Creating Your Own Foundation Pieced Placemat

Cutting the foundation paper pieced paper
Then you will carefully cut out each of the foundation paper pieced placemat pattern sections along the outside line. This outside line represents your seam allowance, which gives you extra fabric around each piece for joining the sections together neatly. Take your time with this step, as accurate cutting helps your placemat fit perfectly when all the units are sewn together.
How to Assemble Each Section
I will show the example using Section D Step D unit for foundation pieced placemat so you can clearly see each step of the foundation paper piecing process. The video down below demonstrates the coaster version of this design, but the principles and techniques are exactly the same for this foundation pieced placemat.
The only difference is that the foundation pieced placemat is larger in size and includes a few additional sections to create the full layout. If you follow along with the video and these instructions together, you’ll easily understand how to assemble each piece for a beautifully finished project.
Fold the paper in half between D1 and D2
Choosing and Positioning Fabrics for Your Foundation Pieced Placemat
Get two pieces of fabric one pink and one blue. If you’re new to foundation paper piecing, I highly recommend starting with solid fabrics instead of busy prints. Solids make it easier to see your stitching lines and understand how each section fits together, helping you build confidence before trying patterned fabrics.
Place the pink fabric right sides together with the blue fabric, positioning the pink fabric next to the paper. Remember, the fabrics should sit on the back side of the paper while you sew along the printed lines on the front side. This setup ensures your seams are accurate and your foundation pieced placemat comes together cleanly.
The fabrics need to be overhanging the D1 and D2 line by quarter of an inch
Sew down the line of D1 and D2 cutting away loose threads as we go
Trim up the over hang so its quarter of an inch
Sewing and Pressing Steps for Your Foundation Pieced Placemat
Flip back the blue fabric, finger press or use a seam roller
Now we will work on the next line folding back D2 and D3
Trim the blue fabric to a quarter of an inch from the folded paper
Take a piece of pink fabric and place face down on top of the blue. Turn around and sew along the line between D2 and D3
Open up the pink fabric and finger press
Now we will work on the next line folding back D3 and D4
Trim the Pink fabric to a quarter of an inch from the folded paper
Take a piece of yellow fabric and place face down on top of the pink. Turn around and sew along the line between D3 and D4
Open up the white fabric and finger press
Now we will work on the next line folding back D4 and D7
Trim the white fabric to a quarter of an inch from the folded paper, this is the bottom corner
Take a piece of blue fabric and place face down on top of the white. Turn around and sew along the line between D4 and D7
Open up the white fabric and finger press
If there is too much fabric overhang you can trim it off next to the seam allowance
Now working at the other end fold back D1 and D5
Trim the pink fabric to a quarter of an inch from the folded paper, this is the bottom corner
Take a piece of yellow fabric and place face down on top of the pink. Turn around and sew along the line between D1 and D5
Open up the white fabric and finger press
Now working at the other end fold back D5 and D6
Trim the white fabric to a quarter of an inch from the folded paper, this is the bottom corner again
Take a piece of blue fabric and place face down on top of the white. Turn around and sew along the line between D5 and D6
One foundation pieced unit is complete, you can now go around this section and cut away the excess fabric
Now complete all the other units, don’t forget there is a you tube tutorial below if you need to see every unit being created from start to finish.
First we are going to be working with Sections D E and F
Remove the paper, and sew the ends of F and E to the central unit of D sewing at a quarter of an inch
Stitch the B unit to the top of D, F and E
Stitch the A unit to the bottom of D, F and E
Then sew C to the very bottom
Once the main bunny block is complete sew the 8 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ sections to the top and bottom
The two side panels are 3″ x 12″ sew them on
Use a decorative stitch to attach all the layers
add you binding and now you have a cute little placemat
