In this tutorial, you will learn how to make a scrappy placemat using green and teal fabric scraps. This is a great way to use up your leftover pieces of fabric and create a beautiful and unique table setting.
What you’ll need to make one placemat:
One 3″ x 3″ Teal
Two 3″ x 1″ Dark Green
Two 3 3/4″ x 1″ Beige
Two 1 1/2″ x 3 5/8″ Dark Green
Two 1 1/2 x 1 1/2″ Teal
Two 4 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ Light Green
Two 6 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ Light Green
Two 7 1/4″ x 1″ Beige
Two 4″ x 6″ Dark Green
Two 5″ x 14 1/4″ Dark Green
15″ x 15″ backing
15″ x 15″ Batting
2 1/4″ x 80″ binding
Starting with the 3″ x 3″ square sew the 2″ x 1″ Dark green sections
Press the sections into place and line up the next pieces which will be the 3 3/4″ x 1″ beige. Sew into place and press
Line up the 3 5/8″ Dark green sections and sew into place, press once complete.
Sew the small teal square 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ to the 4 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ Light Green first.
First attach the 6 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ Light Green
Then attach the two small teal square 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ to the 4 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ Light Green
Now attach Two 7 1/4″ x 1″ Beige
Lets start building out the place mat mine are pretty much square you can make them as big or small as you would like them to be.
I’m going to attach the 4″ x 6″ to either side
Then attach the 5 ” x 14 1/4″ sections
I cut mine down to 14 ” x 14″ and created a quilt sandwich. This is layering my top with quilt batting and backing make sure these pieces are an inch bigger so 15″ x 15″ should be perfect.
Create a free motion quilting design on your placemat
Now add your binding, I use a 2 1/4″ width, you’ll have to cut two of these strips and attach together. It will be around 80″ long so there will be more than enough.
