guides for my machine, including decorative stitches, satin stitches, and quilting stitches. Keeping these samples together makes it easier to compare stitches when planning a project.
For the cat appliqué, I’m using a blanket stitch.
The blanket stitch is useful for appliqué because it travels along the edge of the fabric and catches into the appliqué at regular intervals. This helps secure the raw edge while creating a decorative finish.
On my Baby Lock Altair 2, I select the quilting stitches and choose stitch Q12.
I’m using my regular J foot, which has a small black button, along with black embroidery thread in the upper thread and bobbin. I also have a Microtex 90/14 sewing needle fitted.
Machine models and stitch numbers vary, so consult your machine’s manual to find the equivalent stitch and appropriate foot for your own machine.
Before beginning, test your settings on a scrap of fabric and batting.
Cat Applique Sewing Pattern : Step 7 — Stitch Around the Cat with a Blanket Stitch

This is the step that brings your cat appliqué to life. Using the Cat Applique Sewing Pattern, you’ll add a decorative blanket stitch around the design to create a beautiful finish.
The blanket stitch creates a decorative line around the outline of your cat while helping to secure the fabric edges. Before stitching your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern, practise on a scrap of fabric. The blanket stitch takes time to master, and practising helps you understand how the needle moves and how the stitch catches the edge.
I recommend starting with a slow sewing speed. You want to be able to control the fabric and concentrate on keeping the stitching even. Position the fabric so the main line of stitching follows the edge of the cat. The stitch should extend over the edge and catch into the appliqué, then return to the main stitching line.
Work carefully around the silhouette, especially when approaching curves, corners, ears, paws, and the tail. Avoid sewing too quickly. The aim is to maintain consistent stitches and follow the outline as closely as possible while stitching your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern.
If your sewing machine has a pivot function, it can make this process easier. On machines with this feature, the presser foot can lift automatically when you stop sewing, allowing you to reposition the fabric while keeping your hands on the project. Check your machine’s manual to learn how the pivot feature works on your model.
Take extra care around tight curves. Stop when necessary, reposition the fabric, and continue stitching when you’re ready. The blanket stitch may take a little practice, but don’t let that discourage you. As you become familiar with the movement, you’ll find it easier to control the fabric and create a neat finish on your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern.
Once you’ve stitched around the entire cat, inspect the outline and check that the edges are secured. With patience and practice, your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern will have a lovely decorative finish that’s ready for your chosen project.
Cat Applique Sewing Pattern : Step 8 — Finish Your Fabric Wall Art

With your cat appliqué complete, it’s time to turn the project into wall art.
For my finished piece, I’m using a 12 x 12-inch canvas, approximately 11 x 11 inches of quilter’s batting, and a piece of fabric measuring approximately 16 x 16 inches.
These measurements provide the materials for my canvas project, so adjust them if you’re using a different canvas size.
I like to use fabric glue to help hold the batting in place on the canvas. This helps prevent the batting from sliding around while I’m assembling the project.
Apply the glue according to the product instructions and position the batting carefully.
Next, prepare your appliqué fabric for attachment to the canvas. Keep the design centred and the fabric smooth so the finished piece looks neat.
Take care when stretching or positioning the fabric around the canvas, as you want to avoid wrinkles and keep the cat design looking balanced.
If you’re unsure how to attach fabric to a canvas, I’ve created a separate tutorial covering that process. You can link to it here:
How to Attach Fabric to Canvas https://youtu.be/4_4OKObmYQs
Once the fabric is attached securely, check the front of your wall art. Smooth out any visible wrinkles and make sure the appliqué is displayed as intended.
Your cat appliqué wall art is now ready to display or give as a handmade gift.
Creative Ways to Use Your Cat Applique Sewing Pattern
One of my favourite things about appliqué is that the same design can be used in so many different ways.
Although I’ve turned my cat into wall art, you can adapt the Cat Applique Sewing Pattern for a variety of sewing projects.
Here are a few ideas to inspire your next make.
Add a Cat Applique to a Tote Bag
A plain tote bag is a great place to use an appliqué design. Position your cat on the front of the bag and stitch around the outline to create a personalised accessory.
Decorate a Sweatshirt or Apron
You can also use the design to decorate a sweatshirt or apron. Choose suitable fabric and fusible products for the garment, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application and care.
Always consider how the finished item will be washed and used when choosing your materials.
Create Cat-Themed Quilting Projects
If you enjoy quilting, try incorporating your cat appliqué into a quilt block or a larger decorative panel.
You could experiment with different background fabrics, add decorative quilting, or combine the cat with other appliqué shapes.
Make Personalised Handmade Gifts
A cat appliqué can be a lovely way to create a personalised gift for someone who loves cats.
Use the design on a cushion cover, decorative panel, or another suitable fabric project. Changing the fabric colours can give the same pattern a completely different look.
Cat Applique Sewing Pattern : Troubleshooting Tips for Beginners

If you’re new to machine appliqué, a few simple precautions can help you achieve a better result.
The fusible web doesn’t stick properly. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the correct iron temperature, pressing time, and cooling period. Different products may require different settings.
The fabric moves while stitching. Make sure the appliqué is properly fused and that your fabric and batting are secured. Practise on a scrap to check your machine settings.
The blanket stitch looks uneven. Reduce your sewing speed and concentrate on following the outline. Practising on scrap fabric is one of the best ways to improve your control.
The edges look untidy. Check that you’ve cut the silhouette carefully and that the blanket stitch catches the edge consistently. Take extra care around curves and narrow sections.
The finished wall art looks wrinkled. Press your background fabric before applying the appliqué and take care when attaching the fabric to the canvas.
Remember that sewing skills develop with practice. Every project gives you an opportunity to learn something new and become more confident with your machine.
