You can use my previous blog post which will show you how to make the hour glass quilt block. The finished hour glass quilt block is made using two 5 3/4″ contrasting squares. The finished size of the hour glass quilt block will be 4 1/2″.
One place mat will require the following:
- Four 4 1/2″ hour glass quilt blocks
- One 4 1/2″ light colored square
- Four 4 1/2″ dark colored squares
- Four 1 1/2″ medium colored strips to the width of fabric (WOF)
- Two 14″ x 3 1/2″ dark colored fabric
- two 1 1/2″ light colored small rectangle.
- For the backing and batting 22″ wide by 15 1/2″
- For the binding 2 1/4 by 80 ” there will be left over.
The colors I use are, Dark Green, light green, tourquise, beige.
We will completed the centre and work our way out. Take two 4 1/2″ squares (I use turquoise) and one of your finished half square triangles sew these together into a row. Make sure that your hour glass is pointing up and down.
The next row is two hour glass blocks and your light colored square. I used a light green. Make sure your hour glasses are now going across left to right.
The third row is the same as the first
Then sew all the rows together.
Now we are going to build the placemat out. First we will use the 1 1/2″ strip. I use a light green for this section to contrast the dark looking block. Attach the left side and the right then the top and bottom.
I cut both the 14″ x 3 1/2″ dark colored fabric in half, and will sew in the centre of each the 1 1/2″ turquoise section into the centre.
Attach these sections to each side of the placemat.
Now create a quilt sandwich, place the top between the batting and the backing and do a free motion quilting design to attach all the layers together.
Cut away the excess batting and backing fabric and attach the binding and you’ll have one placemat
The finished size of the placemat is 19 1/2″ wide by 14 ” high.
