Discover how to make a stunning hour glass quilt block with this simple and quick tutorial. This versatile block can be used to create many different quilt patterns and designs. Follow the easy steps and sew your own hour glass quilt block today.
You will need two square pieces of fabric. To make this hour glass quilt block more effective I would recommend using two highly contrasting pieces of fabric.
The size I used for this written hour glass quilt block tutorial is 5 3/4″ squares.
Place both squares right sides together.
Now we will mark a diagonal line from one corner to the other. I used a regular pencil to mark this line. I also marked on my lighter color of fabric to make it easier on myself.
Using this centre line we, make another line parallel to that line a quarter of an inch away. You can do this using a quilting ruler. The dots on the ruler represent 1/4 inch.
Using the centre line again, make another line parallel to the centre a quarter of an inch away.
Sew along the two outer lines that we marked. DO NO SEW ALONG THE CENTRAL LINE.
Once the two lines are sewn, cut along the central line with your rotary cutter.
Cut away the dog ears at the end of each of the half square triangles.
Place the two half square triangles on top of each other making sure you have the opposite color touching each other. in my example have a beige touching a green half square.
We are going to make the same three markings that we did before. Place the markings on the other diagonal that doesn’t have a sewn line.
Sew along the two outer lines, then cut at the central line once sewn. You will end up with two hour glass blocks.
Cut away the dog ears on the hour glass quilt block. You may have to square these blocks back up. Mine was a little off being 4 1/2″ so I had to cut a little off the hour glass quilt block.
