What you need to make one Valentines Heart Placemat
One 5″ x 5″ Pink Square
One 5″ x 5″ White Square
Two 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ pink squares
Four 2″ x 2″ white squares
Two 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ white strips
Two 4″ x 12 1/4″ in white
14 1/4 ” x 17 1/4″ for batting
14 1/4 ” x 17 1/4″ for backing fabric
60″ x 2 1/2 ” for binding one placemat
First i’m going to start you off with sewing the half square triangles for sewing a valentines heart placemat. Take one 5″ white square and place on top of a pink 5″ square. Mark a line from corner to corner, then next to the center mark you are going to make one on either side of this line quarter inch away

You will sew along the left side line and the right hand line joining the pink square and the white square together. Once they are sewn cut along the center line to reveal two half square triangles.
Cut 2 pink 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 ” blocks and 4 white 2″ x 2″ blocks. Place one 2″ square on each of the two sides on a 4 1/2 ” pink square. Draw a line down the centers of each white square. You are basically replacing the corners of the pink square with white ones. Sew down the lines that you have marked

cut each white square off at 1/4 inch to remove bulk and open out to reveal the new corner.

You now have a heart, sew the top two blocks together, then the bottom two

Then join up the two rows, you now have a block that is 8 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ this is the time that we can now start to build out the size we want for a place mat. At the top and bottom of the heart cut out two sections of fabric that are 2 1/2 x 8 1/2. sew them onto the heart and press.

Lets build out the side panels, cut two 4″ x 12 1/4″ in white. The finished size of this placemat will be 12 1/4 ” tall by 15 1/4″ wide you can make it bigger or smaller by making these panels bigger or smaller.
cut a section of batting bigger than the top of the placemat. I like to go 2″ bigger. Place all the section together like a quilt sandwich. Top pieced section first then batting then backing fabric. Free motion all the pieces together. Once quilted, cut away the excess of the batting and backing so it all lines up to the pieced heart section. Bind the placemat, this will take one 60″ x 2 1/2 ” I like to sew with the machine the binding onto the front then hand stitch onto the back.
