Why Make a Sew DIY Charging Station?

A homemade charging holder is a practical accessory that makes charging your phone more convenient.
Instead of leaving your phone hanging from its charging cable or resting on a nearby surface, this sew DIY Charging Station creates a small fabric pocket that supports your phone while it charges.
The design is simple, making it suitable for beginner sewists who want to practice sewing straight lines, attaching binding, creating fabric handles, and turning a project right side out.
Benefits of a Sew DIY Charging Station
- Keeps your phone off the floor while charging.
- Provides a convenient place to hold your phone.
- Uses basic sewing supplies.
- Can be made with leftover fabric.
- Allows you to customize the size.
- Makes a practical handmade gift.
- Is suitable for beginners learning to sew.
You can customize your sew DIY Charging Station using coordinating fabrics, quilting cotton, or decorative prints to match your home.
Materials Needed for Your Sew DIY Charging Station
Before starting your sew DIY Charging Station, gather all your fabric and sewing supplies.
Sew DIY Charging Station – Fabric Requirements
You will need:
- Two pieces of fabric measuring 4½ inches × 9 inches.
- Two pieces of fabric measuring 5 inches × 4½ inches.
- One piece of fabric measuring 1½ inches × 6 inches for binding.
- One piece of fabric measuring 2½ inches × 10 inches for the handle.
Interfacing and Stabilizer
For this sew DIY Charging Station, I am using foam interfacing to give the phone holder additional stability.
You can substitute:
- Fusible fleece.
- Batting.
- Lightweight foam stabilizer.
- Another suitable stabilizer you already have in your sewing room.
I also use fusible interfacing for the pocket section.
The stabilizer helps the holder maintain its shape while supporting the weight of your phone.

Sew DIY Charging Station: Seven Easy Sewing Steps
Follow these seven steps to make your own sew DIY Charging Station.
Step 1: Sew DIY Charging Station – Prepare the Pocket Fabric

For the first section of your sew DIY Charging Station, you will be making the pocket that holds your cell phone.
Take your two pieces of fabric measuring 5 inches × 4½ inches.
Remember that the 5-inch measurement will run vertically, while the 4½-inch measurement will run horizontally.
Begin by attaching fusible interfacing to the wrong side of one fabric piece.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your interfacing, using the appropriate temperature and pressing time.
Once the interfacing has been attached, place the second piece of fabric behind it.
You should now have your two pocket fabric pieces together, with the interfacing providing additional stability.
Sew the Pocket Pieces Together
Take your pocket fabric to the sewing machine.
Using a scant quarter-inch seam allowance, stitch along the top edge of the pocket.
A scant quarter-inch seam is slightly smaller than a regular quarter-inch seam allowance.
This small seam will help keep the fabric layers together while you prepare the binding.
Step 2: Sew DIY Charging Station – Attach the Pocket Binding

Now it is time to add binding to your sew DIY Charging Station pocket.
Take your binding fabric measuring 1½ inches × 6 inches.
Position the binding along the top edge of your pocket, making sure the fabric is aligned properly.
The binding should extend slightly beyond the edges of the pocket.
Stitch the Binding to the Pocket
Place the binding fabric against the top of the pocket and stitch using a quarter-inch seam allowance.
Once you have sewn the binding into place, trim away any excess threads.
Next, fold the binding over the top edge of the pocket.
Turn it toward the back of the fabric and fold it again so that the raw edges are enclosed.
This creates a neat finished edge.
Use Wonder Clips to hold the binding securely in place.
Take the pocket back to your sewing machine and stitch the binding down.
You now have a beautifully finished pocket ready to attach to your sew DIY Charging Station.
This binding is particularly important because the pocket will experience regular wear and tear as you insert and remove your phone.
Step 3: Prepare the Main Body of Your Sew DIY Charging Station

For the main body of your sew DIY Charging Station, take one of your fabric pieces measuring 4½ inches × 9 inches.
Attach your foam interfacing or stabilizer to the wrong side of this fabric.
If you are using fusible foam, follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
Once the stabilizer has been attached, trim away any excess material that extends beyond the fabric.
This will help keep your project neat and manageable.
Add the Second Fabric Layer
Take your second piece of fabric measuring 4½ inches × 9 inches.
Place it behind the stabilized fabric.
You should now have your main charging holder fabric layered together.
Take this section to your sewing machine and stitch around the edges using a scant quarter-inch seam allowance.
This stitching helps prevent the layers from shifting while you assemble the rest of your sew DIY Charging Station.
At this stage, your main body and pocket are prepared.
Step 4: Sew DIY Charging Station – Make the Fabric Handle

