Learn How to Sew Decorative Shell Tucks on your Sewing Machine
Every Wednesday, I share simple sewing tips, tricks, and tutorials to help you get more confident with your sewing machine. If you own a Baby Lock Soprano or Lyric, or if youโve only ever used a straight stitch, this tutorial is going to open up a whole new creative option for you.
Letโs dive into how to create shell tucks, what fabrics work best, and the exact machine settings youโll need to get this elegant stitched edge.

๐งต What Are Shell Tucks?
Shell tucks are a decorative stitch technique that creates a delicate scalloped or โshellโ edge on your fabric. This pretty detail is often used on:
- Blouses and dresses
- Napkins or table linens
- Pillow edges or trims
They add a soft, vintage-inspired touch to your sewing projects and are perfect for lightweight fabrics that need a bit of flair.
โ ๏ธ Fabric Tips for Shell Tucks
Before starting, itโs important to understand where they will and wonโt work.
- Avoid the selvage: They do not work on the selvage edge (the part with printed dots or manufacturer details).
- Cut on the bias: This technique works beautifully on fabric cut at a 45-degree angle, also known as the bias. The bias allows the fabric to stretch slightly, giving the shells their curved shape.
- Use thin fabric: Choose lightweight materials such as broadcloth or blouse fabric. They wonโt form properly on thick fabrics like quilting cotton or denim.

๐งท Setting Up Your Sewing Machine for Shell Tucks
Iโm using the Baby Lock Soprano, but these settings will work on most machines that have a shell tuck stitch option.
- Select the Stitch
- Go to your utility stitches menu.
- Choose stitch number 39
- Attach the Correct Presser Foot
- The display will show which foot to use.
- For this stitch, itโs Foot J.
- Adjust Your Tension
- Set your machine tension to 9.
- This helps the stitch pull the edge of the fabric just enough to create that tucked scallop effect.
โ๏ธ Aligning the Fabric for Perfect Shell Tucks
Hereโs the secret to getting professional-looking shell tucks every time:
- Fold your fabric on the bias, right sides together.
- Position the edge so that the needle just catches the very edge of the fold.
- The goal is for the needle to drop slightly off the edge of the fabric on every few stitches this is what โtucksโ the edge in and forms that scalloped pattern.
Go slowly and keep your fabric aligned evenly for consistent, smooth shells.

๐ธ Finishing Touches: Pressing Your Shell Tucks
Once youโve sewn your line of shell tucks, take your piece to the ironing board.
- Press the tucks flat and crisp using a low to medium heat setting.
- This really makes the scalloped edges pop and gives your project a clean, professional finish.
You can use matching thread for a subtle look or metallic or holographic thread for a decorative edge that really stands out.

๐ก Creative Ideas for Using Shell Tucks
Once you master this decorative technique, you can add shell tucks to all sorts of projects:
- Blouses and sleeves for a vintage touch
- Napkin edges for a fancy dinner set
- Table runners or placemats
- Baby clothing for soft, delicate trim
Experiment with different thread colors or even layer multiple lines to create a textured, elegant finish.
๐ฌ Final Thoughts on Sewing Shell Tucks
Shell tucks are a simple but stunning stitch that can instantly elevate your sewing projects. Theyโre easy to do once you understand the setup and look amazing on light fabrics.
