Easy & Fun DIY Tutorial: How to Sew a Glasses Case (No Notions Needed!)

How to Sew a Glasses Case : Simple Tutorial for Beginners
If you’ve been looking for an easy sewing project, you’re going to love this one! In this step-by-step guide, I’ll show you how to sew a glasses case using just fabric and batting no zippers, buttons, or snaps needed. It’s quick, fun, and the perfect scrap-busting project for beginners.
Let’s get started!

What You’ll Need to Sew a Glasses Case
To sew a glasses case, you only need a few simple materials:
- Exterior fabric: 19 inches tall by 4½ inches wide
- Lining fabric: 19 inches tall by 4½ inches wide
- Batting: 19 inches tall by 4½ inches wide (use quilter’s batting)
- Strap piece: 3 inches tall by 5 inches wide
Tip: Choose multi-directional fabrics such as dots, small prints, or solids. Avoid one-way patterns since the flap folds down, one-way prints may appear upside down once sewn.
Step 1: Prep the Strap
To start sewing your glasses case, take your strap piece and place it right side down.
- Fold it in half lengthwise (so it measures 1½ inches wide) and press with your iron.
- Open it back up and fold each long edge into the center crease. Press again.
- Fold in half once more to hide all raw edges and press firmly.
Now your strap is neat, folded, and ready to stitch. Use Wonder Clips to hold it together before sewing.
Step 2: Stitch the Strap
Take your prepared strap to the sewing machine. Sew close to both long edges to secure the folds.
Settings I used:
- Machine: Baby Lock Altair
- Thread: Polyester Gutermann (top and bobbin)
- Needle: 90/14 sewing machine needle
Remember to backstitch at the start and end for strength. Once both sides are stitched, set the strap aside.

Step 3: Prepare the Main Body
Now we’ll start assembling the main part of your glasses case.
- Lay your exterior and lining fabrics right sides together.
- Place the batting on the bottom (underneath both layers).
- Clip the layers together using Wonder Clips.
Next, we’ll create a small flap design at the top of your case.
Step 4: Mark the Flap
Fold the fabric stack in half to find the center. Use a friction pen or chalk pencil to mark it.
- From the center point, measure ¾ inch outward on both sides.
- Then, mark down 2 inches from the top edge on each side.
- Connect the outer marks to create two angled flap lines.
Use a ruler to draw the lines cleanly. These marks show where you’ll sew to shape the flap.
Step 5: Attach the Strap
Flip your fabric so the exterior side faces up. Measure 3½ inches down from the top and mark a line.
Position your strap so it slightly overlaps this line. Clip it in place don’t worry if it overhangs a little; that’s intentional.
Now re-layer everything (lining, exterior, and batting) with the strap sandwiched inside. Clip the edges again to secure it all.
Step 6: Sew Around the Edges
Mark a 3½-inch opening on one side of your fabric this will be used to turn your project right side out later.
Starting at one mark, sew all the way around the edge using a ¼-inch seam allowance, stopping at the second mark.
Pro Tip: Use the small notch on your sewing foot to align your fabric perfectly ¼ inch from the needle.
Step 7: Trim and Clip
Once sewn, trim away any excess batting and snip the corners diagonally to reduce bulk. Be careful not to cut into your stitches!
Trim off any extra length from the strap ends as well.
Step 8: Turn Right Side Out
Now, carefully turn your project right side out through the opening.
Use a chopstick or point turner to push out the corners neatly. Then, press everything flat with your iron—especially the opening you used for turning.
Step 9: Topstitch the Edges
With the opening pressed flat, topstitch all the way around the glasses case. This will close the opening and give your project a neat, finished edge.

Step 10: Fold & Finish Your Glasses Case
Lay your fabric with the outer side facing up. Fold the bottom edge upward until the total height measures 6¾ inches. Press to hold the fold.
Sew along the sides again, following your previous stitch lines. This forms the pocket for your glasses.
Give the case one last press, and you’re done! Slide your glasses inside, fold the flap down, and enjoy your new handmade glasses case.