The handle is an important part of your sew DIY Charging Station because it allows the finished holder to hang over your charging plug.
Take your fabric measuring 2½ inches × 10 inches.
Place the fabric on your ironing board with the wrong side facing upward.
Fold and Press the Handle
Begin by folding the fabric in half lengthwise.
Press the fold using your iron.
Open the fabric again.
Fold one long edge toward the center and press.
Repeat this process with the opposite long edge.
Finally, fold both sides toward the center so that the raw edges are completely enclosed.
Press the handle thoroughly to help maintain its shape.
You should now have a long, narrow fabric strip with all the raw edges hidden inside.
Stitch the Handle
Take the handle to your sewing machine.
Stitch a row along each long edge.
These two rows of stitching help keep the handle securely folded while also giving it a decorative finish.
Your handle is now ready to attach to your sew DIY Charging Station.
Step 5: Sew DIY Charging Station – Attach the Handle and Pocket

This is where your sew DIY Charging Station starts coming together.
Place your main charging holder fabric on your work surface.
Decide how long you want the handle to be.
You can adjust the handle depending on the size of your charging plug and how you want the holder to hang.
Position the Handle
Place the handle at the top of the main fabric section.
Make sure the handle is not twisted.
You can position the handle approximately ¾ inch to 1 inch away from the outer edges, depending on your preference.
Remember that you will need a seam allowance when sewing the outer edges together.
Do not place the handle directly against the edge of the fabric.
Use Wonder Clips to hold the handle in position.
Position the Pocket
Take your finished pocket and position it on the front of your main charging holder.
The bound edge should be at the top.
Make sure the pocket is positioned straight and that the fabric edges are aligned.
Clip the pocket into place.
At this stage, your sew DIY Charging Station should have:
- The stabilized main body.
- The pocket positioned on the front.
- The handle attached at the top.
You are now ready to assemble the complete holder.
Step 6: Sew Your Sew DIY Charging Station Together
Take your remaining piece of fabric measuring 4½ inches × 9 inches.
Place it over the assembled charging holder with the right sides of the fabric facing together.
The handle and pocket should now be sandwiched between the two main fabric pieces.
Use Wonder Clips to hold everything together.
Leave an Opening for Turning
Before sewing, mark an opening along one edge.
I recommend leaving approximately 2½ inches open.
This opening will allow you to turn the entire project right side out after stitching.
It is helpful to position the opening away from the pocket binding so that the finished seams are easier to manage.
Stitch Around the Holder
Take your project to the sewing machine.
Stitch around the outside edges using a quarter-inch seam allowance.
When you reach the section where the pocket binding is located, sew over that area several times to reinforce the stitching.
The pocket will experience regular use, so reinforcing this section helps prevent the seams from coming loose.
Remember to stop stitching before you close the turning opening.
Trim the Excess Fabric
Once you have completed the stitching, carefully trim away excess fabric around the edges.
Be careful not to cut through your stitching.
You can also trim the corners slightly to reduce bulk.
This will help create a neater finish when you turn your sew DIY Charging Station right side out.
Step 7: Turn, Press, and Finish Your Sew DIY Charging Station

You are almost finished!
Take your project and carefully turn it right side out through the opening you left in the seam.
Use your fingers to gently push out the corners.
Take your charging holder to the ironing board.
Press the Charging Holder
Turn the fabric edges of the opening inward.
Press them carefully so that they sit neatly together.
Press around the entire outside edge of your sew DIY Charging Station.
This helps flatten the seams and gives your project a professional finish.
Close the Turning Opening
Take the charging holder back to your sewing machine.
Using a scant quarter-inch seam allowance, stitch around the outer edge.
This final row of stitching closes the turning opening and helps keep everything securely in place.
You now have a finished sew DIY Charging Station ready to use!
How to Use Your Sew DIY Charging Station
Using your finished sew DIY Charging Station is incredibly easy.
First, plug your phone charger into a suitable wall outlet.
Place the handle of your charging holder over the charging plug.
Next, connect your phone to the charging cable.
Place your phone inside the pocket.
The holder should support your phone while it charges.
In my tutorial, I am using a Samsung phone.
As you can see, this phone is quite wide, but it fits comfortably inside the pocket.
The holder allows the phone to sit neatly while charging.
Does the Sew DIY Charging Station Fit Different Phones?
Yes, you can customize your sew DIY Charging Station to accommodate different phones.
If you have a smaller phone, you may want to reduce the width of the pocket.
If you have a larger phone, you may prefer to make the pocket slightly wider.
Always check the dimensions of your phone before cutting your fabric.
You should also check that the finished holder fits comfortably over your charging plug.
Helpful Tips for Making a Sew DIY Charging Station
Here are a few additional tips to help you achieve the best results with your sew DIY Charging Station.
Choose the Right Stabilizer
Foam stabilizer gives the holder additional structure.
However, fusible fleece or batting can also work well.
If you prefer a softer holder, you may want to experiment with different stabilizers.
Reinforce the Pocket Binding
The pocket is the section that will experience the most movement.
Reinforcing the binding with additional stitching helps make your sew DIY Charging Station more durable.
Customize the Handle
You can adjust the handle length depending on your charging plug.
Just remember to leave enough fabric for the seam allowance.
Test the Size Before Sewing
If you are making this project for a particularly large phone, measure your phone first.
This is especially helpful if you want to make several sew DIY Charging Station holders as handmade gifts.
