Placemat

Half Square triangle placemat

by Faodail Creation Sewing and Quilting – Sewing and Quilting Tutoria

A simple and fun project that involves sewing two contrasting fabrics into squares, cutting them diagonally, and arranging them into a geometric pattern.

What you’ll need to make one placemat:

I’ll refer to the colors that I use you can use whatever colors you would like just so my instructions are consistent going through and you can follow along

One medium value pattern teal fabric 7″ x 7″ square

One grey pattern fabric 7″ x 7″ square

Two light value pattern teal 7″ x 7″ square

Four plain teal fabric 7″ x 7″ square

quilt batting 21 ” x 21″ square

Cotton fabric for backing 21″ x 21″ square

Approx 74″ x 2 1/4″ for the binding

Instructions:

You will be matching a plain teal 7 ” x 7 ” with one pattern fabric

place a plain teal with a pattern right sides together and sew all the way around the block a quarter of an inch

Once you have sewed all around the section cut with a rotary cutter from one diagonal to the other and then again on the other two diagonals try not to move the pieces when you’re doing this.

Complete the other three sets of squares matching a pattern with the plain

you will end up with 16 finished half square triangles, press them all out with an iron. Becareful not to stretch them!

Row one, sew them together right sides together

Row two, sew them together right sides together

Row three, sew them together right sides together

Row four, sew them together right sides together

Once again press everything gently being careful not to stretch everything out. The sew rows one and two together.

Sew row three to row two

Sew the final row

Create a quilt sandwich, by attaching the backing, batting and quilt top together. Then free motion quilt the placemat.

Now you can attach the binding. Once finished the placemat will be approx 16″ x 16″

What you’ll need to make one placemat:

One 3″ x 3″ Teal

Two 3″ x 1″ Dark Green

Two 3 3/4″ x 1″ Beige

Two 1 1/2″ x 3 5/8″ Dark Green

Two 1 1/2 x 1 1/2″ Teal

Two 4 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ Light Green

Two 6 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ Light Green

Two 7 1/4″ x 1″ Beige

Two 4″ x 6″ Dark Green

Two 5″ x 14 1/4″ Dark Green

15″ x 15″ backing

15″ x 15″ Batting

2 1/4″ x 80″ binding

Starting with the 3″ x 3″ square sew the 2″ x 1″ Dark green sections

Press the sections into place and line up the next pieces which will be the 3 3/4″ x 1″ beige. Sew into place and press

Line up the 3 5/8″ Dark green sections and sew into place, press once complete.

Sew the small teal square 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ to the 4 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ Light Green first.

First attach the 6 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ Light Green

Then attach the two small teal square 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ to the 4 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ Light Green

Now attach Two 7 1/4″ x 1″ Beige

Lets start building out the place mat mine are pretty much square you can make them as big or small as you would like them to be.

I’m going to attach the 4″ x 6″ to either side

Then attach the 5 ” x 14 1/4″ sections

I cut mine down to 14 ” x 14″ and created a quilt sandwich. This is layering my top with quilt batting and backing make sure these pieces are an inch bigger so 15″ x 15″ should be perfect.

Create a free motion quilting design on your placemat

Now add your binding, I use a 2 1/4″ width, you’ll have to cut two of these strips and attach together. It will be around 80″ long so there will be more than enough.

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed making it.

Sewing a placemat using an hour glass quilt block

by Faodail Creation Sewing and Quilting – Sewing and Quilting Tutorials

You can use my previous blog post which will show you how to make the hour glass quilt block. The finished hour glass quilt block is made using two 5 3/4″ contrasting squares. The finished size of the hour glass quilt block will be 4 1/2″.

One place mat will require the following:

  • Four 4 1/2″ hour glass quilt blocks
  • One 4 1/2″ light colored square
  • Four 4 1/2″ dark colored squares
  • Four 1 1/2″ medium colored strips to the width of fabric (WOF)
  • Two 14″ x 3 1/2″ dark colored fabric
  • two 1 1/2″ light colored small rectangle.
  • For the backing and batting 22″ wide by 15 1/2″
  • For the binding 2 1/4 by 80 ” there will be left over.

The colors I use are, Dark Green, light green, tourquise, beige.

We will completed the centre and work our way out. Take two 4 1/2″ squares (I use turquoise) and one of your finished half square triangles sew these together into a row. Make sure that your hour glass is pointing up and down.

The next row is two hour glass blocks and your light colored square. I used a light green. Make sure your hour glasses are now going across left to right.

The third row is the same as the first

Then sew all the rows together.

Now we are going to build the placemat out. First we will use the 1 1/2″ strip. I use a light green for this section to contrast the dark looking block. Attach the left side and the right then the top and bottom.

I cut both the 14″ x 3 1/2″ dark colored fabric in half, and will sew in the centre of each the 1 1/2″ turquoise section into the centre.

Attach these sections to each side of the placemat.

Now create a quilt sandwich, place the top between the batting and the backing and do a free motion quilting design to attach all the layers together.

Cut away the excess batting and backing fabric and attach the binding and you’ll have one placemat

The finished size of the placemat is 19 1/2″ wide by 14 ” high.

Heart Placemat Tutorial: Sew a Lovely Gift for Your Loved Ones

by Faodail Creation Sewing and Quilting – Sewing and Quilting Tutorials

Learn how to sew a heart-shaped placemat with this easy and fun tutorial. This DIY project is perfect for Valentine’s Day or any occasion to show your love. Follow the step-by-step instructions and make a lovely gift for your loved ones

What you need to make one Valentines Heart Placemat

One 5″ x 5″ Pink Square

One 5″ x 5″ White Square

Two 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ pink squares

Four 2″ x 2″ white squares

Two 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ white strips

Two 4″ x 12 1/4″ in white

14 1/4 ” x 17 1/4″ for batting

14 1/4 ” x 17 1/4″ for backing fabric

60″ x 2 1/2 ” for binding one placemat

First i’m going to start you off with sewing the half square triangles for sewing a valentines heart placemat. Take one 5″ white square and place on top of a pink 5″ square. Mark a line from corner to corner, then next to the center mark you are going to make one on either side of this line quarter inch away

You will sew along the left side line and the right hand line joining the pink square and the white square together. Once they are sewn cut along the center line to reveal two half square triangles.

Cut 2 pink 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 ” blocks and 4 white 2″ x 2″ blocks. Place one 2″ square on each of the two sides on a 4 1/2 ” pink square. Draw a line down the centers of each white square. You are basically replacing the corners of the pink square with white ones. Sew down the lines that you have marked

cut each white square off at 1/4 inch to remove bulk and open out to reveal the new corner.

You now have a heart, sew the top two blocks together, then the bottom two

Then join up the two rows, you now have a block that is 8 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ this is the time that we can now start to build out the size we want for a place mat. At the top and bottom of the heart cut out two sections of fabric that are 2 1/2 x 8 1/2. sew them onto the heart and press.

Lets build out the side panels, cut two 4″ x 12 1/4″ in white. The finished size of this placemat will be 12 1/4 ” tall by 15 1/4″ wide you can make it bigger or smaller by making these panels bigger or smaller.

cut a section of batting bigger than the top of the placemat. I like to go 2″ bigger. Place all the section together like a quilt sandwich. Top pieced section first then batting then backing fabric. Free motion all the pieces together. Once quilted, cut away the excess of the batting and backing so it all lines up to the pieced heart section. Bind the placemat, this will take one 60″ x 2 1/2 ” I like to sew with the machine the binding onto the front then hand stitch onto the back.
