🧵 What You’ll Need for Sewing a Velcro Pouch
Before we start, gather the following materials to make your Velcro pouch:
- Two pieces of fabric one exterior one lining, each measuring 9½ inches tall by 5 inches wide
- A piece of quilting batting 9½ inches tall by 5 inches wide
- Velcro strip (hook and loop) – about 2¼ inches long and 1 inch wide
- Sewing machine
- Thread to match your fabric
- Pins or clips
- Iron
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Optional: Chopstick or point turner for corners
This project only takes about 30 minutes, making it a great choice for beginners learning how to handle Velcro and small sewing projects.

🪡 Step 1: Choosing the Right Fabric
When Sewing a Velcro Pouch, fabric selection matters more than you might think. The type of fabric you choose can make a big difference in how professional and polished your finished pouch looks.
If your fabric has an obvious direction (like stripes or animals all facing one way), it may end up upside down once folded a common mistake when Sewing a Velcro Pouch for the first time. To avoid that, it’s best to use:
- Multi-directional prints, where the design goes in many directions, or
- Solid colors that don’t have a top or bottom
This way, your finished pouch will look perfect from every side, no matter how it’s folded.

🧶 Step 2: Quilting the Fabric
Take your top fabric piece and place it right side up on top of your quilting batting.
Now, it’s time to add some simple quilting lines. Set up your sewing machine (like a Baby Lock Soprano) with a 90/14 needle and longer stitch length for smooth stitching.
Sew straight lines across the fabric you can make squares, diagonals, or simple vertical lines. This quilting adds structure and a professional finish to your pouch.
💡 Beginner Tip: Don’t stress about perfect spacing. Slightly uneven lines add charm and texture to your project.

🔗 Step 3: Attaching the Velcro
Next, we’ll attach the Velcro to the pouch. This step is easier than it looks!
- Lay your quilted piece flat.
- Measure about 2 inches from the top edge and place one Velcro strip (the hook side) in the center of your fabric.
- Pin it in place (avoid sewing over pins).
Now, stitch around all four sides of the Velcro, pivoting at the corners. If your machine has a pivot feature, turn it on it’ll lift the presser foot automatically to help with corners.
To make the Velcro extra secure, sew a small “X” (or diagonal cross) through the middle. This prevents it from coming loose with repeated use.
⚠️ Avoid using sticky-backed Velcro it can damage your needle and gum up your sewing machine.

🪡 Step 4: Sewing the Back Velcro Strip
Take the other piece of fabric and repeat the process, placing the loop side of the Velcro about ¾ inch from the top edge.
Sew it on the same way around all sides, with a diagonal cross in the middle for durability.
Now both pieces are ready to come together!

✂️ Step 5: Sewing the Pouch Together
Place your two fabric pieces right sides together make sure the Velcro pieces are on opposite ends.
Start sewing about ¼ inch from the edge, all the way around, but leave a small gap (around 2 inches) at the bottom for turning your pouch right-side out.
Backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the seams.
Once done, trim the corners slightly to reduce bulk but be careful not to cut through your stitches!
🌬️ Step 6: Turning & Pressing the Pouch
Turn your pouch right side out through the gap.
If the corners don’t poke out cleanly, use a chopstick or point turner to help shape them. Then press the entire pouch with your iron, folding in the opening edges neatly.
Now topstitch around the entire edge of your pouch. This not only closes the opening but also adds a beautiful, crisp finish.

🧷 Step 7: Folding and Final Stitching
Fold up the bottom section of your pouch it should measure about 3 inches high once folded. The top flap with Velcro will fold down over it.
Check the alignment to make sure the Velcro pieces meet perfectly when closed.
Once happy with the placement, stitch down both sides of the pouch using the edge of your previous topstitch line as a guide.
For extra strength, do a few backstitches at the top corners, where the pouch will open and close the most.
