How to Make a Quilt Label on the Baby Lock Soprano is a fun and meaningful way to personalize your handmade quilts. Whether you want to include a heartfelt message, a special date, or a name, creating a quilt label adds that perfect finishing touch.
As a Canadian Baby Lock Educator, Iโve worked with many Baby Lock machines over the years and fun fact I actually owned the Baby Lock Soprano long before I partnered with Baby Lock. Itโs truly an amazing machine! The built-in lettering feature makes it easy to stitch professional-looking text directly onto your fabric no embroidery machine required.
In this tutorial, Iโll walk you through how to prepare your fabric, set up your Baby Lock Soprano for lettering, and create your own custom quilt label that adds charm, meaning, and personality to your finished quilt.
A quilt label is more than just a decorative detail it becomes a permanent record of the love, creativity, and time that went into making your quilt. Many quilters use labels to include their name, the quilt makerโs name, the date the quilt was completed, or the story behind the design. Years from now, that small piece of fabric can help preserve the memories connected to your handmade creation.
The Baby Lock Soprano makes this process simple by allowing you to create beautiful lettering directly on your fabric. This is especially helpful for quilters who want a personalized finish without needing a separate embroidery machine. With a few easy adjustments, you can choose your lettering style, position your design, and stitch a label that looks polished and professional.
In this tutorial, Iโll also share helpful tips for choosing your fabric, stabilizing your label, and making sure your lettering stitches beautifully. Whether this is your first quilt label or you are looking for new ideas to enhance your quilting projects, this guide will help you create a meaningful finishing touch that makes every quilt even more special.

Having everything ready before you start will make the process smoother and more enjoyable.
Step 1: Prepare Your Fabric and Stabilizer to Make a Quilt Label
Before you begin creating your quilt label, it is important to prepare your fabric and stabilizer correctly. Taking a few extra minutes during this step will help ensure your lettering stitches smoothly and your finished label looks professional and polished.
Start by choosing a fabric that coordinates with your quilt. A lightweight cotton fabric is a great choice because it is easy to stitch on and blends well with most quilt designs. You can choose a fabric that matches your quilt colors or select a contrasting fabric to make your label stand out as a special feature.
Cut your fabric slightly larger than the final size you want your quilt label to be. Having extra space around the edges makes it easier to hoop, position, and trim your label neatly once the lettering is complete.
Next, apply a stabilizer to the back of your fabric. Stabilizer provides support while your machine stitches the lettering and helps prevent puckering, stretching, or uneven stitches. For the Baby Lock Soprano, using a suitable stabilizer will help your lettering maintain a clean and professional appearance.
Press your fabric before stitching to remove any wrinkles or creases. A smooth surface allows the machine to feed the fabric evenly and helps your lettering appear straight and consistent.
Once your fabric and stabilizer are prepared, you are ready to move on to setting up your Baby Lock Soprano for lettering. Taking the time to properly prepare your materials will make the stitching process easier and help you create a beautiful quilt label that will last for years.

๐งต Step 2: Choose the Font and Access Lettering Mode
On your Baby Lock Soprano, open the lettering options. For this tutorial, weโll use the handwriting font, which gives a charming, italic look perfect for a handmade quilt label.
To select it:
- Press the font button twice until you see the italic handwriting option.
- Refer to page 18 of your Quick Reference Guide to find the correct stitch numbers for each letter.
Each letter has a corresponding number that youโll type into your machine.

โ๏ธ Step 3: Enter Your Text to Make a Quilt Label
Now comes the fun part typing your message! For this example, letโs say your label reads:
โThis quilt was made for my cat on April 2018.โ
To enter the letters:
- Find the number for each character in the guide (e.g., T = 20, h = 34, i = 35, etc.)
- Enter each number using the keypad on your Baby Lock Soprano.
- To add a space, press 101 between words.
Continue until your full message appears on the screen.
Tip: For your first line, start your lettering along your crease line to ensure even placement.

๐ชก Step 4: Stitch the First Line of Your Quilt Label
Once your text is ready:
- Attach Presser Foot N, which the Baby Lock Soprano will prompt you to use for lettering.
- Lower your presser foot and start stitching the machine will automatically write your letters from top to bottom, not left to right.
Gently guide the fabric as it moves, but donโt pull or push it. Let the machine do the work while you keep the fabric straight.
๐งต Step 5: Stitch Additional Lines of Text
After finishing your first line, itโs time to add the next. You can delete the previous text from the machine and type your next phrase, such as โMade for me and my cat.โ
Align the second line with the next crease line on your fabric. The spacing between lines might take a bit of trial and error this is where your handmade charm shines! Donโt worry about perfect spacing; slightly uneven lines add character and authenticity to your quilt label.
If youโre unsure about placement, do a practice run on scrap fabric first.

Step 6: Remove Jump Threads and Clean Up
Once all your lettering is stitched, itโs time for cleanup. Youโll notice jump threads connecting letters or words. These are normal and easy to remove. Taking a few minutes to carefully clean up these small details will help your quilt label look neat, professional, and ready to be attached to your finished quilt.
Use small embroidery scissors to trim the threads carefully. Take your time while trimming to avoid accidentally cutting the fabric or the stitches you want to keep. It is best to gently lift the jump thread away from the fabric before cutting so you can see exactly where the thread needs to be removed.
A lint roller can help lift away any leftover fibers for a clean finish. You can also gently brush away loose threads with your fingers or use a soft fabric brush if needed. This final cleanup step can make a big difference in the overall appearance of your quilt label.
For stabilizer removal, you have two choices:
- Tear away the excess stabilizer around the lettering, or
- Leave it on if your quilt label will be sewn onto the back of the quilt (it wonโt cause harm).
If you decide to remove the stabilizer, carefully tear it away around the edges of the lettering. Avoid pulling too aggressively, as you want to protect the stitches and keep the fabric smooth. Some stabilizers are easier to remove than others, so working slowly will give you the best results.
Once the extra threads and stabilizer have been cleaned up, take a moment to admire your finished lettering. Your custom quilt label is now ready to add a personal story and handmade touch to your quilt. A beautifully finished label not only completes your project but also helps preserve the memories behind the quilt for years to come.
๐ชก Step 7: Attach the Label to Your Quilt
You can now attach your finished label to your quilt! Options include:
- Hand-stitching it to the quilt backing
- Machine stitching around the edges
- Framing it with decorative fabric or embroidery stitches
Your Baby Lock Soprano quilt label is complete a personal and professional detail that makes your quilt truly special.
